One of the joys of seeing the Cabs final Sheffield bow was seeing how much in meant to some - not just Steel City residents, but those who had travelled long distances to be there. Their music still sounds like the future - and the absolute beating heart of the post-induatrial city that forged them.

They connect so many different eras in Sheffield and inspired so many, all while doing it their way. Even those whose music is very different (see Richard Hawley, who I spotted at one point) will tell you how important the Cabs were and remain.

The world’s first football club, born on this day in 1857. Fun fact: their rivalry with Hallam FC (who still play at the same ground, Sandygate) is also the world’s oldest football derby. Originally known as the “rules derby” (I think) as they played by Sheffield rules

Brian Groom@groomb.bsky.social

Sheffield FC, recognised by Fifa as the world's oldest football club still playing, was founded on this day 1857. The club is now based in Dronfield, Derbyshire, and competes in the United Counties League Premier Division North (pic is Sheffield FC 1876).

Big Phil Clement currently giving his usual pre-match #ncfc press conference. This quote caught my eye, re: Kenny McLean setting the tempo for the team “for years”. This is part of the problem - we have nobody else that can do that as it stands. Poor planning from Knapper and co

Some chase by Sri Lanka in this ODI - I’ve bot seen much of it, but in the few overs I have seen there has been some dreadful bowling by England (Curran particularly poor). Also, lack of death bowling - I mean, why part time spinners in the last 10?

What a thoroughly insane ODI innings from Harry Brook - first England men’s player to hit a double century and the quickest of all time, off just 114 balls (!). Just the 429 to England in total 😳

In recent weeks I’ve spent a fair amount of time at Knowle West Media Centre here in Bristol, working with young people on a collective radio show they will record as live in December. Seeing the teenagers show their creativity and passion for music while gaining more confidence is very rewarding

The project is being run by the community interest and education arm of the station I broadcast on, Noods. They are doing great work and I love being able to pass on some of my knowledge and experience while encouraging the young people. They’re a great bunch.

Astonishingly, early next year it will be 30 years since I broadcast my first radio show - a regular late night ambient and chill out show called Midnight in Europe. My love of radio has not dimmed in that time - in many ways my passion has increased over the years.

Watched this last night and, yes, it is even worse than expected. It not only shows the far-right X-brain fash meme theories parroted by Reform members and officials behind the scenes, but also how there’s a deliberate policy to not state the extreme policies they would enact in power

Undercover: "A year in Reform" Warning: Vile people. Vile language. Exposé of Nigel Farage's Reform Party, it's Tory defectors, and it's acolytes. (Underscores the ugliness of the BBC in relentlessly platforming Reform throughout the Brexit campaign and beyond) #UKPol

It should be essential viewing for anyone’s friends and relatives who are becoming Farage-curious. These are the people, rather than existing members and the hardcore, who need to see it. If they did, you would hope that they would steer clear next time they enter a polling booth

That a fifth or a quarter of the populace (assuming polling means anything thus far out from a general election) would vote for them is frightening - but how many would put their X by a Reform candidate if they watched this? This is why it needs sharing far and wide

It shows clear links to the balaclava-clad dinghy botherers, former Royal Navy high-ups (hello Chris Parry) being extremely far-right (less of a surprise - I have met former British military officers with similar views, sadly) and volunteers saying that these days being racist is fine. Repulsive

Some astonishing gaslighting today from the Fagash Fuhrer. Apparently reform racists caught out by ITV all came from the Conservatives and therefore it is not Fagash’s fault. Nothing to do with the dog whistle foghorn he carries around and uses daily, then, or Reform’s racist policies.

The Rugby League World Cup starts today and there’s currently a fantastic men’s game going on between Australia and New Zealand. Sadly if you’re in the UK you likely won’t see or hear much about it because it is behind a paywall on Premier Sports - a channel subscribed to by about 4 people.

