Now that Steam Next Fest has started I want to remind everybody to not give games with AI any attention, to help you with this you can download this neat extension that will make it A LOT easier to filter through the slop! github.com/seeeeew/aiwa...

Thank goodness I don't buy on Steam anymore! I stick to GOG and other DRM-free fronts whenever possible. Wish I had an extension for such storefronts, though...

Sadly Steam and itch are currently the only stores with any kind of mandatory AI disclosure. If GOG ever adds something similar, I'd be happy to make a GOG version of the extension too!

Well, I don't think Valve is immune to using it themselves in the future. I think the lesser evil is a store that uses AI for its own storefront and still sells mostly non-AI copies (not licenses) of games. There's also ZOOM Platform and Itch.io for DRM-free games, too!

I like the idea of denormalization this does. Maybe it's about giving a positive incentive to do it the proper way: placeholder art made by people, creative risks, collaborations early in a project, or programmer art as a healthy process for programmers.

Awesome site, gotta bookmark and share that! If any questions about the extension come up while adding it, feel free to contact me. (I made it.)

Nice extension! It works on Android Firefox! My only complaint (if any) is I don't need the second line (and as long as I can click the item to see why it's appearing, maybe it's not necessary?)

I've been using it for a while, and the only downside I can think of is that some devs use genAI disclosure to essentially say "we didn't use any genAI". I admire the spirit, but that's not how you want to use the disclosure, dawg 😭

I also happened to see one dev just go "team members may have also used AI tools to assist with various tasks during development", like dude... Just tell me if you used genAI or not 😭

I read one where the first paragraph was all we used real voices and people etc.. And the last paragraph was where they admitted to using it for art. Hoping people don't read it all the way through

Steam loves AI. Stop treating them like a baby when they clearly just want more money to steal from the videogame industry to do not even make games with.

I dearly hope so because the environment is rapidly growing toxic, both to customers and creators. Like an algae bloom all this AI slop is choking out what little space is left. And now we're also seeing a chilling effect with people afraid to even put out demos in fear of instantly being copied

I like to think Valve has been better about doing the right thing than a lot of other companies, but I have a feeling they're only going to crack down if it negatively affects their income. I don't suppose there's any data to indicate that wading through slop makes people less likely to buy games?

Currently not a lot since it's a very recent phenomenon. But we're already seeing devs hesitant to put out demos or release games until they are done. And I can't imagine having to wade through a literal mountain of slop to find something worth wishlisting is what valve wants the Steam fest to be

Steam has never required AI coding assistance to be disclosed to the consumer. Where this could get iffy is that AI can be used to make code that can make graphics or sound, instead of directly generating it.

It kind of sucks that this flags games like Taiko for having... (gasp) VOCALOID MUSIC! Jokes aside, thanks for the work on this!

What signal does the extension use? Steam has no reliable AI metadata—tag-based filtering will miss undisclosed AI and false-positive procedural content.

What detection method does the extension use? Keyword heuristics will false-positive on any game mentioning "AI" in lore or dev tools.

But what if I find the idea of AI in games interesting, not necessarily games made by AI, but AI in games? I mean, I can see how more sophisticated AI could make NPCs a lot more interesting, just to give one example.

I grabbed this on Librewolf, I have everything enabled for it and it even says "Can always read and change data on this site" however it's grayed out in the list and isn't working. I know very little about browser extensions plz halp

I just tried it with Librewolf 158.0-1 on Linux and it worked fine. Is it giving you any error messages or other info? If you can't get the Firefox version to work, you could also try the userscript version.

Try installing it directly into Steam bsky.app/profile/pmrd...

You can even install it in Steam by right clicking on any link in the Steam app Store page and cliking "open in a new tab" it will open a new windows where you can enter a URL, just enter the chrome store link for the extension: chromewebstore.google.com/detail/ai-wa...

I have a game in the works that won't use AI, and I'm kind of curious: I have an idea in mind where I steal popular AI songs and make them into my own (full covers, no sampling), as they're in the public domain, do you think I'd need to disclose that outside of the in-game album?

probably wouldn't hurt to disclose it, but I still wouldn't touch AI at all in the first place... I think at that point you might as well make something original if you have the musical skills, or collab with other human musicians if you want to cover something

Well I do! The whole thing is a "stick it to em" sorta thing, and will be an advertising thing like "day 1 of stealing AI music", reinforcing that the game itself is anti AI.

I appreciate the idea of wanting to stick it to em, but personally, I think this is "theft with extra steps", unfortunately. Everything AI creates is built off stolen content, so while you aren't using sampling it, it's still just kinda.. extended stolen content.

You're not sticking it to them though. You're just taking & using stuff that already made use of stolen works/effort. Plus, it can lead to attention on the original slop & encourage the person to 'make' even more of it.

You can also make this visible in the Steam client with Millennium using the Extendium plugin

The filter is currently only implemented for search pages, not for the entire store. Could that be the issue?

I see. I just tried it on search and it works. I saw lots of people talking about the extension in the context of AI games on Next Fest, so I thought it would work on the Next Fest page. 😅

Sadly I haven't found the time to implement that yet, but I hope I will soon. I want it to be available everywhere in the store eventually. 😄

Quick open question, does this only work for normal searching, or does this also successfully filter any games shown on the NextFest event page? Is there a specific setting I may be missing to trigger this, or a way to search for games featured in NextFest that's not the main page to let it filter?

How exactly do we get this extension to work on Steam itself now? I've done the new tab thing and have add the extension within the browser tab that loaded. I have even downloaded the crx file that popped up after adding the extension. I don't believe I've misunderstood anything here so far.

Unfortunately, probably the latter, but at least at that point they're breaking Steam's TOS, and if discovered can be reported.

Also heads up: Steam does not enforce its AI disclosure policy, so a game not having the warning does not guarantee the game is free from AI. If something seems off about a game it probably is.

It's mandatory to disclose AI use to Valve. It is not required to disclose AI usage for coding in the customer-facing disclosure, but all other uses are shown to customers. That hasn't changed since they first required the disclosures.

I don't know that they haven't *ever* taken action when a game failed to disclose AI use. I can certainly find examples of undisclosed AI use, but as I click through the Next Fest demos that have capsule art that I have high confidence is AI generated, I'd say at least 2/3's have a disclosure.

There really is a ridiculous amount of AI garbage on Nextfest...just scrolling thumbnails looking for coop games, like half the first page was AI right off the rip.

fr have some self respect. why pay someone selling you a service they had no part in making. I genuinely hate the time we're in. had such a fun run with internet growing up, where small businesses could thrive why did we enter the biggest scam epidemic so fast?

Nice. I hope this extension checks for more than just tags and keywords. I added the artificial intelligence product tag to my game since the main antagonist in the demo is a grock like AI girlfriend that takes over a Mars colony with her human boyfriends remote controlling an army of murder bots.

The extension checks if the developers have added an AI Generated Content Disclosure to the game's store page, so it's not guessing based on tags or keywords.

Is there a way to report to Steam games that do not disclose but still use AI in them? The normal report form in the ribbon on the right does not have an option that would fit.
