I know this is not the biggest concern going these days, but it stresses me out that basically every artist/writer/critic is now expected to create their own tiny empire instead of getting paid by any existing entity to perform a job they've worked to get good at!!!!

A lot of AI criticism makes me feel like someone says “the automobile has been disastrous for society” and I’m nodding along like “yeah I actually really agree, I think that car centric urban design has-“ and then they add “also it’s a scam, cars break down after more than ten miles anyway”

I am a huge fan of all things Red Line, but we are expecting to pay $18 _per trip_ here in track capex alone over the next two decades

Yonah Freemark@yonahfreemark.com

Chicago is breaking ground on the Red Line Extension (RLE) today. RLE is a 5.5-mile extension of the existing L line to the south, with 4 new stations. The elevated/at grade line will cost $5.7 billion and is expected to eventually serve 41,500 daily trips.

They are calling this.... Four Mile Island

Trump: "I'm letting everybody that builds a plant build their own electric plant. So they're building a massive plant that's 4 miles long by 4 miles wide, and I'm letting them build electric plants. Some are nuclear, some are oil and gas, some are coal as a backup just in case."

I think about this the way that punt coverage works in football: you don't actually want everyone making a directly line to the ball, you actually want different players occupying different lanes because *the punt returner is going to move!* and you want to have broad coverage of the field.

Sometimes there are trade offs, but this zero-sum fixation is a poor and inaccurate model of public opinion. Lots of people are doing lots of different things over huge amounts of time. The idea that *at the margin* Van Hollen's activities with KAG *hurt* senate dems chances seems obviously wrong.

Turns out this is also true of students

K'eeg@armormodekeeg.blacksky.app

a friend of mine who's worked on a somewhat recent free multiplayer game says this about player feedback that I feel like is very astute hearing the feedback is frequently important but responding to it well almost never means just doing what the players say they want

...to chuck all that out and *explicitly* start a war against another MENA state over a WMD issue and lobby for the U.S. to join-- which it does! Wow. The tinder you've thrown on the bonfire of domestic (and global) antisemitism is astounding. Almost hard to believe even Bibi and his compatriots...

Learned last night that we’re getting a Netflix miniseries on the Garfield assassination with Michael Shannon as Garfield and Nick Offerman as Chester A. Arthur, and how are we not all talking about this? www.netflix.com/tudum/articl...

Our series on several odd, shocking, unprovoked attacks in downtown Chicago has finally posted in full on this landing page: (Note: the Chicago Sun-Times has no paywall.) (1/9) chicago.suntimes.com/the-watchdog...

LET'S GO

Star:Line Chicago@starlinechicago.bsky.social

Doomsday is back, and just like last time, maybe relatively small tweaks to the RTA will buy us another 15 years or so, or maybe we do real, lasting, meaningful reforms this time around to finally get a proper unified 21st-Century transit network off the ground

The basic problem with Shor and acolytes is that his entire approach to political targeting is built on the idea that voters are making decisions individually, based on their personal beliefs and preferences, and thus you can sample how voters react to an ad or message and see if it's good

The @chicago.suntimes.com is doing great work under Chicago Public Media ownership and I am proud to give them my money instead of any of the billionaire-owned publications.

Mike Masnick@masnick.com

Or to, uh, support the media that's already here and not just kowtowing to the new regimes. There are a bunch of small, independent media properties that could do absolute wonders with a tiny amount of the money that billionaires threw at politics last year.

begging fact-checkers to stop using 'lacks evidence' if its implication, that evidence could be provided later to validate the statement, is also false

Saying "data doesn't lie" is like saying "words don't lie."

Johnson: "Elon's cracked the code. He's now inside these agencies. He's created these algorithms that are constantly crawling through the data & as he told me in his office, data doesn't lie. We're gonna be able to get the information. We're gonna be able to transform the way federal govt works."
