We talked about how archaeogenetics can be integrated with historical and archaeological sources to better understand mobility in the Roman Mediterranean and beyond. For an overview of the paper we discussed see this great write-up from @archaeologymag.bsky.social archaeology.org/issues/septe...

This isn’t just an academic question. This type of biological determinism shapes real-world decisions, including legal and institutional ones. When DNA is privileged over other ways of knowing, it can undermine community self-determination and reinforce narrow, essentialist ideas of identity.

In The Tie That Binds Us?, we call for critical reflection on who conducts archaeogenomic research, whose interests it serves, and how different knowledge systems can inform our understandings of kinship. The goal: to re-centre communities in defining human connections, past and present.

Shares DNA is not the same as kinship. Treating genetic relatedness as the primary measure of kim and belonging can sideline and community-defined understandings of kinship, reinforce dominant Western frameworks, and obscure the process of making (rather than being) kin.

Wooden tools crafted by Neanderthals at hunting sites have been found before. For the first time, there's now evidence from a domestic context too. “We know what was happening in the kitchen, in the sleeping areas,” says @iphes-cerca.bsky.social's M. Gema Chacón. “It’s like a snapshot.” @science.org

Neanderthals were talented hunters AND home decorators. Evidence from a Spanish rock shelter includes new tool types and evidence for windbreaks and other domestic arrangements. “Now we can start to imagine the spaces they were living in,” says archaeologist @annemiekemilks.bsky.social. @science.org
