A simple idea has turned into a successful, monthly creative space in #kildare Woodbine books, funded by Books at One Community Prize Fund, provide a space & cuppa for a monthly meetup of creating & communing. Sept 17th is an exhibition of work. 6 - 8 pm. Oct 5th we start a new club & sketchbook

There is loads of #parenting that nobody warns you about, tonight is one of those I had no idea about before we got here: a now rare evening meal where all 3 teens are home & we sit around lingering over a glass of wine/cider & just talking. They're nice people, a bit of craic too #speirgorm

There's a very sick irony in our Justice Minister using a power imbalance to silence a rape crisis centre on the issue of consent. You couldn't ask for a better example of how rape culture is systemic #spéirgorm

Teaching children they can say no to a hug, even from someone they love, is basic bodily autonomy. It casts no suspicion on grandparents. Dreadful response from Jim O’Callaghan and Peadar Tóibín. Children build confidence by having their boundaries respected, not by being told adults know best.

The Journal@thejournal.ie

Adverts run by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre looking at consensual hugs between children and their grandparents has been suspended after criticism. Aontú's Peader Tóibín called the ad "bonkers", as he urged a "need to build resilience" among children. www.thejournal.ie/grandparents...

I’m actually pretty freaked out by the amount of people that don’t think children should have bodily autonomy. Also, should Ministers be allowed to just pull charity campaigns with no discussion or engagement. Manufactured outrage over on X that becomes an edict in an afternoon. Dodgy AF.

If you choose to silence a campaign put forth by that organisation you would want to have better reasons for it than angry online commentary. Every government representative who has come against this campaign should be asked what evidence they are bringing to the table.

My mother and sister both have careers I would describe as requiring professional-grade empathy. I consider them both experts at it. Many times, I’ve seen them educate people on the importance of respecting the bodily autonomy of children, most often via the advice: do not force them to hug.

I’ve slept on it now and when I woke up, I was still still mad about it. This morning, I’m going to ring the constituent office of my local FF TD and tell him just how mad it made me. Then I’m going to call the constituency office of my local SF TD, and ask if Matt Carthy’s support is their view.

Simon McGarr@tupped.bsky.social

No, I’m still mad about this consent business. I don’t think it is enough just to say it.

Had a really bad dream where the Minister for Justice, in the name of the government, enabled a pile-on of a rape crisis centre because of a campaign to raise awareness of consent for children.

Sorry, I've just seen the DRCC consent ad and am I to understand that people are fully losing their minds in our actual Dáil because they suggested you should ask about a hug? We had driving PSAs that traumatised us but we're too sensitive, and all of y'all are losing your mind over a HUG?!

Same. No time for his politics but he is right on this. Pity his gov don't feel the same about others tho

Jessie Buckley is now at a unique and fleeting moment in her career, like Neil Jordan was after Interview With The Vampire or Cillian Murphy was after Oppenheimer, to get a movie about a critical moment in Irish history made. What would/should/could she pick?

Was on here I read someone telling the English in-laws something like Irish people ate swan for Easter to celebrate the Easter rising & because all the swans in 1916 belonged to the English king?

Lookit. Deep down every Irish person wants to spin some yank a yarn that gets cited as fact in some factual text. We told an Irish American girl that when the Muppets was released in Ireland, Kermit the Frog was called Dermot the Frog because Cromwell’s son was a Kermit.

Hell yeah! I'm proof this works, but annoyingly it has actually been in limbo here in Ireland since the pilot ended. The successor has been a disaster already... I can only hope other countries don't make the same mistakes.

Ireland's artist basic income returned €1.39 for every €1 spent. They made it permanent. South Korea just announced plans to follow. Now Scotland too.

Was sitting beside a golf course recently with some older family members & they were waxing lyrical about how beautiful it was, they had no idea it was an ecological disaster in front of them, never occurred to them that the 'pristine green' might impact the local flora & fauna The brainwash is deep

70,000 people dead. Gaza has been razed to the ground. And, Government expects people to be able to access documents. Why are they making the visa process so impossible when colleges have their arms open to welcome these students?

Ooooh, I'm not normally a fan of cold-shoulder tops, but that black dress on Siobhán is absolutely the cat's pyjamas, the bees knees, AND the mutt's nuts! #TraitorsIRL

The €1bn spent on fossil fuel sinces April would have put 8kw battery & solar on 100,000 homes buying them energy freedom for 20+ years. The €1bn+ that will be spent over the next few months would bring that to 250,000 homes. What we lack is will and vision

If they think this bribe will work they have not met many teens - they KNOW where they are & how shit the housing, public transport, climate change, education, hse, etc etc is They won't be swayed by a single free night out once a year that they can't even get home safely & easily from 🙄

Public transport should be accessible. It should be the backbone of getting around Dublin, not something that leaves people reaching for a taxi (app) because planning and paying for a simple journey is unnecessarily difficult. #ReimagineDublin

Trans rights is inherently a bodily autonomy issue. Just like abortion rights is. We can't have gender equity or reproductive freedom without trans rights. Full stop. You can yell at me and make up shit that you claim I've said if it makes you feel better. I don't care. I'm right. And you know it.
