battle of the 90s characters- person who thinks bisexuality is fake vs person with a phobia of african bees vs person who refuses to believe a woman with large breasts doesn’t have implants vs the Loch Ness monster obsessive vs the person who lives in smoking section of a restaurant vs maybe vampire

Two things can be true. Absent all other context, I think the rocket Roadster is kinda cool in a dumbass, Monster Truck, bread-and-circuses way. Allowing even microscopic shards of any context, however, Musk is a racist megalamoniacal dipshit whose every move warrants scorn.

So we fly a pride flag in our front yard in a very conservative neighborhood and it’s been there for the last few years. Someone put this in our mailbox and my goodness…

When Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens begins playing “Old Corn Liquor,” a traditional Black American folk tune, acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man recognizes similarities to Chinese pentatonic music and spontaneously joins in. The joy on their faces says it all.

In truth, I don't manifest as all that weird -- though I celebrate the concept. But when I brought in and played the first eight minute's of Jethro Tull's enigmatic concept album, A Passion Play, in 4th Grade Show & Tell, that was at a minimum _perceived_ as pretty effin' weird.

Gail Simone@gailsimone.bsky.social

QUESTION OF THE DAY: This sounds like a joke question, but it isn’t. If it doesn’t apply to you, fine. But it’s a serious question with different levels of meaning. And I am genuinely curious. When did you first realize you were weird?

Oh and also ... that period shortly thereafter running through a good bit of 5tgh and 6th grade where I seriously strived to make sure every sentence I verbally uttered had an even number of syllables. And yeah, then though not now I could count that implicitly.

Things that suck about Facebook's Muse: probably pretty much everything else. Thing that's kinda cool about Facebook's Muse: my niece designed the avatar/logo.

Props to the young women of LR Central. But am I alone in cringing at the nominally valid but to me antiquated use of “coed” to mean female student? There is no analogy for men/boys and thus it strikes me as a sort-of adjunct descriptor.

Anti-abortion, pro-patriarchy protesters greeted Little Rock Central students as buses arrived for school Monday morning. Students responded with rape whistles, heckling and middle fingers hoisted high. 🖤 💛 arktimes.com/arkansas-blo...

I can't even begin to tell you how much I needed this 3rd Bass callback today. We can gas face the Oval Office too, just not the one from that same album.

I'm just going to say it: Markwayne Mullin, YOU get the gas face.

On the flip side, I think people are missing how much of the datacenter build out is not AI. AWS has an obscene margin and is capacity-limited. About 10% of datacenter demand is the AI companies.

brasidas@brasidas.bsky.social

I think there's also arguments against an AI bubble, but this graph tells a very specific story that's hard to argue with. The real fear is that these companies have hidden leverage through future construction deals that radiate through the US economy.

Arizona State?

Vance: "Some of America's most elite universities bring in foreigners to undercut wages of American residents. There are 9 universities in particular we believe merit an investigation. Those are Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, the University of Pittsburg, UC Davis, Cal Tech, Arizona State, and MIT."

All else aside, still wild that I bought and read Drexler's Engines of Destruction (pioneer nanotech work) in 1985 and ALMOST pivoted to a life in academic tech policy (visited progs at Cornell, Penn, and GW) based on nanotech concerns. But I just went and did city stuff instead. Now here we are.

Last note: pivoting to life in the relatively normie trenches doing urban community development work and tech ed was 100% the right call for me. The nature of my intelligence and my fairly inbuilt effort/reward motivational requirements would have made me a terrible fit for that kind of work.

ps: yes, I find the wackos wacko in very many respects. But I'm not as sanguine about the LACK of risk in all this as, perhaps, the median tech-savvy, Yarvin-and-Yud hater on Bluesky (and I am all of those myself).

The pseudonymous account Rev. Howard Arson accused Saeed Ismail of being a fake, AI-generated person. After I wrote about how Saeed is real, Arson is now creating AI videos of Saeed and his blanket. I don’t know Arson’s goal with all of this, but it strikes me as incredibly cruel.

One of my strongest inconsequential opinions. Inline wired earbud mics are fine. Clothing clipped tiny mics are fine. If you are holding a tiny mic with finger and thumb, however, you are committing a crime against humanity.

We made five spice duck breast with blackberries and charred scallion and sesame oil mashed potatoes last night. I’m really glad it’s becoming much easier to find fresh duck at the store.

I don't have a dog in this game, but if the damn ball moves ten yards forward thanks solely to the movement of the QB's arm . . . that's a PRETTY GOOD SIGN that said QB's hand was moving forward on impact. This one wasn't that complicated.

In the early 90s down on ye olde Redwood Street in downtown Baltimore, I worked with a fellow-20-something office manager who enjoyed being extremely transparent about her personal life. "We were REALLY ready to go Saturday night but my guy was out of Trojans. So we used Saran Wrap. Is that cool?"☠️

This is Maeve. She may be the sweetest, most good natured, most trusting dog I have ever met. She was abandoned in DC last week, and since I’m not able to adopt a dog now, I had to turn her over to the Brandywine Animal Shelter. I want to make sure this absolute delight of a dog finds a good home.

My top 5 albums when I turned 18? This would have morphed radically by age 21, but whilst still in high school: - Sandinista, The Clash - Thick as a Brick, Jethro Tull - Moving Pictures, RUSH - Speaking in Tongues, Talking Heads - Abbey Road, Beatles

The Rock Island locks are rubble. The loose meat in the Moline Maid Rite is no long steamed but flash-fried into charcoal bits. Palmer's campus backbone in Davenport is broken. Bettendorf, as yet, remains untouched. As yet.

LSU is far more diverse in its student body than Ole Miss. It's way closer to my personal ideal of the large state school. That being said, in the football dimension: Suck it all night long, Lane.

Baudrillard: "It is no longer a question of imitation, nor of reduplication, nor even of parody. It is rather a question of substituting signs of the real for the real itself... Never again will the real have to be produced: this is the vital function of the model in a system of death"

The wild thing about the current extinction discourse is that at age 21 in 1986 I read Eric Drexler's first major book on nanotech and it legitimately fucked me up deeply. I almost pursued doctoral work in tech policy with an eye towards mitigating nanotech problems. But then I just did other stuff.
