Games are made by people and game studios are made of people but game studios are also made of institutional knowledge, continuity, practices, standards, technology, resources, and IP. And those things do mean something, and it is a loss when they're discarded.

I remember when Tim Sweeney held court on the idea that all forms of written musical notation are bad and should be entirely replaced by guitar hero style vertical scrolling. This confirmed many things about Tim Sweeney, the kindest of which being that he knows absolutely fuck-all about music.

Future of music tech looks like cheap blank-slate digital boxes for people to swap firmware as they please and high-end analogue stuff that can't be decompiled/ripped. Premium digital is gonna be dead. This might be why Teenage Engineering are talking about leaving synth making behind.

Today google turned on even more genAI features for businesses who pay for google suites, which means a lot more things to turn off. It automatically turned on reading all your email and docs for generative AI learning so that probably already happened. Turn it off in your admin panel here:

Old man dance music moan of the day: young producers, stop calling your bootleg remixes “edits”. They’re remixes. An edit primarily rearranges existing material. Adding a familiar vocal to a tune of your own is not an edit, it’s a remix.

I'm pretty sure that grotesque human brutality predates them but sure, lazily tarnish videogames with that well-worn brush.

It’s a mark of the corruption of our whole way of thinking about the world that trying to meet a planetary emergency is routinely described as “ideological”, while continuing to accelerate it is presented as “pragmatic” and “economic”.

Grumpy today because everyone now seems to think that ambience, or atmospheric sound effects for RPG games just means putting a drone synth from ableton through a reverb.. The lost art of foley huh :(

Managed to hunt down two photos of the kitbashed model built by Jim Bowers as reference for the original WipEout game, sometime around 1993 or 1994. You can see the logos on it are harvested from other kits- Toyota and Buick logos, USAF roundels, and more that I'm sure someone else could ID

In case you missed it earlier, I've got a new book out! Sort of! It was new four months ago! It is perfectly normal not to know that you've got a book out until four months later!

Mixed feelings about my ATOMFALL novel. Delighted that it's out, less so that it was published four months ago and I only found out today. That aside, I think I did good work with this and, considering its less than barnstorming release, It's got nice reviews. ATOMFALL: THE SECRETS OF WINDSCALE

Ezra Klein asked Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang about AI making kids worse at math and reading. Huang’s reply: “Does it matter?” Then he said he doesn’t know his own address or phone number. “We’re going to lose some fine intellectual dexterity.” www.nytimes.com/2026/09/23/o...

Elektron has updated their statement on mods and hacks. Here’s clarification from the company. They explicitly say they have no issue with the Machinedrum X (MDX) firmware for example, but also cite a rise in AI-assisted hacking. Following this one:

Just as meta glasses have been collectively renamed as something that actually describes what they do, can we all call SUVs 'child-killing machines'?

Being hit by an SUV or ute increases the chances of pedestrian or cyclist fatality by 44% or 82% for children

Hello. They are going to try to fuck with your vote, and we are NOT going to let them. Last week I pinged my friend Dana Chisnell, who knows how elections work, and said "Hey, let’s make it hard for them to fuck with us.” Today, we are very proud to announce the HOW TO VOTE zine. howtovote.tips

It's finally happened: the improved quality of machine transcription and the greater ability to extract value from unlabelled data means "your tech is eavesdropping on you for marketing purposes" has crossed from "false conspiracy theory" to "true and concerning" www.theverge.com/tech/991190/...

13 years?! 'kinell. Single-input control was a super-interesting design limitation to work with. I'd love to go back to it and evolve more systems around that.

I looked it up and Toast Time released on Sep 5th 2013, making this the 13th anniversary of the game. Definitely a good omen right? @ashleygwinnell.bsky.social
