Here come the results for Helsmouth, Ontario, a bucolic bedroom community of 700K in the Golden Horseshoe, where former Energy Minister Louise Davis is challenging the third term of the former host of The New Bumper Stumpers, Gord Meighton.

Ontario civic election night is so wild because you find out whatever happened to federal cabinet ministers and tv weather presenters: they’re mayors of towns you’ve never heard of that have populations twice the size of Saskatoon. Ontario is absolutely inscrutable to Western Canada.

FLANAGAN: We asked ourselves, 'Why would a man wear his mother's clothes and stab a woman in a shower?' After, all, Norman says he wouldn't hurt a fly. We wanted to reconcile that contradiction. CHOTINER: Soviet mind control is not a solution I'd have thought of. FLANAGAN: [smiling] Thank you.

Liberal democracy remains a towering achievement of humanity and it is worth fighting for.

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

Remember, this all started with Kevin Falcon kicking John Rustad out of the B.C. Liberals for retweeting climate science denialism

I've reported a lot on OneBC and Dallas Brodie, the party that did its best to promote residential school denialism and attack Indigenous rights in this province. Tonight she lost her riding of Vancouver-Quilchena about as hard as you can lose.

I grew up in a lower income immigrant family and we ate at Red Lobster for "special days." But we also understood the White House should not look like the inside of Red Lobster. It's condescending to assuming working ppl are culturally illiterate bc their experience is shaped by their limited means.

I don’t know when WSB wrote this in the copy I’d sent him, except that it would have been over 28 yrs ago, on July 31, in Lawrence. Leary had encouraged him to read Neuromancer and he’d liked it, which thrilled me. We hadn’t yet met, and wouldn’t for a few yrs.

Well, the swamp-cat's outta the swamp-bag, so reckon it's OK to talk about this now. We've been secretly chipping away at this project behind-the-scenes this year, cool to see it announced the very same week the two TYRANT® collected-edition hardcovers are on the printing presses, too!

Remembering the time in 6th grade when I gave a mixtape to a girl i liked, but I forgot to record over the last 90 seconds on Side B, which was me rapping about my GI Joes.

A curious thing about the fondness of many BC Cons people for dropping racial and ethnic slurs is that many would not have passed for white in the white man's province for which their leader Aaron Gunn is so nostalgic. All the more reason to signal you are in the 'in group', perhaps.

Yes, the real danger isn't so much that the AI will choose the targets but rather that the humans responsible will wash their hands of it and say the black box told me to bomb there.

Liberal Currents@liberalcurrents.com

"The U.S. military over-relied on AI for targeting in Iran and as a result bombed an elementary school, killing over 100 children. We have disturbing testimony from Israeli military officers that AI target selection made them feel morally absolved when they killed civilians."

Main & Broadway was the centre of my universe when I first moved to Vancouver. Comics, books, coffee, barber, essential bus transfers. Don’t get over here often anymore. Nice to see it still has some things going for it.

Best visual arts exhibition I've seen locally in a decade plus. At the Pendulum Gallery, on the north side of Georgia Street across from the VAG, where in a more just world this ambitious & satisfying ensemble would be hanging.

I follow a lot of bookstores on instagram so now I get served videos of guys saying “here are 6 absolutely perfect books beyond criticism” and then holding up a copy of Ready Player One.

ah, the perfect crime - no one suspects me. after weeks of silence the case has grown cold and I am in the clear. now why the fuck was that little Belgian twerp staring at me at breakfast? I don’t think his English was very strong. quite annoying. I must ask the butler to disinvite him.

Yes, it's true. Everyone else who crossed Parker is dead. I mean, whole gangs, organizations on national level. The one time someone brought him down he rose again like a fucking revenant... But I really think this particular betrayal will work for me.

I think one reason Jon Ossoff is really popping right now is he's not afraid to say forthrightly that Trump's corrupt enablers should get ready to appear before Congress. He doesn't get derailed by fake MAGA outrage or MSM laundering of it as "controversy." newrepublic.com/article/2168...

This is really good in a bunch of ways. I was especially caught by the materialist explanation of contemporary short story aesthetics (regardless of region, genre, etc.) — stories are published and awarded for the qualities that make them attractive to readers with much too much to read.

Oakland Review of Books@oaklandreviewofbooks.org

"Because I was shortlisted for the Commonwealth prize in 2020, the thought that my story might have been shortlisted because it was “formulaically postcolonial” haunted me." www.oaklandreviewofbooks.org/write-me-a-c...

More meat for the OBC delusional racist base. No broadly acceptable policies in the party platform; time to antagonize a minority group, a right-wing move as old as time, historically (& in many cases, still) turned by the right on women; Black people; queer people; Palestinians; Muslims; Jews...
