Once again, this was how the Economist characterized the American economy on Election Day in 2024. We had a country on the brink of stunning success, but the Republicans knee-capped it with trade wars and real wars of their own choosing.

Mike Johnson: "We reminded voters of the disastrous effects of the years under Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, what we inherited when we took this over last January. We had a country on the brink of ruin." 🙃

🧵 I’ll do a little game theory here… if you’ll indulge me… for the sake of understanding how this could play out over the next few months. I’m going to game two different courses of action: 1. Beshear appoints a replacement. 2. Beshear call for a special election. 3. Beshear does *nothing*. +

Update: Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear is calling on Sen. Mitch McConnell to “directly and verbally address the people of Kentucky and provide proof of your capacity to serve, or resign.” Thank you, Governor Beshear!

It was no surprise that there were no cameras present in Trump's meeting today with Zelensky, OR his meeting with Netanyahu. He's on camera now sitting in the audience at the Graham ceremony, and he's struggling mightily to stay awake. Time for another recalibration.

To be clear, whenever fascist republican scum like Karoline Leavitt mention President Obama’s middle name Hussein, it’s not to show respect, it’s for white supremacy purposes and to somehow paint him as complicit with terrorists. Their white hoods are always on display.

Thanks to Rep. Ted Lieu (my Rep) for a much-needed reality check today in the face of DOJ's impotence: “Donald Trump IS in the Epstein files many thousands of times. There ARE disturbing allegations of Donald Trump r*ping children and even threatening to kill children.”

One more quick thread, and then I'm getting out of here to walk my dog in the sun. I think a lot about the authoritarian personality. I won't start going on about that because this thread would last forever, but I just want to say one thing about it.

Every couple of weeks we get a different description of the apparently awful stench coming off our necrotic president and I think it's high time the media nail down exactly what kind of rotten meat covered in women's perfume he actually smells like.

Trump's thugs are going hog wild and tossing gas around in one of the busiest commercial districts in Minneapolis, just a mile or so from where I live. Complete insanity. (vid via Ford Fischer on X)

Trump just announced that South Africa is communist and that Miami is full of South Africans. Trump is maybe two weeks from taking his pants off on stage.

Cry harder. Trump will never be on the ballot again. And Trump can reopen the Republican shutdown this week by stopping the Republican assault on healthcare and hungry kids. #bluewave

If you’re wondering: has People magazine’s coverage of Trump’s second presidency been pissing him off, per our sources: yes, the literal president has noticed and he’s not pleased, particularly the framing and repeated coverage of his health.

Why is Trump asking for grand jury testimony? 1. Because he knows it’s unlikely to be released and then he can blame the judge 2. Because that testimony is restricted to charges against Epstein and Maxwell and is unlikely to name clients 3. Because it generates delay and confusion.

Today we celebrate the promise of America: freedom, diversity, and justice for all. While these ideals may be under a daily assault by the Trump administration, it is all the more important that stand up for democracy — for everyone. I wish everyone a safe and joyful Fourth of July. 🇺🇸

Once again, either the entirety of the world’s journalism and reporting, and international intelligence agencies are fake, deceitful, crazy, unhinged and immoral OR it’s Trump and the members his cabinet and administration who are fake, deceitful, crazy, unhinged and immoral.

Lying and fabricating to maintain his grandiose idealized self as omnipotent, infallible, and inerrant. Smearing and discrediting every single legitimate source of accountability and exposure. “Fake news” is projection. He’s fake. This is the MO of narcissistic psychopathy.

Remarkable. MSNC: "I want to reiterate this has been 100% peaceful." Seconds later, LA County sheriffs start firing on the crowd. Yet again, "law enforcement" deliberately escalated.

It is 100% carrying water for the opposition to participate in this collective delusion that Dems for some reason need to answer for every teen who throws a rock rather than hold the Trump admin accountable for intentionally creating chaos and breaking the law to stoke violence. They are in charge.

ICE is a much greater threat to this country than illegal immigrants. The current administration ia by far the greatest threat this country faces. The problem is not st our borders. It is in the White House.

Let’s be very clear: Los Angeles is the perfect place for this to play out for the Trumpists. The Trumpists hate California and hate Los Angeles and a vast amount of their base feels the same — even the Trumpists here, who wallow in hating the place they live. /1

The administration gets closer to using the military to crush civilian dissent. Expect deaths, disappearances, and lawless detentions.

If you were a halfway decent human being and you knew an innocent man was rotting in foreign prison—likely suffering nightmarish conditions—because your administration screwed up and send him there, you’d do something about it immediately instead of shitposting lies all day.

Remember this: There are more Republicans turning on Trump/Musk and Republican leadership now than there were a week ago. A week ago, there were more than the week before. This will continue. It's the only thing that can happen. It can't not happen.

LA County got some rain to wash off the ash (and toxins in it). It came down in bursts rather than light and steady, which is better for getting "washed." Now we left with the spots in which rain cannot reach (but ash could in the blustery wind).

If there's one thing I hate on social media it is the I-told-you-so game. But I can't help but note to all those who are celebrating these revelations about the super-empowered rich or oligarchs that people have been writing about them and warning about their influence for literally centuries.

I don't think we need to have any more discussions about "norms" and "precedent." What we need to do is prepare to sue the shit out of this administration in a zillion places in an attempt to sabotage it until we can flip Congress in 2026.

Among the political challenges we face, one of the biggest is understanding so many of our friends and neighbors do not feel participating in our political process is worth their time or attention. Apathy and ignorance are part of it. But I believe millions believe it just won't make a difference.

Numbers don’t lie Approximately 50 million people did not register to vote 240 million did register to vote 90 million did not vote 150 million did vote That equals 140, million people that just don’t care.
