Turns out I am on track to have my best year ever of wages on United Scenic Artists covered projects, with $20,900 of qualified earnings. This falls $4,100 short of the amount required for a vesting year in the union pension.

(Because of when earnings are reported, some of that total is for shows that open next year, some is for a show entirely from last year, and a few shows I did this year were reported last year.)

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

There’s no discussion of potential penalties in this article, but if people don’t go to jail for flagrant illegality like this, it will keep happening. For companies like Google, fines are just another cost of doing business. Something to toss on the balance sheet and weigh against profits.

Likewise, AirBnB is: 1) A platform to help people make some cash by leveraging temporarily empty housing stock, and offer guests an opportunity to experience neighborhoods or areas in ways that hotels don't. (good!)

2) A platform that is a blight upon our cities and neighborhoods as residential units are used for unlicensed hotel inventory instead of places for people to actually live. (bad!)

Attempting to accommodate multiple kinds of hosts, e.g, people who are legitimately renting out their home (or part of) during times it's otherwise unoccupied, and people who have a portfolio of properties they are running as unlicensed hotels, is bound to have imperfect solutions.

Multiple things can be true. 1) Some hosts have unreasonable expectations of guests in an attempt to extract more money from the system! 2) Some guests are inconsiderate jerks!

It's reasonable that some unusual properties might have special requirements. In the end, the terms of the stay should be totally upfront, and if you don't like them, don't stay there.

I stay in temporary housing a lot for work (hotels, airbnbs, company housing), and I always try to leave things pretty tidy for the cleaners. Why should I make their jobs harder? They also aren't getting paid enough!

You are under no obligation to arrange your commercial affairs to the financial benefit of manufacturers, and anyone who claims to be surprised that someone they sold a device to used it to benefit themselves at the manufacturer's expenses is either disingenuous...or unserious.

Here's the same scene in the Hamlet now running at Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. I guess I keep coming back to the idea of Laertes storming back in a late afternoon golden hour.

Until I stumbled across production photos, I had totally forgotten that the last time I designed Hamlet, at Cincinnati Shakespeare in 2014, Travis McElroy played Laertes. Here's a photo from that intimate shoebox of a space on Race Street.

The movie La La Land makes it seem like playing in an LA area coverband is soul killing, but I have to say that the dad coded dudes in the 80-90s cover band playing the Calabasas Pumpkin Festival seem like they're having a great time.

There was a lady at EWR security wearing a sweater that said "My dog is cuter than yours" and the restraint I showed in not immediately challenging her with this picture... (I'm sure her dog is also very cute.)

A few more photos of Hamlet at Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. Directed by Brian B Crowe, set by Brian Ruggaber, costumes by Yao Chen, sound by Drew Sensue-Weinstein. Lights by me. Opens Friday.

One of the joys of sitting in previews for productions of Shakespeare is watching audiences discover the story for the first time. Last night at Hamlet, when Gertrude took the cup, an audience member in balcony reached out toward the stage and exclaimed, "No!"

Have you noticed, lately, or noticed people around you commenting, that there just seems to be no money anymore.
