If you're concerned about the outcome of the election, tell everyone you know to VOTE! And to tell their friends and family to vote! Pessimism only begets apathy; Keep your chin up dorks, it's praxis. #nzpol

During the brazilian elections we learned one obvious but important tactic to defeat the far right on the Internet and I think everyone should know it: IGNORE THEM! DON'T ENGAGE WITH THEIR CONTENT! DON'T MAKE CONTENT REACTING TO THEM! DON'T HATE QRT! LET THEM ALONE IN THEIR BUBBLE!

For many of our rural TAs, this is an impossible mandate; the areas are too vast and the ratepayers too few. Amalgamation might be a band-aid, but what does that do to the balance sheet of the adjacent metro council?

Local Water Done Well pushed many councils to set up new CCO's to manage their water, which cranks the privatisation ratchet up a notch; If central government wants to intervene, it will be much more expensive to obtain these new entities than it was previously.

It's not explicit policy, but look at the ring-fencing of water rates, the removal of regional councils, and the scrapping of the RMA. Also note that councils were mandated to ensure their water services are sustainable by 2028.

Congratulations to my friends at @balancingmonkeygames.com on the launch of their second title Beyond These Stars. Lovely people, and another product of NZ's incredibly supportive games industry.

I've avoided reading anything about it but I am so excited for PENGUIN COLONY. I went hoarse recommending Umurangi Generation back in 2020 and failed (but valiantly tried) to get that game to win all the awards over its AAA competitors store.steampowered.com/app/3695930/...

Journalists are crowing 'what's new?!' because they have forgotten that there is a second draft of history, and don't seem to recognise that a book like this, is it. This govt has literally forced the TPU into the *school curriculum* in its ideological vandalism, well here's the primary reference.

The new book #DirtyWork by #NickyHager is the story of how Jordan Williams and the Taxpayers' Union orchestrated the use of racism in the 2023 election. Here's my take on what we lost as a result, free to all on my Hopetown substack now simonwilsonhopetown.substack.com/p/dirty-work...

Hard to overstate how chilling this stuff is as a parent.

Business financial data day - always a favourite. What's going on? TLDR: Profits pick-up, wages don't. I'll get into the glorious detail, but concepts first... 'NZ Businesses' buy stuff, pay wages, sell stuff, and make profits. Per capita figures for the above in the chart, simple? Right... [🧵 1/n]

What an absolute banger. Costed, straightforward policy with clear benefits for pretty much everyone suffering under this chud government. A better Aotearoa is possible! #nzpol

Everyone in Aotearoa should have access to affordable kai. The Green Party has a plan to take on the supermarket duopoly, bring down grocery prices, and make sure everyone can access good food. Affordable Food For All of Us: www.greens.org.nz/affordable_f...

I knew this would be bad, but it's awful. Malpractice even. I'll limit my criticism to 9 posts. The Herald have added together the gross debt of NZ public & private sectors and called this debt 'we collectively owe the world'. Pure unadulterated nonsense. Literally untrue. [🧵1/n]

The nomination was so touching because we were fan-submitted — but I didn't think we had a chance of taking it home given the quality of the other finalists. What an unbelievable honor! I'm reeling!

Occasionally you get a review that, in and of itself, justifies all the work you put into a project. This is one of those! Huge mihi, Mitch.

Incredible wrap of some amazing indie games you might have missed - including ours, Toroa: Skycall! 💙 Thank you SO much, Mitch, for your sweet words. Getting to hear how much our game resonates with people is something we'll never get used to. Mauri ora!

Rates capping is possibly the most harmful piece of legislation this government will pass in terms of massive austerity and assets sales across the country. And it has gone more or less unreported because of our spectacular national apathy — & antipathy — towards local government. #nzpol

They're not blocking Discord, Roblox, or any of the big AI chatbots: preventing online harm isn't really the aim here, is it? #nzpol

Very disappointed to see the govt proposing a ban on under-16s using social media. While we agree there is work to be done, a ban is the wrong approach and interferes with young people's rights to communicate with family, each other, and the wider world. www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...

Without being too uncharitable (hopefully), I think this illustrates a big difference between Labour and the Greens. Labour believes the way we've been managing the economy for the past 40 years is fundamentally sound and salvageable. The Greens do not.

I love that everybody longingly wishes Zohran could be mayor of their city or in the White House, but trust me, there are many more Zohran’s out there in every community all over the US. So stop daydreaming and start organizing to defeat billionaire backed candidates in elections.

This is great work by Rachel. The rates cap + enforced rates relief combo will just flat-out prevent councils from enforcing environmental protections. Removing this one bit of the Planning bill is one of the most significant bits of environmental protection we can do. #nzpol

Rachel Brooking MP for Dunedin@rachelbrooking.bsky.social

We have said we would repeal the regulatory relief in RMA replacement. I have published amendment papers that would do this. And other changes consistent with our differing view.
