NEW: I spoke with current and former EA employees to understand how the latest layoff round played out and the realities of daily life at the U.S. publisher. The short version? EA is controlled by an executive class that "cannot fail, only be failed." Workers, then, will always pay the price.

#Devtober Day 21 Crude underwater movement and jumping into and out of the water are working. "Crude" being the key word. Movement isn't satisfying and it needs animations. :/ I'm thinking of making acceleration and deceleration slower than on land, but only if it feels right.

#Devtober Day 20 Long day. Tired. 🫠 But we now have water, and respawning works too. And stalactites! #MayGame

#Devtober Day 19 I've written some truly horrific code today, 🫠 all in the name of making sidescrolling navigation feel intuitive. When you want to let players climb ladders And drop down them But also walk along the top And not get caught on wall edges... I feel like it's kinda unavoidable?

The sidescrolling view has gotten a graphical overhaul. The dark background made the block wireframes harder to see, so let's use a light background instead. I think this fits the overworld style better too, with darker areas = impassable areas. #MayGame #ScreenshotSaturday #indiegame

#Devtober Day 18 I updated the puzzle block graphics for a side-view perspective (they were still top-down). The animations too. Also, I don't think I've ever shown the green one before. It's a 4-way block. Unlike the others, you can get it almost anywhere with enough effort. #MayGame #gamedev

#Devtober Day 17 Improving the sidescrolling experience... - Highlight triggerable blocks - Hitting ceiling will stop vertical movement. - Coyote frames; can jump just after walking off edge. - Use rectangle for collision box - Can trigger blocks above you without needing to jump up #gamedev

The collision box one is interesting. For the top-down view, I'm using a capsule shape, 10 pixels with with radius 3. This helps avoid getting caught on things. But for sidescrolling, it's now a 10x6 pixel rectangle. Otherwise the physics of a rounded object walking off an edge just gets weird...

I feel it's important to share this again. The internet is so hostile toward creators nowadays. I've seen people have their work stolen, and no longer feel comfortable sharing their creations. We can do better. Let's be supportive to the people that make this a better place! 💞

#Devtober Day 16 First day working on puzzles in a sidescrolling environment. Happily, these puzzle blocks from the top-down areas have decent puzzle potential in a sidescrolling areas too. Albeit more as building blocks. (The physics need work. I'll need to refine that.) #gamedev #MayGame

#Devtober Day 15 After a week of tying up some loose ends that nonetheless MUST be working for the eventual demo... The top two pages of my todo list now consist entirely of NPCs, abilities, enemies, and other content. All the stuff that majorly affects the game's flow. #gamedev

MicalPixel@micalpixel.bsky.social

I spent the last 2 months overhauling my game's infrastructure. Core systems, etc. Eliminating all the tedious boilerplate stuff. And now... I'm largely done with that. It's time to add the content. Enemies, abilities, puzzles, dungeons, etc. I'm excited but also nervous... #gamedev #MayGame

It's like switching from building the frame of a house to actually painting it and filling it with furniture. And it has to all fit together and also stand out compared to other houses nearby. Welp, no way to go but forward I suppose. 😌

Happy Anniversary to Xenogears 🎂🥳🎉 Released in North America on this day in 1998 for the PlayStation 1, this masterpiece from Square pushed storytelling, philosophy, and music to new heights. It’s still one of the most unforgettable RPGs ever made!

#Devtober Day 14 I wasn't thrilled with the original avoid-drowning animation sequence. This updated one has a slow-mo flailing bounce at first, then a run-in-place windup animation, then high-speed motion lines that move towards safety, and finally a brief panting animation. #MayGame

#Devtober Day 12 Another type of collectible now has its system in place. I think this is the last complicated one. ^^ Why give players a hat when you could instead give them a token for one? The mystery. The suspense. What kind will it be? 😁 #gamedev

Hats are an optional cosmetic collectible in my game. But how do you get them? You go into this one cave and exchange tokens for them, of course. A HATOKEN, specifically. Each token is linked to a specific hat, but you won't know which one until you exchange it. #MayGame #indiegame #cozygame

#Devtober Day 11 I added a hacky solution to "The Hat Problem." May's hair is a separate sprite so it can be swapped out. And it's normally drawn ABOVE her body sprite. This works 99% of the time... Except for animations where she raises her hands. Her arms will appear under her hair. Bleh.

The hacky solution... Is to draw the hair sprite behind the body sprite, but ONLY for certain animations. This...works? I could add a third sprite for arms that's always drawn above the others. But it seems overkill.

I've been hooked on The Witch's Bakery for the past 2 days. 😅 The hand-drawn art is great and there's so much to see and do. If you like Kiki's Delivery Service, and Ratatouille, then you'll almost certainly like their baby, I mean this game, as well! 😁 #indiegame #cozygame

#Devtober Day 10 I wanted to fix respawning (which is canon btw). It should: - Be fast - Look nice - Convey a sense of instability but also order. So here's the result. Using a dissolve shader. You can even affect the trajectory using the joystick. It's kinda addicting. :D #MayGame #gamedev

Respawning should also: - Clearly inform the player when it starts, and ends (via color change from blue) - Look decent even when moving through solid walls or across water And the shader can be applied to subsprites too by checking a box! So glad! Dealing with each individual hats would be a pain.
