I am a bee and I use all six of my delicate insect limbs and fat fuzzy ass to work on video games such as WE KNOW THE DEVIL, HEAVEN WILL BE MINE, NEON WHITE and some other stuff.

MYTH: Every mixup is a 50/50 FACT: All is written. You were never meant to block that low. The very concept of a mixup is the post-hoc invention of a mind in hitstun. The trajectory of particles cannot be changed

Don't let billionaires convince you slop is the future. They're used to managing & directing, not making things themselves. Of course they can't see the difference. They don't understand your love for the craft. Keep making personal, beautiful games. You've got my support 💖

I love hearing about people reading visual novels out loud. I do believe visual novels should be performed like plays. Though I suppose there's a reason there's whole industry built around performing games live.

Anti-adverb advice is overprescribed but for some reason first year writers will do anything to write “He moved furiously through the room and shut the door contemptuously.“ Instead of: “He stomped across the room and slammed the door.”

(One sentence describes what happened in a way you can see and extrapolate the emotional timber from yourself as a reader; the other describes the feeling the writer wants you to experience but only vaguely the events that are supposed to make you feel that way)

If you’re in Seattle this Saturday, you could do worse than to come check out the mini-doc I made about @ekanaut.bsky.social

So @matthewseiji.com a terrific writer, designer, musician, wanted to to learn film making, took a course at UW and made two short films. One of them is a documentary that is debuting at Tasveer Film Festival. It's called Eka. My part was easy, he did the work tffm-2026.eventive.org/films/6a85fb...

one thing you learn from making a lot of things is that the nitty gritty details, the millions of tiny invisible decisions, ARE the art. The "higher level ideas" are not nearly as important or interesting

"AI lets you focus on the higher level ideas!!" because we all grew up dreaming of becoming managers and CEOs we all know the real artists at the very highest level are the shareholders, famously full of amazing ideas

There was a brief moment in time where blogging was a primary mode of social media, and it was delightful to see the people around you write as their way of documenting and processing the world, with writing voices you never would have otherwise had an opportunity to read. I miss that.

this is the actual answer for getting good at fighting games and it only fails when you realize it’s also the best way to learn everything else bsky.app/profile/patt...

one of the best things i've learned in fighting games is that you don't have to know why the good players do the thing first. just do the thing you see in the Xrd mikado videos from 8 years ago and you'll learn why they do it after. replay theater has the sacred texts and they're searchable.

There's a common idea that learning by imitation will stifle your natural expression, but that's never been the case for the arts; artists learn by studying and imitating other artists, reading work they like closely to understand their techniques. Those techniques are HOW you can express yourself!

Apocalypse World slanderis mostly blowback against the exhausting number of pbta content mills out there that want a free, simple, easy to use system but think AW is dungeons and dragons. AW is specifically good at nonlinear, player-driven storytelling without a hard dm-set campaign.

AW and its most successful hacks like monster hearts all understand abilities are for creating drama and player-initiated problems that players have to solve. Blades is a very extensive hack because it wants SOME of that but also wants a strong plot throughline. Not every hack understands that.

AW isn't a generic system at all, it's highly opinionated and specificly tailored for having plot driven by player mistakes. If your pbta game isn't, why are you using it? I also do sympathize with having decades of rules light RPing and wanting something crunchy and new, which is I think the issue.

i think the success of Drag'n Wash just reveals where dragons sit in the cultural consciousness, which is squarely in the middle between Car and Dog and Husband

Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1

and if anything, my point would be that the game saying "try not to come" is in fact telling you that you're *going* to come; in a way it's this perfect snapshot of the resistance-to-while-being-molded-by-a-system fantasy that games basically are, compare eg dark souls or dwarf fortress

"On opiates" I have been thinking a lot over the years about the unhealthy roles games play in people's lives, and the last week got me to finally put together this post on the kind of work I am doing (and not doing) going forward. I am here to heal and strengthen. www.patreon.com/pattheflip/p...
