It’s brilliant the PM has recognised the issues Lib Dems have campaigned on for so long are central to fixing our country & growing our economy. As a result of his speech, social care, closer ties with EU and PR are now firmly in the political mainstream, which is exactly where we want them to be.

More local control over water would be a good step forward. The Conservatives let water companies dump sewage in our rivers, harbours and seas and, across Hampshire, Lib Dem MPs and councils, working alongside local people, have led the campaigning to sort this out. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are missing out. Areas with Mayors are getting more money and Mayoral powers - money and powers that we can't get until May 2028. Please sign my petition asking Andy Burnham to bring the election forward to next May. www.martin4mayor.org.uk/have-your-sa...

martin4mayor.org.ukEnd the delay: give us a Mayoral election in 2027 - Martin TodMartin Tod, the Liberal Democrat candidate for Mayor of Hampshire and the Solent area is campaigning for Mayoral election to be brought forward to May 2027.

One of Starmer's failures was that he didn't pick a Chancellor who was good at things he wasn't. Neither Chancellor nor PM stopped the Winter Fuel Allowance fiasco, for example. With all the chat about Burnham as a leader and PM, I'm surprised there's so little discussion about his likely team.

Fantastic result in Winchester for the Lib Dems – 7/7 of the Hampshire County Council seats in the district and 13/15 of the City Council seats up for election. We beat every single Conservative incumbent.

More investment by tombola. Fund local government properly.

A new UK Government fund will help councils repair bridges, flyovers and tunnels across England. Part of a £1bn package, it aims to improve safety and reliability. Bids close in August 2026, with decisions due in autumn. dft-newsroom.prgloo.com/news/fixing-...

Now *that* is an air source heat pump. Congratulations to Ben and the team at Winchester Science Centre for getting rid of their oil-fired boiler and replacing it with this beauty! The centre is still warm and welcoming (and, of course, still fun and inspiring too). But now low carbon as well!

We did this in Winchester to secure much needed social homes and rebalance our city's estates away from HMOs. No apologies. No regrets.

Well there might be a reason for that and that might even be related to RTB. Telegraph concerned that taxpayers are funding social housing but seemingly unconcerned that taxpayers funded RTB by selling public assets at less than market prices

It’s such a mess. Two weeks after the Mayoral elections were put back by two years, the Labour government is now asking councils if we want to delay county, district and unitary elections as well.

Regular elections are one of the most important ways that the public can hold councils and councillors to account. If people don’t like what we’re doing, they can vote us out – and quite right too: that’s democracy.

In practice, this means they will be cancelled. County elections have already been delayed by one year and if they don’t go ahead in 2026, I don’t see how they ever will. County Councillors would end up serving seven-year terms without facing the voters: an absolute democratic disgrace.

Read of the day: Ben canters through recent pro-bubble literature. The most surprising thing for me is his argument that by massively augmenting the demand for energy at this (imho fraught) time, the data centre bubble might leave a hugely positive legacy. stratechery.com/2025/the-ben...

stratechery.comThe Benefits of BubblesWe are in an AI Bubble: the big question is if this bubble will worth it for the physical infrastructure and coordinated innovation that result?

Nationalism is a shibboleth. The challenges we face are daunting. But we are not going to overcome them by hunkering down behind of imaginary lines scrawled on a map by medieval warlords. Our problems are transnational, and the solutions are too.

Organisations and teams can only get the award if they 'go the extra mile for animal welfare': so great to see that recognised. (And good to see Fleur and Smudge come along for the celebrations too!)

Absolutely delighted to hear about Alex Drage's victory in the Yateley West by-election. It was such a pleasure to campaign for someone who's so committed to strong action on cutting carbon and reversing the decline in biodiversity and nature.

Great to chat with Ed Davey at his book signing hosted by One Tree Books. So many people came to hear Ed speak not only about his personal experiences as a carer; but also the Lib Dems’ care policies and our willingness to take a different approach to solving the care crisis in our country.

A quick reminder that no dog died from missing a walk, but many dogs have died as a result of being exercised in hot weather! I've treated many dogs with heat stroke and it is often fatal, which is heartbreaking for the owners.

A more interesting question is whether other areas should have assemblies, rather than the 'combined authority' model.

📢No, Greater London shouldn’t become more like Greater Manchester "The goal should be to give the mayors the autonomy the Mayor of London has, rather than weakening the mayoral model in the Capital." Read our latest blog from @paulswinney.bsky.social 👇
