Is this a “hot take”? The MCU movies are basically where Marvel Comics were about 1980 — fun but stale & formulaic. The movies need creative equivalents of Frank Miller, Bill Sienkiewicz, Walt Simonson, etc, to breathe new life into the series. Superheroes are fine but they need creativity & vision.

Was watching some MCU movies with my kid and the films really reminded me of that old book Learn to Draw Comics the Marvel Way, from 1977. No offense to John Buscema, but that was a bit of an artistic low point. Can you imagine what a movie equivalent to Bill Sienkiewicz’s New Mutants would be like?

Someone really needs to put together a website dedicated to judging these takes later, after a year or two or whatever, tallying up who tends to get it right and who’s totally wrong. Accountability!

The New York Times wrote articles that were like "the impossible-to-characterize elusive politics of Elon Musk / he's lost interest in politics" right before he became *literally the largest GOP donor in history* the next election cycle. Twice. Two times!

Oh geez… The Chosun has a panicky story about the exploding debt in Gyeonggi Province — going from 1.7 trillion won in 2020 to 6.1 trillion won last year. Horrible right? But they fail to mention Gyeonggi has a budget of 42 trillion won. So, not exactly crippling. www.chosun.com/english/mark...

chosun.comGyeonggi Province's Debt Jumps 243% on Welfare Spending, Revenue SlumpGyeonggi Provinces Debt Jumps 243% on Welfare Spending, Revenue Slump Welfare expansion and declining real estate taxes caused debt surge, serving as cautionary tale for national fiscal policies

The Korean headline calls it “welfare addiction”. But in general, Korea is really good about keeping government debt low. Household debt is huge, but government spending is very much under control. But no matter, the Chosun has got to Chosun~

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s FLESH IMPACT explores what Marilyn Monroe would be like as a 100y/o actress working in the 21st century. Already garnering Oscar buzz, the short made its Asian debut at the Busan International Film Festival, where I got all the details.

Because let’s face it, all over the world, whenever these separatist movements rise up (Quebec, Brexit, etc), they’re always backed by the worst people and fueled by lies.

Surprised how much VISIONQUEST is MCU-y. But the non-action parts are quite intriguing. It looks excellent. And James Spader is so much dastardly fun. Definitely lots of potential for the series.

Despite living in Korea and going to a range of supermarkets regularly, I can’t recall the last time I saw bananas packaged like this (or if I ever did).

In South Korea, supermarkets often offer bananas at varying levels of ripeness so customers can eat them over several days and reduce food waste. Original post

This sent me Googling about Swiss Family Robinson, and I ended up with so many TILs: • There was a TV movie of SFR in the 1950s starring Dennis Hopper & Patti Duke • Lost in Space was based on SFR • A Canadian and a US TV version of SFR both were aired in mid-1970s • The US version has Helen Hunt.

Just watched the excellent HERETIC. Hard to think of an actor who’s had a more interesting career arc than Hugh Grant. Funny that the FOUR WEDDINGS guy has become such an excellent villain/scumbag.

Well, this is frightening.

MIT Media Lab’s Kevin Esvalt: “Russia's five-hospital quarantine, FSB involvement, and…hazmat use in response to the death of a single researcher at a weapons-lineage Irkutsk lab are inconsistent with a lab-acquired plague infection, which would have been treated with prophylactic antibiotics.

I mean, the big bad guy is depression. That was a weird direction for a superhero movie to go in. Come to think of it, a lot of the MCU’s best films are the ones where the big climax isn’t solved by fighting (Thunderbolts, Doctor Strange, the latest Spider-Man).

Ah, one of my favorite times of year in Korea — when the news dutifully reports on travel times during the Chuseok holidays, despite the holidays not having especially bad traffic for years.

Come to think of it, the last few Seollal and Chuseok holidays have been extra long, giving people more time to space out their travel. But this year Chuseok is just 2 days.

Not that he asked my opinion, but if I were Will Stancil, I think I’d divide my Bluesky presence into two — a new, mostly anonymous account for shooting the shit and talking about whatever, and saving his famous account for political, on-brand talk with minimal engagement (maybe turn off replies).
