How much of the world’s proven coal, oil and gas (i.e. already found, pays to extract at today’s prices) can still be burned for a 66% chance of holding 2 °C? About 30%. The other 70%, 2,040 billion tonnes of CO₂, are stranded assets. Burn it all and CO₂ alone means roughly 2.7 °C Purple = added

Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

For decades, oil and gas companies have polluted the public conversation about climate action with toxic misinformation. But an equally sinister barrier to action is the unwillingness for any nation to leave their natural resources unextracted and unexploited. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Florian Aigner@florianaigner.at

Interviewer: can you explain this gap in your CV? Paleontologist: You mean the ghost lineage? Look fossilization is rare and we don’t have strata preserving the relevant time period. We can infer it was very impressive and doing lots of things that would make one hirable though…

Quick (rethorical) question: where do we currently stand on banning private jets in the EU? ✈️ How is this still a thing? Nobody needs* a private air plane... (*I guess excluding transport for medical and other emergencies)

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

In 2011, one chick held the record for most plastic ever found in the species: 276 pieces, 64g. We thought that was as bad as it could get. We were wrong. The record fell in 2023. Fell again in 2024. Then in 2025: 894 pieces in a single chick. (Photo: worst chicks in 2010, 2015, 2021, 2025)

Imagine if the media took the words of climate scientists as seriously as it does that rando from Anthropic… Air pollution and climate change from fossil fuel use are literally killing millions of people every year, but sure, let’s focus on the idiocy that “AI is going to kill everyone in 10”.

I‘m far from an AI doomer, but it is amazing how many serious voices — on LinkedIn, no less! — are sharing stories about how AI slop is quickly becoming one of the top problems they see in academic writing and research “AI will 10x our research!” doesn’t seem to be surviving encounters with reality
