A new Science study shows that bumble bees can position a ball underneath a fake “flower” to reach a reward, suggesting they can exhibit spontaneous problem-solving and challenging the notion that such advanced cognitive abilities are exclusive to large-brained vertebrates. https://scim.ag/4vs08dC

We are very proud of our @uni-saarland.de B.Sc. student Smilla @smillakoy.bsky.social for winning the Euro #Cilia2027 image competition. A well-deserved recognition of her amazing work. We're lucky to have such talent in the lab!

🏆 GRAND PRIZE WINNER 🏆 Congratulations to Smilla-Maria Koy (BSc Student, Mick Lab, Saarland University, Germany) for winning our Image Competition! 🔬 "IMCD3 Spheroid with Cilia" captures primary cilia emerging into the lumen to show cell polarity. #FluorescenceFriday #Cilia #ConfocalMicroscopy

I am hoping that all companies who are selling antibodies will take this very seriously.

The Thermo Fisher situation keeps getting worse. We've now collected 450+ problematic images presented as verification data in TF's antibody catalog. This includes: 🖌️ Dozens more images with duplications or painting 🖨️ Hundreds of blots that all share the same background (behold slideshow below)

Please check this out! Great technical improvement. Congrats Bas and Helge!

New paper out! Left-handed DNA cannot bind to natural, right-handed DNA. This leads to lower background if it is used as a probe in DNA-PAINT. Using Fluorigenic DNA-PAINT with left-handed DNA allows for low background, fast 3D DNA-PAINT! Congrats, Bas! skeetorial: 1/x pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10....

Finally got around to reading this fantastic work on in vitro reconstitution of plasmodium #microtubules, highlighting the importance of lattice interactions. Congrats all! It was a fun read.

Simone Reber@simonereber.bsky.social

In vitro reconstitution is powerful: we can rebuild Plasmodium microtubule architectures from purified components and recapitulate what cells actually do 🤩 Thanks to an incredible team that made this possible 🙌 @carolynmoores1.bsky.social in particular rdcu.be/e7eM2

Another fantastic technology development paper by @davidbreslowlab.bsky.social. Being able to perform microscopy-based CRISPR screens on fixed cells is big. And TZMP1 is a fascinating transition zone proteins. We may be missing many more of these #microproteins. Congrats to all authors!

Ever wanted to do a genome-scale CRISPR screen for a microscopy phenotype? Pooled CRISPR screens are amazing, but hard to combine with imaging... Excited to share our latest work in Dev Cell on a technology platform for imaging screens and applications to primary cilia: www.cell.com/developmenta...

4) iAPEX is more specific than conventional APEX labeling, which is a huge deal for subcellular proteomics of small subdomains. We profiled primary cilia of two different cell types and identify new cilia candidate proteins. Our data confirms heterogeneity in cilia proteomes of different cell types.

2) We can use the iAPEX enzymatic cascade to activate subpopulations of APEX enzymes in subcellular compartments, specifically where they co-localize with DAAO. We can show this for #mitochondria, subdomains of cilia (cilia tips), as well as for proteins that localize to two different compartments.

Amazing work by the Breslow lab. Super excited to finally see this published. Unbiased CRISPRa screening reveals a novel and unexpected cilia disassembly pathway associated with neurological disease (focal cortical dysplasia). Must read for both #cilia and screening technology enthusiasts.

Science doesn’t need to be pretty and go according to plan; it just needs to lead to a discovery. If doesn’t have to be done alone or together with someone else; there just needs to be a discovery. It doesn’t need to happen fast or slow; just as long as there’s a discovery, then everybody is happy.
