We need to see from successful writers of novels saythis. Magazines don't care about your accolades, meaning magazines don't care that you haven't published yet. Short fiction is hard and it is NOT a classroom for novel-writing. It is its own discipline. Become great at short fiction.

i now have 4 novels out, usa today bestsellers with multiple award nominations, and you guys, i also have like 10 short story rejections from uncanny magazine 😓 but i've got SO many stories brewing! i swear next year is The Year, i'm coming for you @uncannymagazine.bsky.social !!!

The misguided need to identify with the protagonist missed half the point of reading. We know this because marginalized people read in spite of our underrepresentation and/or misrepresentation in all forms of media. Not because we're Virtue signaling, because there's extractable value in

books can be about bad people. the characters are not your friends. the protagonist is not you.

Eugenia has already said here everything I was going to say about this. One thing I will add is that the lasting thing I gained following this project was a deep hatred for AI slop and LLMs as anyone who has heard me speak on ths subject since knows. I saw how the sausage was made and rejected it.

FYI that this year's Gen Con Writers Symposium has been the best and most diverse conference in years, with writers and readers packing panels and workshops. Props to @mauricebroaddus.bsky.social and the GCWS staff for doing such amazing work! 3/

We survived GenCon Writers Symposium 2026, y’all (and that’s saying something considering the occasional tornado). I was so busy running around I barely got to enjoy it. Luckily, my interns and friends made sure to slow me down to experience what we were curating.

This year's GenCon Writers Symposium was amazing! Check out this thread from @mauricebroaddus.bsky.social to learn why the convention is a must-attend for writers. Maurice and his staff have truly transformed the Symposium in the last two years. I can't wait to see what they do next time!
