🚨Working Paper Alert🚨 "QB or Not QB? Measuring Discrimination in Football Labor Markets" TL;DR I find that there is significant discrimination when recruiting QBs from HS to college (and from college to the NFL!) based on their race.. and this costs teams wins🏆 and money💰 1/n

Samuel Alito: We won't overturn Obergefell because it's engendered reliance interests. Jan Crawford: Well, many people had organized their lives around Roe v. Wade. Alito: No, they didn't. Women merely had an "abstract" interest in "ideas about the kind of society that they were going to live in."

Just saw that Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die is available for streaming on Hulu. Do yourself a favor and watch it, so good. Sam Rockwell is a national treasure.

Just did my longest run to date, 41 days out of the NYC marathon… and to think that I still need to run 10 more miles after that, makes my head hurt 😑

New paper alert! “Heritability and social interaction in labor market outcomes: Evidence from the population of twins in the United States,” with David Card and Moises Yi, out today in PNAS. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

I didn’t even know this was a thing until I started teaching, and yes, apparently they “remember the name” (or so they told me). I just think that (a) they never go back to the file or (b) redownload it 1000 times.

ok so you know how we all get like that overwhelming horror when we consider how many people in applied quant classes do not know what a file directory is or what a filepath is or etc. my question is, how do these people ordinarily retrieve saved files. search? like they remember the filenames?

We’re in the thick of marathon training, and nothing prepares you for how little time you’ll have outside of work and running… mainly because whatever spare time you do have, it will be spent doing f***ing laundry.

Just went to the Cubs - Mets game here in NY, and saw the dumbest ump call I’ve ever seen, when PCA was supposedly tagged out. WTAF. This country is profoundly divided, but one thing everyone can agree (even Mets fans) is that the call was bullshit. And still we won🙃. #GoCubs🐻

Validated against contemporaneous responses, a survey of 916 trainees and their career intentions finds a –22 percentage point change in academia intentions and a US-departure shift concentrated among foreign-born scientists, from Azoulay, Sadun, and Scur www.nber.org/papers/w35330

I have no allegiance whatsoever to any NBA team, but tonight we’re rooting for the Knicks! The vibes are so awesome in the city. We have a great mayor. People have hope. Let’s go NYC #KnicksIn5

New NBER working paper. We meta-analyze 82 RCTs of low-cost parent programs in 20+ countries. We use data on unwritten RCTs from funder records, RCT registries, author queries, etc. to estimate a model that adjusts for publication bias and characterizes the effect distribution for unwritten studies.

wow — the preprint host, arxiv, is banning authors for a year if they submit papers with hallucinated citations 🤖

I find this unsettling: A new study in #Lancet shows that the number of faux citations in scientific articles is on the rise, and #AI is likely to blame. @aniloza.bsky.social reports. www.statnews.com/2026/05/07/l...

As someone who has been on both sides, there are clear tradeoffs, but industry might be a much better deal for most people’s preferences (though ymmv). I miss some things of academia, but I’ve learned a ton in the past year, get (almost) unlimited access to a lot of new tools, 1/2

Getting a PhD and then working outside academia is dope. My advisees who’ve done that are more or less uniformly happy and feel that they’re using the skills they trained on. (I talked to one today who just landed a great gig). Just wanted to convey that to anyone it might benefit.

and get to apply what I know to real use cases. Also, at this stage (and also at *THIS* time), I appreciate being able to choose more freely where I live, which is not a small thing. When finishing my PhD I thought academia was the “only” path. I’m glad I did it, but I’m happy I made the switch.2/2

Can large language models stand in for human participants? Many social scientists seem to think so, and are already using "silicon samples" in research. One problem: depending on the analytic decisions made, you can basically get these samples to show any effect you want. THREAD 🧵

After being 23hrs in the Caribbean, I hold the strong belief that I would be a much less stressed out individual if I’d have been born here. Absolutely causal, not questions asked. #BadBunnyWasRight

Dear Spotify, I swear I don’t like Kasabian or the Killers. I’m not lying when I down-vote them. I don’t care how close you think they are to The Kooks or The Wombats, stop putting them in my playlists. Sincerely, me.
