New paper out today with Zhian Chen. We argue that modern intensive parenting is not only exhausting for parents, but in some cases disrupts healthy child development. What is 'overparenting'? And can evolutionary theory help us understand how we got here? academic.oup.com/emph/advance...

Are you a forensic anthropologist or other biological anthropologist who considers skeletal trauma interpretation part of your skill set? We are running a study (survey, ~15 min) on how practitioners interpret skeletal trauma. It's kinda fun to do! Sharing this with others is much appreciated 🤩

Thanks to everybody who chimed in! I arrived at the conclusion that (1) there's a lot of interesting stuff about interactions and (2) the figure I was looking for does not exist. So, I made it myself! Here's a simple illustration of how to control for confounding in interactions:>

Julia M. Rohrer@dingdingpeng.the100.ci

Does anybody have a good visualization to explain how interactions can be confounded, and why interactions require interaction controls? @urisohn.bsky.social maybe? (Asking because I have an idea, but want to check out what exists already before investing the effort)

Perhaps the core of the document is the redefining on NSF's Broader Impacts criterion. Here's a key excerpt. ("do not effectuate NSF priorities" is a masterful use of the exoneration tense)

Research led by @brunelcce.bsky.social’s @abbeyepage.bsky.social suggests the demography of grandmothering needs more attention. Cultural variation in grandmaternal care may be due to fertility & mortality patterns, eg the Agta where few kids get grandma care (tho grandmas give care when available)

Great ideas can come from anywhere, and congressional legislation (e.g., CHIPS and Science Act) has directed the NSF toward the goal of broadening participation in science. Researchers can organize and approach the legal counsel at their universities for clarifications on their activities. (14)

Authenticating into Manuscript Central with Clavirate is a step BACKWARDS in convenience/efficiency. It stalls out during login 100% of the time, so we're back to journal-specific logins - and having to figure out which no longer accessible old institutional email is linked to which journal.

Need To Know Basis is launched ! The team is now working on data collection in the Farafenni region of The Gambia. Thank you to the team for all their work in the field and for their sensitivity asking men and women about information sharing and FGC!
