GIS and map people: What was a place you explored remotely through maps that still managed to surprise you when you visited IRL? #gischat

The Map Center@mapcenter.com

YES! I think most GIS people have had the experience of becoming intimately familiar with a specific place from maps and satellite images and data. And then. Going there. For the first time. And seeing how it is still both recognizable and strange.

I feel terrible asking this, but my debit card got stolen and I don’t currently have the funds in my account to cover some upcoming payments while I sort the dispute out with the bank. If anyone could help spot me, I would really appreciate that! V: @Ian-Coldwater CA: $iancoldwater PP: @coldwater

Okay so I've built a new Atlas, this time it lets you explore the conversations on Bluesky over the past 7 days graphically. It should update every ~6 hours and help you navigate the information environment that exists on here. I've learned a LOT about what people do here today... atlas.jazco.dev

atlas.jazco.devAtlasA living map of what Bluesky is talking about: the past week's conversations, grouped into topics and regions and rebuilt every six hours.

Unbelievable footage from NOAA’s Hurricane Hunters inside the eye of Category 5 Hurricane Polo. Simply incredible.

I'll be a guest teacher at the Wheeler School next month, too. If you or someone you know is a New England teacher that would like a real live cartographer to come to your school and do some hands-on activities about maps, geography or astronomy, please reach out!

anyone have ideas about how i might hack these into something useful?

pulled some vehicle tracking hardware out of an Amazon van I bought. Anyone know if I can repurpose it, and if so, where's I'd look for info on that? seems to be a Fleet Edge FL44TE and a Voyager2CCU

These are my latest one-of-a-kind raku pieces. No one’s buying right now, and I understand - art isn’t always the priority in difficult times. But I’m still making, and sharing a little beauty feels worthwhile. A like or share might help these pieces find their people. 🙏

An emoji has a coded description that gets read aloud by screen readers. Putting emoji in between text could cause confusion or make content less clear. It's best to put emoji at the end of written content.

did this again this weekend, climbing and lake life, but didn't take a kayak...maybe next year. surprised how much the lake level changes

RT with your home river. The Bear River, about 1000 feet from my house. One of the smaller feather river tributaries, with its headwaters being well below the Sierra crest.
