Really excited to announce a joint symposium between Africana and Digital and Computational Studies at Bates May 14 (evening) & 15th (all day). There is a CFP up for oral and poster abstracts with the option to apply for funding for early career researchers. Pls share!

Hey @apsphysics.aps.org...why the hell are you bringing in Heritage Foundation supported people to steer the direction of the NSF?????

WTF is happening here?
AMS is listed as a partner... do they know what is happening? I say this in the most gracious way because I was part of a math working group for this early pilot work, and it was the opposite of everything Heritage Foundation stands for &

When people are like "WhY WoUlD TrUmP ShUt DoWn DaTa CoLleCtIoN?" it's because the data doesn't lie like the Trump administration.
When people in power compromise independent data collection, THE FIRST QUESTION should be "WHAT THE HELL DO THEY WANT US TO NOT SEE???"
Yet more context to evaluate this week's announcement of NSF investment in "foundational" research. It is hard to build a foundation when the administration is actively undermining NSF capacity to issue awards and support use-driven basic research at institutions nationwide.
Scoop: For nearly a year, NSF has struggled to make new grants. Now we know that it will not catch up.
In fact, NSF will award just 6,100 new grantsâa 30% y/o/y decline, itself down from a previous avg. of 11,000+. In fact, the last time NSF awarded so few grants was in the early '80s.
At the #Mathfest SPECTRA town hall, sneaking in a few minutes before my former student/alum, Paige gives a talk at 10.
So much fun to see all these wonderful people here. Fills my heart! #MathCommunity
#Mathfest Community-Engaged Learning in Math panel. PIC Math has been mentioned several times. A lot of people utilizing CEL for capstone courses. Great for authentic career experiences.
Introducing the Mathematical Modeling Challenge @ MathFest (MMCM), open to registered MathFest attendees!

If you are in Boston for #Mathfest hope over to the Boston Public Library. You can also grad a reservation at the Courtyard Tea Room on Open Table.
Thanks, Erin for being my PhD BFF for 21 years!!
Also, take some time to walk through the library. It is open to the public. Then hop on Newbury street for some brownstone architecture and shops. The original Newbury comics is up there my Mass Ave. #Mathfest
We are told "ICE agents have been told to end most vehicle stops nationwide after fatal shootings in Texas and Maine."
Collins takes credit. BUT it's bull. Just like when they said they stopped "Catch of the Day" in Maine.

"A source cited by Fox News told the outlet that agents have been instructed only to pursue traffic stops targeting individuals with serious or violent criminal histories."
This is the same line they've been trying to feed us all along. This is no policy win by Collins or anyone else. #AbolishICE
Stopping Voughtâs proposed rule will be critical to save science and future cures.
@standupforscience.net created an action center to help you comment and contact Congress.
Time to get loud!

Lots of good points in this piece. In addition, the scolds saying people shouldn't advocate against data centers are missing an important point -- there is widespread, bi-partisan anger about the way data center developers are doing these projects, and it makes organizing easy. 1/
This is a good reminder. A lot of people have been looking at the content and not as much at the big picture. @timnitgebru.blacksky.app reminds us that we need to beware the ethics washing and understand the histories and motivations of these organizations.
Well, with this official Vatican + Anthropic mandate,
I guess it was only a matter of time when the religion of effective altruism, worshipping so-called artificial general intelligence, merged with entrenched religious institutions.
Wow... tech has tried to close libraries for ages, yet they stick as community centers. To see such an extraordinary shift, likely in response to mounting budget pressures and the rise of LLMs, is really saddening.
I really related to a lot of this.
I don't know @grahamformaine.bsky.social myself. My family in Sullivan knows him, though, and is excited to support him. I have been really excited but have been trying to check my bias. đ€Ł But I resonate a lot with what @blackgirlinmaine.bsky.social says here.
We need more conversations, not less.
More public engagement, rather than hiding and hoping that the threat will dissipate.
More frank discussions of the ongoing harm and the missed opportunities to transform our world for the better.
And we cannot wait until 2029.
Behind every data point captured in this survey is a person whose life, career, and well-being were impacted by the illegal probationary employee firings in February 2025.
When Johnny DuPree won his Mississippi Senate seat in November 2025, it marked the first time Hattiesburg residents would have a Black senator representing them in Jackson, even though 51% of the cityâs population is Black.
The U.S. Supreme Court has reversed the ruling that made that possible.
Incredible that the only way to get the machine to pronounce the name correctly relies on the solution we already have! We solved mispronunciation already, without needing this!
Truly a perfect encapsulation of these AI applications: "fixing" an already solved issue with added dehumanization
AI nonsense aside, the Gowers post links to an article titled "Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for Problems in Additive Number Theory". I looked at it, curious what the author had to say about equity and inclusion in number theory, or in math more broadly.
Spoiler: Nothing
Breaking: Trump has fired the membership of the National Science Board, which is oversees NSF.
I have confirmed separately with multiple now-former members of NSB.

So the author is at my institution. Our CTL collaborates with units, they add to expertise. We are lucky to have finally been able to get a CTL. The Chronicle article is not informed. It is a Philosophical hot take that disses CTLs and a field in order to remind depts to pedagically engage. 1/2
I couldn't resist the urge to write a parody of at least the first part of the article. My own rhetorical efforts, I hope, are appreciated.

Great panel right now at the ADSA Leadership Summit on Data Science and AI on Responsible AI and public engagement.
@kstsosie.bsky.social will you be here? Miss you!

Listening to @benblumsmith.bsky.social - Math and Democracy is a big tent & there are many ways to get involved. Was just talking to @victorpiercey.bsky.social about wanting to expand math and democracy convos beyond voting apportionment (though that is also important!) #jmm2026
Grading and googling hallucinated citations, as one does nowadays, and now that LLMs have been around for a while, I've discovered new horrors: hallucinated journals are now appearing in Google Scholar with dozens of citations bc so many people are citing these fake things

My brain is now done for work so you get the benefit of the quick synopsis and my whole hearted recommendation! 1/4
To the MedellĂn conference, which sparked a recommitment to the poor (Pope Francis was informed by this) and to influence on Latinx civil rights and farm worker movement. It also nods to our current times and ICE, though was written to nod to the last Trump administration. 3/4
Awaiting their Feast looks at Latinx food activism and the desire for latino labor alongside the animosity towards latino immigration. It focuses on the Northeast with a considerable amount of time on Maine. It is a fascinating read. 4/4

Brown Church suggests that the Latine Church, while seeming at first like a choque in Nepantla to some atheist liberals, instead has defined its own theology that takes a buen vivir like stance. It chronicles a broader history from Freire to De la Vega and the Virgen Guadalupe... 2/4
