Sauron has claimed a refutation of the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH). Frodo, Sam and Pippin have been invited to Mordor and asked to organise a community-led effort to evaluate this claim. Should they accept?

Really don't love this new thing where random people track down* my personal email to send me their AI slop papers claiming to solve problems I've worked on. *I am actually guessing they use chat GPT for this too

In addition, these papers are written (extruded, really) absolutely terribly. They are horribly difficult to read, if that was something I wanted to do. Yet these people want me to do so, unpaid, and tell them what a brilliant result they have made with their bullshit machine.

I wish more people understood that every minute they spend engaging with AI slop papers is time they could instead spend reading a junior colleague's paper and offering feedback and guidance, or time they could spend with their students helping them see the joy and beauty of math.

When I look at them there are clearly ideas from my work, but always only like 8 citations to provide the briefest of context for the problem. Never is a technique or idea credited to someone.

Actually from several moves ago, but: you can* pay people to help you pack, as well as to help you move *I recognize this is a privilege, but one I didn't know was even an option for a while Also, label everything in absurd levels of detail. This makes unpacking over time so much easier.

hey here's a late-night friday question for the skeeterfolk: what's a thing you didn't do the last time you moved, and wished you had? (i'm moving in a couple weeks and while I've moved a bunch in life, I do love a good tip)

I am becoming increasingly convinced that this journal's technical editor I am forced to deal with is an LLM rather than an actual person.

As grumpy as I get about tap lists that are 80% IPAs, I am taking a moment tonight to celebrate that my local beer garden had both a Dortmunder export and an altbier on tap today. (As well as 11 IPAs)

There’s this thing that people do right now like “don’t judge me i used AI lol” like if you object you’re the prude and it’s like babes this isn’t a scam you’re running on a corporation, this is you participating in our society’s demise. Please let’s just be literate.

If one of my students (correctly) called me out for feeding them AI slop I would die of shame, not write (or have AI write) a blog post about it.

In this month’s There and Back Again on Math Values, Lew Ludwig explores what happens when AI co-writes your course notes and a student reads them more closely than you did. Read here: https://maa.org/math-values/there-and-back-again-the-act-of-taste/

There about a million ballot propositions on this ballot and I thought it would be hard to sort them all out, but it turns out for 90% of them I can just see which ones Sergey Brin supports and do the opposite of that

Sergey Brin doesn't care about my town council election but half of the candidates think Flock is good, so that makes things easy as well.

Lovely having my morning coffee in the midst of the redwoods

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

This reminded me of a post I saw today from a mathematician-turned-AI-bro noting (without an ounce of self awareness) the exponential increase in submissions to arXiv and math journals

Butlerian Jihadist of House Dornick@shimminykricket.blacksky.app

Harvard just dropped a study AI productivity in software engineering and it found the average increase in productivity from using Claude code is.....zero and for exactly the reasons you'd think fion.ac/jellyfish.pdf

This is fine, but AI bots do not respect copyright or license terms, why should we expect they will respect this toggle?

I think administrators cowing to media pressure hurts the reputation of a university much more than piloting a long overdue and quite modest change to grading practices.

Imagine replacing people with tokens for plagiarism slot machines. This is why I take the extreme position that LLM-fuelled papers are not research, should not be read or cited, and should definitely count in one’s CV, but negatively.

Alexander Kasprzyk@amkasprzyk.bsky.social

There is a strong interest in using grants to buy more tokens. Many people have said that they get more research value in tokens than students: turning down a department-funded PhD studentship in exchange for tokens is surprisingly popular; replacing PDRAs with tokens on grants too.

Replying to @cassandrapaul.bsky.social

For physics instructors, the takeaway is important: if our grading practices heavily penalize blank responses, exams may disadvantage some student groups and may not measure physics understanding equally well across students.

Starting to get kinda annoyed at senior mathematicians saying "I use AI to speed up my work because I have to. But we must protect junior researchers from being scooped. I just have no idea how!" You are the ones doing the scooping!
