This news is important because all the fucks out there actively attempting to wreck the world want you to think that the work is hopeless and just mitigating the worst case scenario. It's not. Fucking keep going.

We now have rigorous pooled data showing that even without active restoration efforts, cleared rainforest can rebound to 75% of their former species composition and 90% of species diversity within just thirty years. #goodnews

Amazing writing from a brave man, who wanted nothing from society when he came out except to be treated exactly the same way he had been for the first 34 years of his life. RIP.

Rest in peace to Jason Collins, an unthinkably brave person and incredible leader for the LGBT community. Over a decade later and his coming out column is still an astonishing piece of writing. Wish the sport had caught up more and that he could have lived to see it.

Will Arnett was on Conan and told a story about how Conan dealt with the death of his parents by accusing Jason Bateman of killing them. It’s so funny.

The original definition of "factoid" was "a piece of information that becomes accepted as a fact even though it is not actually true" but it is most commonly used to refer to a piece of trivial information. Thus the currently accepted definition of factoid is, in itself, a factoid.

Why does everyone keep calling it “The Epstein Ballroom?” Please stop repeating “The Epstein Ballroom” because it is not called “The Epstein Ballroom!” Don’t tell the news that it’s called “The Epstein Ballroom” and please don’t repost this!!!!!

The Trump administration is obviously making a lot of stupid financial decisions these days, but the collaboration between the IRS and ICE is one that is going to going to cost the US billions in tax revenue for many years to come. Why is this a problem? (1/x)

The reality is that countless migrants who come to the US to contribute to the workforce attempt to navigate our complicated and onerous immigration system and often fall through the cracks. But now the IRS is punishing those who made good faith efforts to pay taxes.

Now, the nearly $100B in tax revenue we collected annually will dry up permanently. No undocumented immigrant would ever willingly pay taxes knowing that the current or future administration could use this information to hunt them down and deport them.

Moreover, it will have a profound chilling effect on future undocumented workers who now know that if they trying to do the right thing any pay their income tax they are exposing themselves to future deportation. No undocumented worker in their right mind will ever pay taxes again.

So this raises the philosophical question of "Well, should they have been working here in the first place?" I will not debate that here, except to say that countless industries have relied on, and/or exploited undocumented labor for over 100 years, and will continue to do so.

Likewise, undocumented immigrants will often pay at a higher rate because they are barred from getting certain tax credits – like the Child Tax Credit or Earned Income Tax Credit. So unlike our billionaire overlords, undocumented immigrants on average pay a HIGHER tax rate!

So why is this IRS/ICE collaboration idiotic? Well, the IRS is now punishing the millions of undocumented employees nationwide who tried to do the right thing by paying taxes on income that they were technically not supposed to be paid. This will have an immediate effect of cutting off tax revenue

First some data. Many undocumented immigrants pay taxes. Billions of dollars in taxes! According to the non-partisan Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, in 2022 undocumented immigrants paid: -$96.7 billion in federal, state and local taxes -An average of $8,889 per undocumented immigrant

More than a third of these tax dollars go towards benefits that undocumented immigrants don't have access to. Undocumented immigrants paid $25.7 billion in Social Security taxes, $6.4 billion to Medicare , and $1.8 billion to unemployment insurance in 2022, but cannot receive any of these!

You are up to date.
