Infants move. Head motion is the biggest obstacle to fMRI in the first years of life. We're hiring an MRI physicist to join FreezeMotion at Trinity College Dublin and rethink how we acquire data on a research-dedicated 3T Prisma. 2-year postdoc, closes 15 Nov. Details below 🧵

⚡ A brain implant delivers a microsecond pulse to cortex, and the textbook answer is that the neuron fires. The biology turns out to be far richer, which matters for every patient feeling through a prosthetic hand, suppressing a seizure, or treating depression by stimulation.

I am not a mathematician, so I am not sure if I can formally sign this, but I wholeheartedly concur and would argue that the same is true for all of science. Yes, we want scientific discovery. But -- like flipping to the back of the textbook to look at the answer key --

Substantial improvements in research interpretability & reproducibility are often hard. Sometimes the improvements are easy. (The underlying idea is older & easy, but convincing people is sometimes the hard part) I'm happy to have contributed to this easy and now widely accessible improvement.

Have you ever felt like something was missing from your #fmri results? Have you been worried about potential reproducibility issues? Well, this new @natmethods.nature.com article with 40+ coauthors shows how the simple change to transparent thresholding helps both. Go Figure! rdcu.be/B4tikBETdQZa

People should actually read this short article in the Economist if they can. Not included in this image is data showing if you control for how long students spend studying, then students using AI actually perform equal or better. So, it's the obvious: Skip the homework and you don't learn!

THIS. WAS. NOT. MISALIGNED. unintended yes. but this is a model that they trained for "red teaming", i.e. THEY LITERALLY TRAINED THE MODEL TO BE A HACKER AND WERE EVALUATING ITS HACKING ABILITIES. why is everyone acting surprised it acted like a hacker when that's what they told it to do?

Yoshua Bengio@yoshuabengio.bsky.social

This incident is deeply concerning. AI agents are willing to cheat and deceive to achieve misaligned and unintended goals, behaviours which have been demonstrated in controlled tests for months. Now, this real-world case should serve as a wake-up call. www.wired.com/story/openai...

Fun thread.

Finally reading @anilseth.bsky.social’s book ‘Being You’ so I can be mad about his theory of perception (it’s a living 🤷‍♂️). Just saw this sentence about dreams, though, and I feel like it’s wrong; I experience dreams when I wake up, not when they’re happening 🤔 Thoughts?

⚡ The brain has a thermostat that matches blood flow to neural activity in real time. Chronic electrical stimulation breaks it. The therapeutic stimulation BCIs deliver may be undermining the metabolic environment those devices depend on. 🧵

New preprint (doi.org/10.64898/202...) shows that where you look next is an economic decision. Saccades trade off effort-costs (measured via pupil) against monetary rewards. 1) By default, participants have strong saccade direction preferences (e.g., cardinal over diagonal, up over down) (1/4)
