Have you noticed, lately, or noticed people around you commenting, that there just seems to be no money anymore. There's no money for companies to make the tv shows you like, the video games you like, the local diner you like shut down, no one you know can find a job. Think about that in context of

AI is now the biggest investment in all of US history as a percentage of GDP. Datacenter construction is up, all other construction is down. "AI Is Squeezing Out the Rest of the Stock Market," reported WSJ 2 days ago. We basically bet the whole economy on the most optimistic visions panning out.

One thing I think about a lot is that even though this money is going to AI companies and data center construction, where is THAT money going? It doesn't seem to be invested anywhere else. So either they are hoarding it dramatically or it is getting siphoned out of the country.

There was a conversation the other day about how the Centrist NYT/WaPo axis has started doing "people should get into the trades! the trades are growing!" as the new "writers should learn to code!". But then someone dropped in a graph showing the majority of new work in "trades" is in datacenters

…and non-datacenter work in the trades is shrinking. Which implies that a bunch of people are going to rush to be educated as, idk, electricians, for the promise that's the stable job path now, then those jobs will crash (the same way "coding" jobs crashed) when the data center buildout is finished.

No money for healthcare, no money for schools, no money for research, no money for regulation, no money for infrastructure, no money for aid to other countries. Somehow there is money for bunkers and ballrooms?

Money represents corpses The corpses are stacked up into yachts, bunkers, mansions It's why nobody else has anything to eat All the Illionaires are afraid they'll starve because their bodies are craving LOVE so intensely. Love for reality they'll reject to the end of the world idiots 💲 >💚 = 🔥🌎

The dang thing is a cancer. Anyone saying we need to live with it because 'that's just life now, get with the program' is advocating on behalf of the tumor. We *cannot* keep living this way.

Oh I've noticed, as has everyone I talked to on a regular basis. It is even affecting employment here in the states. The fallout of the bubble burst is going to be UGLY!

Well at least if the civil unrest and societal collapse when the AI bubble collapses by 2027, the nuclear war doesn't get us by 2028, or the new plague virus will get us by 2032, or climate change will get us by 2050, or...

Knowing Russia they are dumb enough to be developing an antibiotic-resistant novel Plague bacteria in a BSL3 lab tho (the "broken glass vial" excuse is bs btw and if the FSB is lying about that while quarantining people with only 1 case so far... things arent good, chief, and im tired of this life).

Before the AI bubble started to inflate, I was already worried about the percentage of total investment tech took up in the US. Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Google, and Netflix take up a loooootta money and space

For sure, I was just saying that even before that started happening, I was worried that we were putting too many of our economic eggs into the big tech baskets. You gotta diversify your bonds

That's what happens when people who have no clue what they're doing in reality but are put in charge of important societal jobs anyhow, unfortunately. 😞

thats wrong. they didnt bet it on the most optimistic visions panning out. They bet it on a ponzi scheme, each hoping not to be the last in and last out. They know its a bubble, they just all hope to be the ones to cash out with a bundle leaving everyone else broke.

Just to be clear, there is NO SIGNS this investment is ever going to pan out. This is going to be the most predictable economic collapse in human history while potentially being the most devastating with the leaders we have.

If there’s a society left afterwards to make meaningful retrospectives, I am already seething at the thought of the Netflix documentary where the architects of this economic disaster - themselves insulated from the consequences - will opine on “EVERYONE loved AI! NOBODY saw this collapse coming!”

In other words, once that money is spent, it stays spent. It doesn't turn into something useful later like investing in, I dunno, railroad lines would. They're just putting resources in a rocket and shooting them off into space

Oh, I'm not sure you'll still think that once you see what they're planning to do with the rockets over the next two years

At least we can recycle the raw materials. Musk’s dipshit plan for orbital data centers (lmao) involves atomizing the decommissioned wreckage over the ocean.

I just keep thining about, the zillions of dollars in fake money that are being generated in SpaceX & Anthropic stock. How much of that is being converted to real money, used to buy durable things, by the people running those companies. If Oracle collapsed tomorrow Ellison would still own Paramount.

There's plenty of money. We can create as little or as much of it as we want, at the touch of a button. But our systems for creating, circulating and distributing money (systems 💯 created and controlled by us naked monkeys) are so utterly fucking fucked that one guy can hoard all of it.

