Nearly all American history can be understood as an argument over two words in its founding declaration's most famous line - over whether its self-evident truths applied to all people or just some of them. The throughline connecting the Confederacy to today's right wing is...

Ah yes, the perennial struggle between those who always want to critique power and never exercise it, and the rest of us who kinda have opinions on both of those things.

eh go fuck yourself. "be neutral on [insert interest] when you run and then stick it to the industry when you win" is a time honored way of actually getting things done.

The dynamic is that anecdotalists were very mad when polling averages revealed that anecdotes were subpar predictors for election results and then they were very happy when 2016 offered a reminder to everyone that polls themselves were subject to errors and so maybe anecdotes were just as good?

Shooting at a car to stop a shoplifter is not justified. Even if no one was harmed, let alone shooting to death a 1 year-old baby.

JUST IN: The police shooting that killed 1-year-old Kohen Wiley as he sat in his mother’s lap in a Walmart parking lot in Senatobia, Miss., in June “was justified,” Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch’s office said on Monday. Her office will not charge the white officer who shot the child.

the other thing is that conservatives resolutely do not see the purpose of education as providing social mobility but as reifying and deepening existing inequalities of status. they are as hostile to low income students getting admission to elite institutions as they are black ones.

Sure, a lot of white Americans were so convinced that he's not black that in a backlash they elected an unrepentant white supremacist after him.

It’s said one of Obama’s superpowers was convincing a lot of white Americans he wasn’t Black. That’s what we need, because the structural changes required would be very easy to get polarized quickly

When Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens begins playing “Old Corn Liquor,” a traditional Black American folk tune, acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man recognizes similarities to Chinese pentatonic music and spontaneously joins in. The joy on their faces says it all.

The white evangelical movement split in the 1970s so those who hated civil rights, especially for women, could boost right-wing Republicans. Talarico is reclaiming the movement for the others, and it is a very different thing indeed. Jimmy Carter v. Jerry Falwell.

@meidastouch.com @hcrichardson.bsky.social This is so powerful from James Talarico. This man doesn't need to have memes of himself dressed up like Jesus, he has him in his heart. youtube.com/shorts/WJ02N...

Congress is abdicating its power of the purse in real time. It's the most important Article I power it has, and like the power to declare war, Congress seems willing to let the executive just walk all over it. The framers perhaps never anticipated that it would just voluntarily hand over its powers.

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

In two years we've gone from a standard where the President's budget proposal was a set of suggestions Congress would ignore to where Congressional appropriations are now a set of suggestions the President ignores.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

So I posted yesterday about how remarkably effective @abdulelsayed.bsky.social and his campaign have been especially in their comms, and I immediately got a reply and a follow from this strange account that is either a paid Russian troll or a bot with a stolen identity of an actual person in MI. 🧵

El-Sayed's campaign has an S-tier media strategy. The way he handled this gotcha question and got the reporter to admit that his own question was based on a false premise - *chef's kiss*. If Rogers ever shows up for a debate, bro's gonna eat him for breakfast. youtu.be/nUcLoTTlDV0

Coincidentally perhaps, Istok is not a Lithuanian name, but a Russian/Slavic name. In any case, I have no doubt that it's a troll account. But what's interesting is that it either is an actual person trolling, or a bot that is pretending to be an actual resident of a Detroit suburb.

Anyway, I see some normal accounts engaging with this like it's a normal person, and not realizing it's a troll perhaps because it's a bit less obvious than your run-of-the-mill troll. But yeah, if you ever come across it, block it immediately, and don't look back.

This account obsessively posts about AES both as someone on the right and as someone on the left who supports AES (but is still opposed to Dems). This is like a textbook Russian bot. So far so boring, but here is where it gets interesting...

The account claims to be a "Lithuanian cyber security expert" as well as a LEGO expert and the name might correspond to an actual resident of St Clair Shores, MI, based on this 15 year old post on a LEGO nerd forum where he sounds like one of the elder nerds. www.eurobricks.com/forum/forums...

As a descriptivist, there probably aren't any usage/grammar hills I'd die on (and I'd happily end a sentence with a proposition), but... one of my pet peeves is the usage of "begs the question" to mean "raises the question" instead of "assumes the conclusion" (circular logic).

The accounting problem is that harvested wood products get treated as storage regardless of what happens downstream. Once a protocol credits the removal at harvest, the incentive runs ahead of any verification of permanence. Brazilian forestry would feel this quickly.

I'm no campaign expert, but this doesn't sound like a winning message if your constituents are farmers who are particularly sensitive to diesel and fertilizer prices (on top of tariffs on their two main exports).
