Interesting. When we investigated Trump’s South Florida properties in 2016, one Russian buyer “posted a photograph of himself on his Facebook page posing alongside Alexander Zaldostanov, leader of the ‘Night Wolves’ biker gang” www.reuters.com/article/worl...

Some details: Kremlev, the Russian who sponsored Don Jr's wedding, is a former member of the Night Wolves biker gang, went to China with Putin and is personally sanctioned by Ukraine for his role in abducting children www.propublica.org/article/dona...

Had a flashback to the days when you phoned a number and any one of several people might have picked up the phone and you might need to be pleasant to them for five seconds.

“The shift comes two decades after widespread criticism of an American military base set up in the ruins of the ancient city of Babylon and the looting of the Baghdad Museum prompted the Pentagon to revamp its policies on protection of cultural sites.”

“In recent wars, Bryant said, historical landmarks would have been included on "no strike lists.” Dropping bombs on or near these sites, he said, required both a compelling military necessity, such as protecting the lives of soldiers, and high-level approval, sometimes even from the White House.”

“Reuters spoke to eight experts in Middle Eastern archaeology and preservation of heritage sites who said the reporting shows a clear shift in U.S. targeting practices and priorities away from protecting internationally recognized historical landmarks.”

🗣️ I'm the guest on the latest episode of "On Assignment," the weekly interview show from the Reuters newsroom.

“…I’ve seen firsthand how Americans tend to interpret discomfort as a failure of infrastructure, whereas Europeans seem much more willing to regard it as part of life. These contrasting views have resulted in far too much air-conditioning on one side and not remotely enough on the other.”

apple.newsThe Overlooked Reason Europe Doesn’t Have AC — The AtlanticAmericans and Europeans tend to have very different ideas about physical suffering and sacrifice.
The Atlantic@theatlantic.com

Debates about air-conditioning availability in France reveal a fundamental divide about how America and Europe address discomfort, @chatterton.bsky.social argues:

“A middle path is possible. For European leaders, it will mean adapting and installing more air-conditioning particularly in schools, public transportation, and hospitals..”

“Maternity wards are overheating, hundreds of thousands of poultry have perished, and cities across the country banned alcohol sales and public consumption in an effort to ease an overburdened health-care system. Americans may have become too intolerant of heat, but this is patently ridiculous.”

Maybe I am wrong but it seems like UK has flawed all-or-nothing argument about AC - “we have old buildings” that can’t be retrofitted with ducts. A simple portable AC with a hose out a door/window is more than sufficient to create a cool space to, you know, not suffer heat-related injury or death.

I used to tell more junior colleagues who gave a second thought to opting for a seat with more legroom or getting that 4-star hotel instead of a 3-star for a reporting trip, “We paid Megyn Kelly $69 million to go away.” www.nbcnews.com/news/all/meg...

Dear Mother, By the time you receive this letter, I hope our long hours of guarding the nation’s Reflecting Pool will be over. The camp has been struck by dysentery from the algae. I thought arresting people for no reason would prove more fun, but all I want now is to return home. Your loving son.

I love a lot about the UK but one thing that gets me on a soapbox is the lack of adequate AC when heat like this is becoming a more common issue. I’m still utterly astounded at the number of hospitals without air conditioning.

Can someone offer up the best way to cleanly maintain two different QGIS versions on a Mac? I would like to have self-contained versions of the LTR and the new v4.

I’ve lived in the UK for roughly eight years and the one thing about this part of the world that still baffles me are the showers with half a door. Is it to save a few pounds/Euros? Why is it seemingly preferable for the water to get everywhere? Can someone explain this silliness?

Something I've learned about having a UK residence: Filling out web forms is always adventure. Is your option going to be the United Kingdom? Great Britain? England? England and Wales?

Reuters reporting from the Iran-Iraq border shows how U.S. and Israeli hopes that Kurdish fighters would come to their aid collapsed under two pressures: mixed signals from DC & Jerusalem, and a relentless campaign of military strikes and threats against Kurds on both sides of the border by the IRGC

John spent 8 weeks in Iraq’s Kurdish autonomous region, talking to exiled Kurdish Iranian fighters & senior Iraqi officials. We analysed U.S.-Israeli strikes in Iran & Iranian attacks against the Kurds, and spoke by phone to residents of predominantly Kurdish areas in Iran.

For journalists, humanitarians and other non-governmental types using earth observation data, the unfortunate lesson we must take from this shutdown of commercial satellite data by US providers is that we cannot rely on American earth observation companies alone. www.reuters.com/business/med...

We must now recognise that any crisis of interest to American politicians could lead to a shutdown of the flow of information from providers. We must diversify.
