Reminds me of how important Repeal Shield was during the 2018 referendum. The amount of mental space that was freed up by just ignoring the anti-choicers instead of trying to argue with them. It let us focus on putting forward our own points

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

Well look, the minister is going to commission a report to go alongside of all of those other reports that confirm this and then do nothing until it is time to commission another report.

RTÉ News@news.rte.ie

Universities are to tell an Oireachtas committee that they are at capacity and teetering on a cliff-edge unless the Government addresses a funding gap in higher education.

This is deeply, deeply troubling and frankly, on top of all the other shitshows over the past few weeks, it should be a resignation issue.

No TDs should be allowed on the Internet until they can pass basic social media stress tests. I'm being 100% serious. We can't afford ministers making decisions after getting piled on on social media cause theyve rotted their brains and connection with real people by spending too much time on twittr

Most of us would rather shy away from the hard work of confronting hard truths; the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre does not have that luxury if they are to faithfully serve the people they represent.

The DRCC's campaign was informed by consent workshops and designed to reflect the real-life experiences of participants. The government's response was informed by the discomfort of those who took the messaging in bad faith.

The DRCC's campaign gently pushes us to confront hard truths. If your response to that is retaliation, you are not prepared to do the hard work of facing up to the root causes of widespread sexual violence.

Had a really bad dream where the Minister for Justice, in the name of the government, enabled a pile-on of a rape crisis centre because of a campaign to raise awareness of consent for children.

It makes me deeply uncomfortable that the Minister for Justice has used his Twitter account to create an online pile on of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre. It also appears to me a dangerous precedent that this minister, and his dept. have instructed the DRCC to remove content that he disapproved of.

That the Government would knee-jerk themselves back to treating, as policy, children as the property of older family members who would have rights over them which would stand ahead of the rights of the child is a fresh new low in a week of novel depths.

Simon McGarr@tupped.bsky.social

Consent to be touched respects the person who has the right to choose whether they want it. Nobody has a right to physical interactions with children, whether or not the intent of that interaction is physical. The alternative is an unconscionable denial of children's rights to body autonomy.

People who have experience working in charities know that being reliant on state funding has a chilling effect on how we do our jobs. The Minister for Justice intervened here to make a political point and undermined the work of those with the expertise to do the job. #spéirgorm

The Journal@thejournal.ie

Adverts run by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre looking at consensual hugs between children and their grandparents has been suspended after criticism. Aontú's Peader Tóibín called the ad "bonkers", as he urged a "need to build resilience" among children. www.thejournal.ie/grandparents...

Good to see the Minister for Justice's focus today. It's not as if the courts system is in chaos or anything.

Auntie O'Grimacey@bubblenoma.bsky.social

What kind of statement is it to make that actually the views of the government are that kids CAN be touched without their consent?

Claire McGing reposted

one of Aontú's biggest issues is a school anti-bullying policy because it says trans and nonbinary kids should be treated with respect, and they oppose comprehensive sex education designed in no small part to give kids the understanding to report inappropriate touching. it's getting weird

What's so amazing about these old Irish Halloween turnip carvings is how accurately they also represent what it feels like to live in the 21st century

He has to say something like this, I suppose, but it would be nice to acknowledge that dealing with the Passport Office or Revenue is a far smoother experience than big companies like Sky or Three Mobile.

This is such transparent horsehit. Anyone genuinely believe the Committee for Academic Freedom (sic) has "not pre-judged" this question, and may find that in fact it was reasonable for Cambridge to have hired Arday? A rant www.timeshighereducation.com/news/scholar...

This is probably the most explosive development in generations - US President siding with the invader of a European democracy. This is a real crisis and yet you wouldn't think it from media, public discourse.

1/ Donald Trump's interview with Newsmax yesterday shows very clearly that he subscribes to many false Russian-originated claims and conspiracy theories about the war in Ukraine and has a strong personal dislike of President Zelenskyy. Here's a full transcript:

Colleagues, family, friends on #strike. No blockades, not a single threat of violence. Unlike the crowd the government rushed to placate in April, and who still haven't claimed a lot of what was given. Because unlike unionised workers, lot of them are not tax compliant and don't play by the rules.

Bit of positive news to start the week: the online voter registration system voter.ie is now live nationwide (having previously worked only for Dubliners) - now anyone in the State can register or update their details on the electoral register in a couple of minutes using only their PPS number.

Could the "LLMs can't do anything" crowd and the "LLMs can do everything" crowd go somewhere private to yell at each other so the rest of us can have a normal "this new tech can do things previous tech couldn't but is limited in various ways, let's figure out best uses and regulations" conversation?

My God. We have truly crossed a Rubicon when the Irish Times of all newspapers is spreading misinformation about the Royal Houses of Europe. It wouldn't have happened back in the days when it was calling for the execution of the 1916 leaders😂

Finn McRedmond thinks "Mary Antoinette" was one of Henry VIII's wives. aren't editors supposed to catch their columnists when they betray their ignorance so severely it damages the credibility of the newspaper for continuing to publish them?
