In Germany, the established, civil parties have to return to basics with the electorate. They can no longer assume that everyone agrees on the fundamentals - equality, rule of law, freedom of expression for everyone including hated outsiders, accountability of the state. The AfD challenges these.

They have to acknowledge that a good part of the population does not agree that hated others should be treated equal. So they have to argue to the people against the AfD on this basis. What does it mean to be civilized? What does it mean to be 'german' in relation to culture?

In essence, they have to re-argue enlightenment with the electorate, because a sizable fraction of that is dismissing it. I believe that on this level, the AfD can be beaten because common people do not really want to support thugs. But politicians have to engage. Or they'll lose.

Now the 🇺🇸 ambassador to 🇧🇪 is threatening to destroy the life of the leader of the main centre-left party in Belgium with 🇺🇸sanctions (could no longer use credit cards etc) because he criticised what ICE is doing. And yet these people have the nerve to say it is Europe threatening free speech.

I think, Europe needs to confront the challenge by the Trumpists ("civilisational erasure") directly. What does it mean to be civilized? It is the respect of limits on one's power, rule of law, restraint from acting without due process, acceptance of inherent rights of others and own fallibility.

The problem with the European response so far, is that we are not saying this. In not standing by our own civilisation, we risk eventually giving it up, for the sake of avoiding conflict. Carney was the first who said clearly "We stand by ourselves". Europe does not (yet) and that is our failure.

This casts into doubt our own adherence to our own professed values. How is our reaction (Rutte's daddy talk) different from the servile compliance of US corporations? How does this not imply that for us, money counts more than values, as is the case with those corporations?

All these things are what the Trump admin hates and tries to evade. Europe needs to say clearly, without anger - Indeed. Civilisation hangs in the balance. You are giving it up.

Why is Ukraine able to withstand war & bombing like it is? Because of the Maidan - refounding the will of the people to their own democratic self determination. Why can we in Europe not bring ourselves to support UA like we should, in our own interest? Because we did not have this for too long.

Here's something from my own world. A little SEM image, as one can see, in BSE mode. It shows magnesiowuestite crystals - the round shapes - which experienced wild swings in T & oxygen potential. So they multiply exsolved, and iron is reduced (the white patches). We use this as natural sensors.
