My favorite thing in non-fiction articles is when they pose some interesting question the article will answer, and then they start telling us about the childhood of the main person involved in the question. It's my favorite because I get to close the article and never think about it again.

I still for the life of me cannot figure out[*] why all the AI proponents are hell bent on convincing everyone else to use AI. You'd think these good capitalists would be happy to have an advantage. * This is hyperbole. I have some ideas.

JK Rowling’s transphobia has ruined Harry Potter. That is a shame, there was a real magic in the fantasy of it. As a kid, I always loved imagining going to private coed boarding school. Inheriting a big pile of money. Drinking non alcoholic beer. Owning a little slave guy

Haven't seen it, but it seems like some people are coming away from "You Can See Everything" with actual doubt about Holmes' guilt ("maybe she's just dumb"), seemingly because the film wants to be ambiguous about manipulation & deception. That sucks! Watch "The Imposter" (2012) documentary instead.

(That is, watch The Imposter if you want a mind-bending audience-involved-in-manipulation experience from a documentary, without supporting something that some people are apparently getting all the wrong ideas from.)

right now there's no guarantee AI usage becomes embedded in indie games. We're a scene. We don't HAVE to be this. Individual choices couldn't matter more in this moment. To see that you can make a small, positive impact at mild inconvenience to yourself and say "nah" is to give up on a better world.

This shit is so cool. They took away being able to afford computers for this shit.

Business Insider confirms it: Amazon has warehouses of GPUs that can’t be installed, and is buying them so far in advance that a supply chain team said they “didn’t have a clear forecasted path” to installing them. www.businessinsider.com/amazon-220-b...

The last pre-AI version is still in the stb repository in the "deprecated/" subdirectory. stb_sprintf.h has also been moved into its own repository. for the same reasons. Both stb_sprintf and stb_image_resize2.h are written and maintained by Jeff Roberts, who has a different AI policy than myself.

It is in its own repository for two reasons: 1. unlike most stb libraries which are "quick and dirty", it is intended to be a "real" library, e.g best in class, so it makes sense to treat it differently 2. AI was used in its development, but I want the stb repository to be no-AI no exceptions

Haven't spoken publically about Order of the Sinking Star in a year. Thought it didn't really matter since I don't expect it to turn a profit on $27M cost, but I just checked my contract for the first time in 10 years & realized I receive limited GROSS profits. So I need to decide where those go:

Alan Hazelden@alanhazelden.bsky.social

I intend to use my profits from the game to fund and uplift marginalised and underrepresented creators. I’ve already begun that effort with the Draknek New Voices Puzzle Grant: grants.draknek.org (which is currently open for applications).

"I intend to direct my profits from OotSS towards marginalized and underrepresented developers. But 'direct' not 'fund'. E.g. possibly to pay contractors for art and music for *my* games (e.g. possibly free indie games that I normally wouldn't spend money on contractors at all)."

To date I have shipped ONE paid-for asset in all my indie games, this custom dragon sprite made by Christopher "oryx" Barrett used as the punchline / endgame-wow-you-moment for Promesst 2. So doing this at all is a pretty big change!

Since I'm unemployed, not an owner of a successful or stable indie game company, I was a little hesitant to just promise to give it all away, so here's the compromise I'm considering (but am open to persuasion that this isn't the right call):

🚨 BREAKING: Elon Musk personally proposed slowing down Ukraine’s Starlink access, and Trump agreed, The Telegraph reports, citing four sources. Musk reportedly later feared backlash from European customers and publicly denied responsibility, blaming the White House instead.

My favorite graphics in "Transportation and the Shape of Cities" #4: A typical office worker has less space in their cubicle than their car does in the parking garage.

How long have I been using Windows 7, and I only just discovered that you can drag the "task buttons" for open windows on the task bar around to reorder them? I mean, no great loss that I didn't know previously, as it's not something I need or want to do particularly, but wild to discover so late.

The current Ukraine discussion keeps reminding me of a passage in a Steven Brust novel (Dragon, most likely) in which a Dragaeran warlord explains that the side that resists invasion is the one starting the war, because, you know, they could just not resist and give the invader whatever they want.

I've become a single-issue voter, where that issue is "we must destroy all the crap Trump created so future U.S. Presidents know this won't work".

TIL that I've been incorrectly imagining what people mean by IMAX. Not only the consumer branding confusion from marketing some lower-res digital projection theaters as IMAX, but also the experience I remember from my teen years with a Cloris Leachman movie was Omnimax / IMAX Dome, not normal IMAX.

(I was trying to remember the actress name, and it took maybe 5-15 seconds to get there, which felt like forever. *How* I correctly pulled "Cloris Leachman" without having thought about it for 40 years ago given my shitty memory I have no idea.)

@vfig.bsky.social I was very curious to see how that guy got permission from BOTH Watterson AND the Herbert estate, and the answer seems to be he didn't. Multiple tweets from multiple people crowing about permission, ignoring that he apparently only got half of the permission necessary.

at the bottom of every problem you think an "agent" is going to solve for you there has to be a real person somewhere doing real work. agents can't fly a plane, can't rig lights on a stage, can't cook a meal.
