With several new followers: I have one foot in Classics/ancient history and another in the writing community. I teach Greek history at the Univ. of Nebraska-Omaha, answer "asks" on Tumblr as public history, and write history-inspired SFF and historical fiction. Not a prolific poster here, alas.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was driving his construction crew to work when an ICE officer shot and killed him in Houston. He wasn’t even the person ICE was looking for. Now Texas voters are leaving their “I Voted” stickers at his memorial. #BlueWaveIn10Days

Gavin Newsom knows how to fight back against Trump because he's cut from the same cloth. That makes him a good attack dog. But we don't want him for president.

Cut off his access to all the services property taxes fund and see if he understands how stupid that question is.

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

Update: without explanation, and after being suspended for more than an hour during peak mobilization time, Zuckerberg's Instagram restored the No Kings account but we still lack admin access. More to come. Rest assured we will not stop organizing against this regime and its collaborators.

Ezra Levin ❌👑@ezralevin.bsky.social

❗❗❗Mark Zuckerberg's meta just suspended the No Kings Instagram account. I just rushed back from my local No Kings to jump on this. Bottom line, would be helpful for all pro-No Kings folks to elevate the issue and help us get the word out about No Kings today. The Nerd Reich strikes again.

Read the ENTIRE thread.

As a PhD student designing my first survey, I added what I thought was a throwaway question at the end. To my surprise, thousands of academics answered it! The paper is out today: doi.org/10.1093/pnas...

I double-checked this on a couple of Xitter stat sites and it's true. Average views of the main AfD account dropped 90% and average engagement dropped by 60%. This is commercial social media for you: bots, damn bots and Russian bots.

We’ve been talking about this for years. None of these far-right movements are organic.

22 California billionaires have spent a combined $150 million so far to defeat Prop 40. By spending their fortunes trying to stop California from taxing billionaires, they're making the argument for a billionaire wealth tax more clearly and articulately than anyone else possibly could.

I miss having a president. I mean a REAL president -- someone who works and lives the position. Someone who doesn't shame us but instead is always a person to respect and be proud of. Someone like Barack Obama.

This is wonderful news. I dearly love her translation of The Bakkhai, and use it in class.

Congratulations to Anne Carson, Canadian poet, essayist and translator who won the Nobel Prize in literature this morning. Carson also holds Icelandic citizenship. In an age of growing AI, it's ever more important to recognize and honor the world's great writers and poets. #NobelPrize

Yes. Newly minted phuds should be allowed time for their diss to sit & simmer, and like good chili, get far better/more complex. I am glad I did NOT rush to pub my Hephaistion diss. When the Heph/Krateros book I'm writing now does come out (30 years later)? It'll be different...and SO much better.

One of the most widely cited and esteemed scholars I know published his first book (which changed the field) when he was 50 and by then had long been employed by a university. This was in the 1980s.

AI isn't reliable enough to get even a hamburger order right, but reckless Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is pushing to expand artificial intelligence across the U.S. military, including AI-enabled targeting. "Would you like fries with that obliterated girls' school?"

Replying to @tedmccormick.bsky.social

but my educated (no pun intended) guess is that pretty much every university administration is generating (pun intended) the same statements about putting genAI everywhere to prepare students for the future, making the same confused gurgling noises about its risks, and leaving the fallout to faculty

It feels like we’re five weeks from a dangerous precipice - people vs. corporations! 😬

Billionaire political spending was about $16 million in 2008. In 2026, it could reach $2–3 billion. Whatever your politics, that’s a staggering shift in who has the financial power to shape American elections.

September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. Today is a time to raise awareness of the ongoing impacts of residential schools and remember the children who never came home. How are you honouring the day?

3xs Cy Young winner, the great Justin Verlander. My 2nd favorite Tiger of all time. (The immortal Al Kaline is 1st; I got to see him play as a little girl.) So glad they brought him back and he got to retire in a Tigers uniform. (Even if they didn't get a W that night.)

MLB@mlbbot.bsky.social

Thank you, Justin Verlander 🧡 JV leaves the mound for the Tigers - one final time.

And appropriately in a Detroit uniform. So glad they got him back before he ended his career. Super sweet way to go, too, with his daughter.

Codify Baseball@codifybaseball.bsky.social

Future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander leaves the field for the last time.

Indeed, the cruelty is the point. Also, the cis gay men and lesbians who abandoned the trans & intersex communities... yeah, they're coming for you too. (Fortunately most of the queer folk I know, cis or not, are well aware of that, but a few believe it won't happen to them....)

It should not be lost on any of us that Cornell University swiftly suspended students for peacefully protesting atrocities against women and children, but allowed men who drugged and gang-raped a woman for seven hours to write an essay and continue with their education.

Happy Caturday from Beatrice. While pulling basil leaves to make pesto, she had to get up on the counter to inspect. I let her sniff my fingers and all I can say… She’s not a basil fan. Funniest disgusted face. #SiameseBluesky #Siamesecats

Corporate Dems care about corporate donors and not the will and best interest of their constituents and democracy. This is CATASTROPHICALLY STUPID advice. Dem establishment determined to claw defeat from the jaws of victory.

This is an excellent discussion (imo) from Parkrose Permaculture (video). As absolutely awful as some of these people are, the collapse of small and smaller farms is not good overall, and simply accelerates a problem already in the offing.

TRG Movies & Entertainment@trg-commentary.bsky.social

Yeah... right? Where did all the "illegal" farm workers go (hint: ICE, ICE, Baby!)? Suddenly they have to pay up for their racism: 20 bucks an hour plus free housing or you can yank the tits of your cows yourself! That's FAFO for MAGA! youtu.be/cmFjV4D-D3c

Incredible. First Secretary Mullin claimed that DHS had identified 15,903 noncitizens on Nevada’s voter roll. Then DHS officials told a skeptical Nevada, no no no, that’s just people we flagged. Here are the names of 185 people we KNOW aren’t citizens. All 185 were citizens. DHS got 100% wrong.

From 16,000 to 185 to Zero: Trump’s Claims of Illegal Voting in Nevada Fizzle. "The state sent a strongly worded rebuke to the federal government: Every single person on the list was a lawful citizen."
