This story is amazing

Maine's Black Lawyer@lutherevers.bsky.social

For Rahaeli and @elsieyork.bsky.social, who both asked: My professor was working as an assistant county attorney very early in his career when he got assigned a nuisance abatement case. The owner of property in an unincorporated part of the county was keeping exotic animals without a permit.

Let’s be clear here, when scientists say mistakes were made at the start of the pandemic, we DO NOT mean that we did too much. We mean not socially distancing quickly enough, not making tests widely available, and not acknowledging COVID is airborne and distributing N95 masks to everyone.

At our municipal grocery stores, New Yorkers will get a 30% discount on eggs, milk, chicken, produce and other everyday essentials. In the wealthiest city in the richest country in the world, no one should have to wonder how they’ll afford the food they need to feed themselves or their families.

I found 6 women who said they were “moderates” & did not align with any political party. I asked them if they would be willing to take a quiz on whether quotes about reproduction came from the 19th century or now. To convince them to spend time talking to me, I told them I was doing it for a class.

The US first amendment protects a lot of stuff I find vile, but it also protects a lot of stuff that I find useful and beneficial but a lot of other people think is vile. Given the well-established fact that anti-speech laws are used against marginalized people most, it's a bargain I'll gladly take.

Like many people, I used to be a straight woman who played ukulele on the Internet. Now I'm a trans man and my voice has dropped and it's been emotionally complicated... and we're bringing that whole energy out this November. If you remember the Doubleclicks... please help us spread the word!

When I speak, toads fall from my mouth. There was a fairy dressed as some kind of fucking royalty. I got cursed for insufficient deference. As far as I can tell, my toads are not any of the 500-ish known species. If you have a degree in biology and want to cowrite a paper on new toads, hit me up.

Why do ACs not list their external dimensions and internal dimensions separately? Why only list totals? (my bedroom window has a maximum of 10" of clearance between the window and a metal gate, so this is critical for me in figuring out whether an AC, sight-unseen, would even work in my space)

In particular, after a Medea unit proved too small (we have a 12,000 btu unit and should have checked, we looked at hisense's interesting low profile unit, and...there is literally no information on how much of the unit is in your window/in your apartment/on the outside? Just none?

Don't know who I heard it from first, but all SF has at least 3 dates: When it was written When it was set When it's actually about Sometimes some of these dates are the same date, but there's often some divergence. But, many tech-bros don't have anywhere this nuanced a take on the genre.

Elizabeth Lopatto@lopatto.bsky.social

frankly I have come to believe techies are illiterate. science fiction isn't about the future, stupid. it's about the current political situation but set in space so no one gets mad. duh!

Maybe this opening is a good fit for someone I'm connected to here. (@mnemex.bsky.social? @jl8e.bsky.social? @jonlennox.bsky.social?)

Please spread the word! In addition to becoming an important part of the MESA project, the person in this role would have opportunities to collaborate on scientific software across CCA, which has a vibrant, interactive community of scientists and code developers.

I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.

Not trying to be obnoxious, just trying to be encouraging for the people who need it: RSS Feeds still exist. There are still forums and thriving article comment threads. There's nothing stopping people from blogging about their passions. I'm surprised at the wide range of ages of people...

For ppl who aren't aware: Old temperate forests are insanely rare nowadays and extremely important ecosystems lost forever once cut. They're not just "old trees" but intricate networks of trees, fungi and all kinds of living creatures. You CANNOT replant this!! Once it's gone it's lost FOREVER!!!

just became aware of this--the regime wants to clear-cut massive chunks of Oregon's old growth forests in the name of timber production. you have until March 23rd to comment. i know we have endless fucking things to scream at politicians about--this is an important one too.

People like to paint the Big Sites as criminally indifferent to the harms they cause (or worse, deliberately engaging in them) when every bit of "proof" that's been produced was PART OF AN ATTEMPT AT HARM REDUCTION.

The "Facebook knew their product was causing body image issues in teen girls and did it deliberately" narrative is taking the ACTUAL RESEARCH Facebook did entirely out of context! They commissioned that internal research to SEE HOW THEY COULD STOP IT HAPPENING.

We did a quiet Thanksgiving day in. Dinner was a turkey leg, which I stuck into a a dutch oven with carrots, mushrooms, garlic, spices, consome powder (2 tbsp), half a challah torn into shreds, slow cooked for a few hours, then baked for 15 minutes. Not quite what I'd intended, but...turkey stew!

Donald Trump deleted this from the government website. Let's be clear: there's funding available to cover SNAP benefits next month. Trump is stopping SNAP benefits because he wants to. He is forcing mommas and babies to go hungry.

In "entirely trivial but it's what I care about", CNN writes: "[FBI AD] said officials will move from trying to identify the suspect, who killed conservative political activist Charlie Kirk, to building a prosecution case." ...no. If he killed Kirk, what is he a suspect for again?

Lodestar Award for YA fiction: (no, not a Hugo but has its own cachet, maybe we can add more Lodestars like one for MG or Children's): Shiene Lende #worldcon #hugoawards My battery is down to 15%, hope it lasts! Speech I think started in a Native language, and includes oppression and resilliance.

Best Novella: The Tusks of Extinction! #worldcon #hugoawards (i'm sure there's a banger of an Ursula recorded speech we'll never hear) Author thanks Sheila Williams--that's two in a row! Short and sweet, can't complain. And yes, we're still doing the song. #worldcon #hugoawards

Best Novellette: (hey Seanan, who is presenting, and rocking a sparkly corenet): The Four Sisters Overlooking the Sea! #worldcon #hugoawards Struck at how author's dress also visibly sparkled. Speech talked about when husband watched the kids while she was writing (18 years ago!)