Old man dance music moan of the day: young producers, stop calling your bootleg remixes “edits”. They’re remixes. An edit primarily rearranges existing material. Adding a familiar vocal to a tune of your own is not an edit, it’s a remix.

Joe is of course correct - I had a massive brain fart when writing the Disco piece and when talking about other remix albums forgot about this one. Dave Stewart in particular was very interested in remix culture - famously Dave Angel’s first record sampled them and he intervened to guarantee release

Love this. Love 'Disco', it likewise meant a lot to me as a kid. You missed out one key 80s remix album though Matt - TBF it's often overlooked... but it's the real deal, very focused: it's all Jellybean and François K... God I love the 'Mics.

Also, one of the first - maybe first ever - remixes by the Orb was of Stewart’s ‘Lily Was Here’. That was 89 I think so very early in their story and before they became big

Vehicle dumper (yes, the saga continues) slept in the office of his weird falling down business last night, presumably to be here to move vehicles for the road works today (which he hasn’t yet). He did have to move one of his trailers earlier so my housemate sarcastically yelled “so it does move!”

More developments in the long running battle with our local vehicle dumper. Met a previously unknown neighbour from the next street earlier. Without prompting he went into a rant about “this twat who parks all these cars and vans round here” while pointing at said cretin’s business premises.

His vitriol was impressive but the thing that struck me is that quite a lot of people are clearly pissed off but have no idea what to do about it. That could explain why the driver side window of one of his cars was smashed in last week (though equally it could have been random/attempted theft)

If correct, and other outlets now reported, the punishment needs to be massive. Huge fines pointless - FA needs to show that breaking the rules and buying trophies through sleight of hand and crooked behaviour has consequences other than a hit to the bank balance

🚨 EXCLUSIVE: Manchester City found guilty on virtually all charges relating to breaches of Premier League financial regulations. #MCFC expected to appeal against verdict issued by independent commission. Sanctions undecided, process ongoing @theathleticfc.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/athletic/704...

And yes, I do feel sorry for Man City fans, who pre Oil Dollar had to put up with their team bobbing up and down the divisions and playing second fiddle to Salford’s second set of Red Devils (the ailing local Rugby League club were the first, fact fans)

Just look at the sheer volume of coppers needed to protect their cop shop from the balaclava-clad fash agitators rallying around the clown. Until such time as there is a crackdown / effort to show these meatheads their behaviour is unacceptable, they will be emboldened and it will get worse

Anti-migrant agitator Daniel Thomas has pleaded not guilty to criminal damage after he was accused of slashing a boat in the Channel with an emergency responder on board. He also pleaded not guilty to not giving police the PIN to his phone.

The first PSBs album I ever bought (went and bought Please three days later). Dubbed them both on to a C90: Disco makes me think of icy dark evenings, and the Latin Rascals' mix of Opportunities really annoyed my parents - like it was punk. Enjoyed this piece by @sellbydave.bsky.social a great deal.

Pet Shop Boys first remix album, Disco, turns 40 next month. That gave me an excuse to revisit and re-contextualise it, musing on the evolution of the remix album and the relationship between dance and pop in the 80s. jointhefuture.net/2026/09/23/r...

Musical noise for your ears incoming - the latest #JoinTheFuture show on Noods Radio airs today (Weds 23rd) at 15:00 BST. This one includes UK techno legend Dave Angel talking about his first album in 15 years, plus lots of ace music old and new

Conversation on the radio about Sky’s new “what would happen behind closed doors if the uk was attacked” show, The Wargame. Clearly it cannot be very accurate because Michael Gove plays the role of Prime Minister

The one time I went to Louder Than Words I really enjoyed it, but the lack of discussion of the growing number of books about dance music culture - of which there are now loads - IMHO has been an issue for some time. Maybe the time is right for an equivalent festival for electronic music literature

Cordoba has been so off it this season. He is far too casual on the ball and gets caught out by attackers a lot. Was very good under PC last season but pretty much useless since returning from the World Cup (and changing his haircut, which I am happy to blame for his downturn in form). #ncfc
