And it's doubly annoying because these people don't have an issue with pistol grips ! They put them on those shitass hand crossbows all the time ! The absolute gall of some people using their ignorance as a basis of what feels right or wrong, it kills me.

Medieval firearms I would say have one defining characteristic that makes them both distinct and feel less intrusive in a fantasy setting, it's that they lack a proper buttstock or pistol grip. That shows quite late all things considered.

It would be like considering whether your Roman analogs should have indoor plumbing, and picturing a brushed steel sink with a tap and dismissing the idea out of hand as ludicrous, instead of yknow fountains and the cloaca maxima.

You know the problem is that when these people ponder the idea of it, they're picturing flintlock muskets too. They have no idea what early firearms look like, so they fit in stuff two hundred years too advanced and figure that it would clash. Like yeah no kidding.

But once you're introducing the idea that medieval fantasy is firmly rooted in medieval European history and THAT's why guns would feel out of place ? No, you're completely off-base here. Guns KEEP showing up in the Hundred Years War, it was well part of the military landscape by 1400.

You can 100% justify not putting firearms in a fantasy setting by just going "well I don't want to buck the trend". It's kinda chickenshit but there's more than a few reason why a working artist would have to go that way.

It is patently delusional for 'fantasy authors' to claim that firearms would look like an intrusion in their setting because it is 'firmly rooted in the past' when they clearly don't know anything about the time period they're pulling from.
