I'm still figuring out the best way to articulate this. There's something different about growing up in a culture that has its roots in oral history, and passing knowledge directly from person to person. When elders tell you a story, you internalise it in a way that sinks through to your soul.

That liminal state where on a logical level I'd say, of course I don't believe in fairies, in the way of "Clap your hands for Tinkerbell." But at the same time I wouldn't purposely piss off fairies, just in case. And when yer old man tells you a story, you listen and remember just in case.

Words have power; speaking things aloud gives them weight. Particularly in a culture where story and song used to be the primary means of passing on information. And I may carry the weight lightly, but I still carry it.

I grew up in Aotearoa NZ but my dad was born and raised in Ireland. Most of his friends were Irish, many of the people he worked with were Irish, we went to the Irish Society club gatherings, we played Irish music, went to Catholic school with kids whose parents were also Irish expats.

When my paternal grandmother died, dad told me he saw a bean sidhe over our house. I believed him, not on a literal level but on the gut level where I knew he felt a deep longing for home and connection. And that's hard to describe: the in-between where I don't believe but I don't disbelieve either.

I am a former incarcerated firefighter. I served in a California fire camp from 2009 to 2012. Misinformation is afire on the internet, so here are facts about the prison firefighter program, all in one place. A thread.

A great write-up on the incarcerated firefighter program in California & the folks in prison helping out with the fires in LA. Appreciate The Marshall Project for reaching out to me. All too often, folks write about fire camps without talking to people who’ve been to fire camps. Not the case here.

Anyone on #Classics Bluesky want to chat about Euripides and Greek drama? I graduated in 2007 so I'm not up to date with current scholarship, but I'm in the Nancy Sorlin Rabinowitz,Anxiety Veiled school of thought.

It's not that we become impervious to triggers. It's that we come to trust our commitment to responding to them w/ skill & commitment to not turn on ourselves like our bullies & abusers conditioned us to. And both parts of that equation, skill & commitment, very much matter.

A lot of men are gonna be mad that their US history classes were too busy to cover The Hatpin Panic. The Hatpin Panic was a period in the early 1900's where we had to pass laws limiting women's hatpins to <9" because men started to get too fucking free with touching and were getting shanked for it.

Ever since Reagan, increasing the debt by giving tax breaks to the rich has been a premeditated policy to justify cutting welfare & public services. Neoliberal playbook 101.
