the moonrise tonight was one of the most spectacular ones I've ever seen. I was driving home from nashville as it rose over the smokies - a massive orange yellow orb with wispy black clouds moving over it.

just one of those my heart is bursting out of my chest sort of moments cuz it was all so beautiful.

I am not a fan of the elderly dog doomsday clock moving another minute closer to midnight.

Thankfully he stopped getting up 5x a night and now we're down to 2-3x with some new medication.

Anyway, I do feel a little bonkers these days.

now i've made a triple batch of pesto.

making large amounts of food and ensuring nothing goes to waste was a carol trait. after all, her parents were sharecroppers during the depression. nothing ever went to waste and no one was ever idle.

so I guess that's part of why my weekend has been like this, I am channeling her a little.

my family is saying goodbye to my aunt carol today in tacoma. I could not be there because dog. and it's very hard not to be.

In today’s cooking adventures I have pickled some peppers after running them through the mandolin

we always have jalapeños, serranos, cayenne, and habaneros. also, usually poblanos. we also try a new few ones every year. we've had fresno, banana, ghost, reapers, etc. this year we're trying out tabasco, which is the tiny red one in the pic.

we eat a lot of mexican, indian, and chinese food in this house. they def don't get wasted.

it's a solo weekend, teenager is at another pokemon tournament, so I've been cooking up a storm this time.

this morning I made egg bites with chorizo, manchego, red peppers, and spinach. I am not even hungry. I just don't know what to do with myself.

He really liked his carrots

the dog is having a rough time, like I didn't know if I'd have to call it at like 3am, sort of rough time. I think the cooking is maybe the only way I can distract myself. anyway, I just made a massive amount of chicken piccata meatballs.

now I'm roasting both of us some carrots. he's very excited.

opb.orgYour wasabi is probably fake. Oregon growers hope to change thatOregon is home to the largest real wasabi farm in the U.S., and chefs are using the unique ingredient in all sorts of surprising ways.

Used to go to a sushi joint down the street from my house in PDX that used real wasabi and it was incredibly delicious. We talk about it regularly still, though it's been 7 years since I last had it.

OPB@opb.org

Real wasabi is common in Japan but has long been a luxury in the U.S. It has to be served soon after preparation and doesn’t grow easily outside its native ecosystems. But a farm on the Oregon Coast may be changing that.

I have had this stupid idea for years where I cover the entirety of the first Boston record, by myself.

it's wild to realize just how deeply I have needed someone to say these things so clearly and succinctly.
