My most recent book centers on the fact that two ancestors--one born in Ireland--were declared "colored" by the state of VA. Had they stayed in Virginia, my father couldn't have married my mother. Record keeping reinforced and sometimes simply invented permanent racial identities.

Ossoff spitting fire

Ossoff: "Maybe you saw that Donald Trump was in Dalton yesterday, oblivious to the collapse of his presidency. A crowd smaller than this one enduring two hours of senile babbling while the price of oil hit its 5 month high"

As theatrical antagonists, White House reporters serve the president’s interests more than the public’s. Donald Trump’s attack on the press corps is an opening to do away with antiquated, corrupting and infantilising rituals bit.ly/4hC4pWR Illustration: David Simonds

Most liberal politicians spend all their time telling the voters why they can’t have nice things. Mamdani makes actually nice things happen. Unlike other mayors, he doesn’t hate his voters

Climate Week is here in New York City, and our work has deep roots. 18,261 trees planted this year. The most in a decade.

Susan Collins is always horrified by the predictable results of her own vote, which means Mainers who genuinely care about Susan Collins should elect Troy Jackson as he won’t vote for things that wind up upsetting Susan Collins, unlike Susan Collins

Bobby Kogan@bbkogan.bsky.social

I think something to consider here is that Collins voted to confirm Russ Vought as OMB Director despite the fact that he said a billion times that he thought Trump had a constitutional right to illegally impound funds, and now she’s doing shocked Pikachu reactions.

This was settled by Annette Gordon-Reed in 1997.

Scientists have new proof that Thomas Jefferson had children with his enslaved chambermaid Sally Hemings—and that their bloodline endures across the country. www.newyorker.com/news/the-led...

Jefferson and Hemmings: historians always welcome new evidence, but Annette Gordon-Reed settled this question over two decades ago, through impeccable research and careful analysis. Jefferson was the father.

This is great work. Collins has to go.

Exclusive: In late 2024, FBI agents were looking at Sen. Susan Collins’ role in a massive illegal bribery scheme alleged by a former federal contractor. Then Trump gutted the FBI and DOJ, leaving no one to carry on the investigation – it’s dead. 🧵

Trump banning some media outlets is bad, but the White House Press Corps is mostly bullshit, asking superficial questions and serving as a megaphone for Trumps inanities. And holding a chummy, clubby annual dinner with the guy. It's just performative pseudo journalism

This whole thing is made up. Remember when their were consequences for doing stuff like this?

Ron Filipkowski@ronfilipkowski.bsky.social

This is an absolutely insane lie. His whole story about this today is a lie. I know he's lied about his non-role in 9/11 rescue/recovery before, but never this level of detail. Just total fantasy. Utterly disgraceful. Next he will claim he won the Medal of Honor. www.threads.com/share/_1TKI7...

I guess now we will have to rename "New York" as "New America" and people can live in "New America, New America, America," and right across the river will be "America City" also in a different "New America," but in that one people will go the "the America shore"

The oft-maligned sewer socialists of early 20th-century Milwaukee were in fact strategic champions of working-class interests, combining a pragmatic legislative strategy with efforts to organize workers outside the state.

jacobin.comThe Sewer Socialists Were Pragmatic Class WarriorsMilwaukee’s “sewer socialists” have often been dismissed as tepid reformers. In fact, they were pragmatic champions of a world beyond capitalism who were laser-focused on organizing the working class.

I don't know enough to judge how unusual this is after 9 continuous months at sea, but it looks really bad

These two striking images of the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) capture the undeniable material toll of the Navy's grueling optempo. Severe rust, obvious maintenance deficits and physical strain inflicted by marathon deployments.

1. The Washington press corps is Donald Trump's true constituency. He speaks for them, brings attention to them, enlarges their standing, enriches their bosses, even when, or especially when, he attacks them.

This strikes me--a white guy, admittedly--as an accurate depiction the things Harper claimed

Here that? Jeffries saying your anger, anxiety, and fear about healthcare costs is not legitimate, while vowing to preserve the system. The "path forward?" Body cams for doctors, maybe. 1/

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

WELKER: As Democratic leader in the House, would you vote for or against Medicare for All? JEFFRIES: It's not legislation that I currently am co-sponsoring or that I support, but I support the notion we've got to find a path forward to fix our broken healthcare system

I understand the power of the minority is limited, but for F's sake, don't promise that if you get power you'll find some vague "path forward" that preserves a system where your health crisis is a a profit center.

That's what taxes are, man. That's the definition of taxes. "You are subsidizing things you might never use" man shut the fuck up. My taxes currently subsidize like oil company exec private jets, you think I'm upset at low-income people eating inexpensive bananas?

USA TODAY Opinion@usatodayopinion.usatoday.com

Opinion: Mamdani's idea may sound appealing, but it's NYC taxpayers who will take the hit, subsidizing discounts they may never even use.

Of course nobody in the press questioned Trump or suggested the deal was not what he said it.

I will never feel bad for them. Ever. I stand by what I said back in the beginning. Those firms should forever be ashamed of their conduct. They brought an eternal stain onto the reputation of the profession.

Musk is a dangerous maniac, now encouraging his followers to kill a journalist who dared to ask him questions.

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social

Elon Musk, owner of X, has called the editor of the Economist "a traitor to the West, plain and simple" after her recent interview with him. He now argues that "anyone who opposes remigration is a traitor" Musk has been socialising violence since Aug25: "fight or die, that's what it comes down to"

If you read the article, you'll see that the attacker also stabbed an Asian man before stabbing the Jewish man. Why is the focus on criticism of Israel. Note: Stabbing is of course deplorable and unacceptable.

There is a lot to say about the Nolan Odyssey movie. But one point that I think has not been emphasized enough is: this is a film about living in LA, as Nolan, my erstwhile British compatriot and age mate, has done for years. I gather it’s a strange place.

The father south you live in the US, the less difference it makes, while Northern states will experience more extreme differences. But the key is where you are in relation to the meridian line of you standard time zone. Look, for example, at Detroit: the latest sunrise would be 9AM

In the 19th century, schools, businesses and local government changed their hour of operation to suit available daylight, a perfectly sensible solution that takes into account where you reside on the face of the earth
