I'll give one more: many of our graduate students don't work on projects that are narrowly related to our own research; some of our advisees (even PhD) do things quite far afield. A much firmer expectation that students develop their own project, rather than a piece of a PI's research.

Humanists (and social scientists on that side of things): What are some things that you wish your colleagues in STEM / biomedical sciences understood about us? I'll go first: The folks whose work is most important in my field are rarely the best-funded; in fact, many never get a big grant.

In some of the letters between my great-great uncle and Max Weinreich, my uncle describes how many American Jews so badly want(ed) to connect with the culture of their Yiddish-speaking parents, but had so little interest in speaking the language as adults, and none in speaking it with their kids.

Toen ik in Leiden kwam wonen was het heel uitzonderlijk als je in Katwijk vanaf het strand Scheveningen kon zien. Nu is het heel ongewoon als dat niet kan.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

The colors at sunrise were *insane* this morning. The sky, the fall colors at Promontory Point, the lake...Sheesh! Sure picked a good morning to wake up early

1/24 410 years ago #otd, a Dutch ship ran into a coast that was on no European map. Her crew climbed a cliff, flattened a pewter dinner plate, scratched a message into it, and nailed it to a post. That plate is the oldest known European object from Australia. #maritimehistory

Roman gravestone with relief from Nickenich, Germany, (circa 50 CE), the relief likely shows a Roman trader of enslaved individuals (the Latin term for which is a mango) with a cudgel, who leads two enslaved men in neck chains to be sold, LVR-Landesmuseum Bonn, Germany. A rare depiction.

OK, reposting from X is the worst ever offense here, but, well, we're talking of Jean-Pierre Olivier de Sardan, the ultimate boss of Sahel scholarship (whose son Jean-Karim is a very promising young tennis player). Totally amazing

Seeing the icthyosaur who died in childbirth and then this fossil left me feeling so small and humbled. These glimpses of the past mean more than I can put into words.

The condition of fabrics from #prehistoric pile dwelling and wetland settlements is amazing. This charred ball of thread was found at the site of Marin-Epagnier/Préfargier. It was made of hemp or lime fibres, and dates about 3900 to 3300 BC. The thread measures a total of about 10 m in length.🧵1/2

Holy smokes: “the British spelling <colour> ... was spearheaded by Ontario, where 75% of parents already used it in 1972, compared to only 23% of parents in Alberta and Saskatchewan; today, Ontario still has the highest proportion of <colour> (92%), but the rest of the country has almost caught up.”
