My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Farewell, Walter Koenig ✨ His portrayal of the ever boyish Pavel Chekov on #StarTrek spanned decades and made him a TV icon, but his menacing Alfred Bester on #Babylon5 showed his range as an actor. Suaimhneas síoraí dó, in éineacht le Judy agus Andrew.

Today we're embracing the autumnal vibes with this beautifully atmospheric work by Charles MacIver Grierson. 🍂 Potato Diggers in the West (1903) does a fantastic job of capturing the late autumn light, setting the painting's primary palette of earthy browns and greens against the intense orange

”Falsehood flies & truth comes limping after it.” Jonathan Swift, Anglo-Irish satirist, Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral Dublin, author of A Tale of a Tub, Gulliver's Travels, died #OTD 1745; champion of liberty, whose Saeva Indignatio inspired Voltaire, Yeats, Joyce, Orwell. Trinity College Dublin

🍎 I’ve always loved this work by Daniel Maclise, the oil painting of which is in a private collection, but was exhibited @crawfordartgallery.bsky.social in 2008-09. (The engraving is likely by James Scott). It depicts Fr. “Mat” Horgan’s barn, which Maclise visited with Thomas Crofton Croker!

All-Hallow's Eve is getting closer! 🦇 This popular print is made after Daniel Maclise's Snap-Apple Night (or All-Hallow's Eve) oil painting, and was inspired by a Halloween party the artist attended in Blarney in 1832. The verse below accompanied it in an exhibition catalogue entry of the time:

I love spotting fingerprints on terracottas, the physical marks of the ancient artisan. A votive terracotta head like this one was mold-made, but the details were added by hand to individualize each piece. Zoom in to see all of the fingerprints on the brow and chin! 🏺 1/ 📸 me

Beauford Delaney, James Baldwin, c. 1945-50. A scintillating portrait of the acclaimed writer, vibrant with joyful color

‘One of Toor’s earliest green night-time scenes, The Bar on East 13th is also his first clearly homoerotic work – his ‘coming out through paint’ as he puts it.’ Encountering the work of Salman Toor was one of my highlights of the Venice Biennale in 2024. Dazzling, hypnotic.

‘The result is what we might call Toor’s high-camp formalism: the use of centuries-old techniques and conceits to instil a sense of melodrama, even grandiosity, in scenes of contemporary queer life.’ David McAllister reviews ‘Salman Toor: Someone Like You’ at the Courtauld

'Dorinda.' (1934) Gerald Brockhurst undertook a closed, intensive method to his drawing, the intense painter-to-sitter encounter in the studio of rigorous observation. It was a path taken by Lucian Freud, Auerbach, Kossoff and Euan Uglow. With thanks to the Philip Mould Gallery.

Seeing the original Pride flag, dyed, stitched and flown by Gilbert Bake et al was a magical moment. This piece of fabric is blazing beacon of hope for so many of us, our gayeaux tapestry, telling our stories and proclaiming our existence. It's in Cork Public Museum at the moment :)

Dazzle camouflage was created during WW1 to protect British ships from German artillery - it works by making it difficult to estimate range of speed and heading. Edward Wadsworth supervised the design of of the camouflage patterns. This is his 'Dazzle Ships in Drydock,' from 1919

In Herbert Badham's 'The Night Bus,' (1943) the interior lights highlight the different figures and their gestures, all still, fixed in the moment. A woman reads a magazine, a man smokes, the conductor chats to a passenger.

It’s time for a cheeky crossover! 🍑 Today is the anniversary of Antonio Canova (1757-1822), the leading Neoclassical sculptor of his generation. The origins of our collection can be traced back to a set of plaster casts of Classical sculpture and three of Canova’s own creations.
