Left of the Dial

never the wrong time for this classic

New Protomartyr and Gilla Band releases on the same day? Ambassador, with these albums, you are spoiling us!

On the 100th Anniversary of his birth, one of my all-time favourites. A standout even amongst the classics.

Three amazing things about this 16th century letter: 1. It is written in code. 2. It complains about pirates. 3. It is written by King Henry VIII!

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)

One of the first "outrageous" claims I saw as Jason Arday's media hounding unfolded was that he ran 30 marathons in 35 days! Wow! What a thing to claim! And the newspapers all suggested there was no evidence he actually did it. Well, they clearly didn't look very hard 🙄 🧵 1/26

⭐ BOOK ⭐ The Tiny Angry Witch has got a book of magic - but when you’re tiny, turning the pages can be tricky… This is our longest video so far. Stop-motion animation, made with models, props, and patience! Written, built, animated, voiced, and scored by 4 x people (and 1 x Witch)

So, we found a live bat in our galleries. 🦇 a thread🦇

A very powerfully worded statement on why not just this specific proposal, but any such proposal is incompatible with the good of football.

I’ve been standing stock still in this wood for about 10 minutes while I mess about with a photo on my phone. I look up, notice the shape, and slowly crouch down to film This has made me so happy I feel I could cry. It’s as close to magic as I hope to get.

Every Warhammer fan will have their own story of how John Blanche transformed their game & informed their lives. The man was a giant whose shadow has cloaked the entire hobby, not in grim darkness, but in vibrant, idiosyncratic colour. Rest in peace, Mr Blanche.

Hugely sad. We've lost John Blanche. It's hard to know where to begin. He set fire to a generation's imagination, and those fires show no sign of stopping burning. His work very much illuminated the darkness.

RIP to John Blanche, the best to ever do it. Before Warhammer was even Warhammer he understood what it was: weird, gross, unsettling, maximalist.

And not just having a go at it, I think we pretty solidly un-debunked it. A rare case of an internet quote that seems too entertaining to be real, but it is. And thanks to modern wonders, you don't have to be a Viennese archivist to be able to look at the original letter in Freud's own hand.

Happy birthday, Dad. Wish you were here. You’d know what to do. Or at least you’d know what to write. ❤️

'A simple (perfect) life' - my spring landscape is finally finished! An apple orchard in bloom, old railway, sheep with their lambs and an allotment being prepared for growing :) Zoom in to see all the other tiny details too... I think this might be my favourite aerial embroidery I've ever done!

I was just talking to a friend today about Dolly Parton's Imagination Library - new books every month, totally for free, for kids ages 1-5. My son was part of the program - this is a copy of the letter that came with his last book, right after his 5th birthday.

Open up this picture fully. Then look at the surface of Mars. Then look up to the top right. Spot Mars' moon Phobos high in the sky. Then notice the bright spot beside Phobos. That's Earth.

It's that time of year again and my top artists are: 1. High on Fire 2. @shura.gg 3. @deathvalleygirls.bsky.social 4. @thisisdeepseadiver.bsky.social 5. @cmatbaby.bsky.social I've had the privilege of seeing 3 of them live this year. Very different gigs, but all were amazing.

Oil is the most Lovecraftian thing that actually exists. You're telling me that there's a black ichor under the earth made from the ancient dead, whose burning can realize all the dreams of man, but only at the price of slowly returning the earth to its primordial state?
