As I wrote in the American Scholar: when people experience a beautiful piece of music or art, a specific area of the brain becomes active. Now scientists have found that the same area of the brain lights up when mathematicians study beautiful equations. theamericanscholar.org/hey-good-loo...

My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet

And remember, all of this is happening amid the AI buildout. AI, which is not a coherent set of products and services, but rather a commercial and political project, can be understood as a full-spectrum class-war offensive. An offensive waged by one industry, which put their guy Vance in the WH.

Students made their first minicomics in my intro making course - mostly standard format but this student, a first time maker(!), did something so off the charts I’m still reeling from it! & he made like 12 of them for his classmates! A paper engineering feat of flipbookery as well as killer drawing!

and then on Friday I overheard someone on TV talking about Jeffrey Archer so I asked Celeste is he dead or is that just wishful thinking and she said no he’s written a new book and I said Oh God that’s all we need and then this evening she came up to me and said hey guess what

The @us.theguardian.com just named BOORMAN AND THE DEVIL as one of the 20 best making-of documentaries ever made!! So cool! Available now on Apple/Amazon/Google/Fandango and Letterboxd!

My sister and I had a cat called Celeste. The neighbour’s cat used to visit us sometimes and for some reason I started calling her Florence. It just seemed like a good cat name. Years later I met the woman I now share my life with. Her name is Celeste and her eldest daughter is Florence.

Briiiiiiaaaaannnnnssss!!@spocksbrian.worstpossible.world

The name Florence popped into my head when i was walking up first avenue with her the night she found me. I didn't dare say it out loud if i was going to end up losing her and after almost a full month, no better name came along

One of the first "outrageous" claims I saw as Jason Arday's media hounding unfolded was that he ran 30 marathons in 35 days! Wow! What a thing to claim! And the newspapers all suggested there was no evidence he actually did it. Well, they clearly didn't look very hard 🙄 🧵 1/26

For instance, the 1972 edition of the French dictionary Petit Robert didn’t contain the exorbitantly taboo word “enculer” - meaning to sodomise, reaching the same pitch of vulgarity as “cunt” in English - but the 1987 edition did.

I used to love reading dictionaries, with which our household was amply provided, and quickly learned that two different editions of the same dictionary may not contain the same swearwords, which is a whole education in itself.

The 1983 edition of the Collins Dictionary of the English Language was an interesting one. My father spotted a printing error in it (my copy is in storage and I can’t remember what it was), and he wrote to them and told them.

I'll summarize this: Mamdani asked NYers to keep air conditioning at 78 degrees. A wave criticism hit online. A MSNBC broadcast pointed out the US Department of Energy recommends that 78 degree figure. Immediately after, the US Department of Energy deleted 6,000 web pages related to energy saving.