We've collectively allowed a few evil shitbags to design our shared economy and financial system for their own benefit, and now they're using that system to suck all the money out of circulation into their own pockets where it's congealing into clots that'll give the global economy a terminal stroke

Businesses have learned in the last few decades is that you don’t have to actually make money. You just have to make your business bigger and more valuable to be rich. Amazon became as big as it is because they weren’t price gouging they were lowering prices to get a bigger share of the market

it’s so cool because ai shit is constantly hemorrhaging money so we’re dumping billions into shit that will not make those billions back i’m sure this will be great for the economy

I think AI investment crowding out other investment could only explain 1 or maybe 2 things on that list. Isn't it mostly a function of higher rates to borrow?

There’s only so much liquidity - people have to sell other financial instruments (such as bonds) and/or take out loans to invest in AI, both of which push interest rates up

But AI lending is crowding out the borrowable money - all the banks and private credit are limited in their ability to get approval to lend for anything besides AI data centre dreams

I don't think there's a benefit in specifically demonstrating "squeezing out" occurring; the investment, and the data center buildout, shows the money exists. If society wanted, the money could be spent on other things. "But capitalism wouldn't pick good things!" will not assuage the anticapitalists

Right, there is only so much money circulating through the system, it’s a zero sum game by definition. Spending money on AI means you can’t spend it elsewhere, AND you have to take out loans or sell other assets to get more money to spend on AI, the investment is leveraged to the tune of almost $4T

Worked at a restaurant that shifted every system they had for things with AI built in. the scheduling system didn't work right. we were forced to make it work to look good for investors. Any IT help was done through Bots. Wages froze. Facial recognition to clock in/out. Kiosks confused guests.

Quality of food and service tanked because of cuts, But we could open new locations every two weeks with inadequate staff numbers and training. I refused to eat at any of these new spots. We can throw parties every year for upper management, investors and general managers to get drunk for a week.

What did team members get as thanks for their hard work? My first year it was a box of a dozen cookies for the team of twenty. My second year was a thanks for the hard work, let's do better next year. This all happened in the span of four to six months.

It seems in your story like the AI isn't really even doing the work the employees used to do, the AI is more like an excuse to fire humans than it is a replacement for humans

there's no money to borrow from those who need ROI but that was never sustainable it's not like there's ever an inability to print money for productive activities it's that the borrowing has been feeding the same greedy people who now collectively decided that almost nobody is worth their time

the situation could be fixed basically overnight if only people understood enough to create municipal (aka public/state-owned) nonprofit banks that can lend (and ideally also create) money with minimal interest rates

All if those things are boring to investors because there’s no, in their mind, potential for infinite growth or at least a huge increase in valuation over the next 5-10 years. Putting aside the actual possible outcomes. Create a cap on wealth and this effect will diminish. 100% above a billion etc

People can't afford to spend because prices are jacked through the roof but wages are the same, thus there is no money to buy games, no money for movies, no money for restaurants. Sure part of it is AI but a lot of it is corporate greed and the rich hoarding the money.

I think that AI is a big part of the problem. But I think the core is private equity. I work(ed) in film and television and my experience was that PE came in and stripped everything for parts to lower costs and are trying to pump up value with future promises of AI generated content.

I think AI is less likely to be a cause and more likely to be an expression of a larger problem— financialization and the upward concentration of wealth. In the media and software industries the mass firings started *before* GenAI was in place to explain what the lost workers would be replaced with.

Exactly. It’s a shell game and both the PE and AI people think they are the ones running the scam. IDK maybe they are in it together, but I know the people who do the labor and the consumers who use the products will be left holding the bag. Along with taxpayers who will finance the bailouts.

AI sure is an effective accelerant, though, and it has the function of tying up money that otherwise might have gone somewhere productive. At least until the billionaires start firing money directly into space.

I've heard a couple times recently that grocery stores, at least in the US, are starting to notice people are buying less food because they don't have enough money.

Another grocery worker confirming the same, with a fun knock-on effect that we were way busier than normal the last 4 days, because it's the beginning of the month, when everyone's financial assistance renews, and we're selling way more ramen, pasta and canned goods than anything else.

After giving our last resource, our last tree, our last drop of water, our last trace of oil, our last inch of land, our last human life to the Great Machine, we ask it how we should save the world: "Turn me off and stop spending your children's futures on more of me."
