Just from a money perspective the one donor that this would most appeal to dwarfs every other donor combined so I guess it kind of makes sense as a game theory thing

Boo!-per Lund@cooperlund.online

Who do I give to to get this in front of as many Michigan voters as possible?

So I don't know any details but seen some articles about how the sausage is made and there isn't a machine that picks a random American meeting whatever criteria they're looking for, they keep very manual lists of people they ran into in real life or while doing another story, or friends of friends

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

have they ever fucked up in the opposite direction, quoting some guy they say is a rando but is actually a dem operative? why is it always republicans?

Any time I've seen anything concrete about where a source came from when they needed a "typical" person of some criteria, it ends up someone they ran into before or they asked all their friends to ask people they know or they put out a call on social media, it's all six degrees of separation stuff

Like I think I saw one where someone ran into a Young Republican club president or whatever at a trump rally who was willing to talk and provide contact info because of course he would, that's his whole deal, and then they just asked him to join a focus group later, because they had his contact info

Kind of a tangent but my hot take is nobody wants to be yelled at. Even the people who are like "I love triggering people, your hatred energizes me," are just regular people who want positive attention, can only get negative, and are sour grapesing themselves that they actually prefer it, yum yum

Colin@colin-fraser.net

Deep down the people who work there just want to be held in high esteem. They want everyone to say “thank you for changing the world with your wonderful products” and they don’t want to be yelled at.

Like this is obviously Elon Musk who just flips between explicitly saying that it's so great all the losers hate him and saying he's upset people say mean things about him, but I think a lot of trollish people are less obviously transparent about it and slightly more committed to the facade

A lot of people have explained it's incorrect because the world is interconnected and all but I don't think he's even thinking that far, I think it's just projection where he thinks everyone else views news as a spectator sport looking for spicy take material, because he does

Dan Mauler 🎃@meelar.bsky.social

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

The sky was interlaced and fizzling like I had set the channel to 3 when the VCR was actually hooked up to channel 4. "Must be a Monday," I said as I plugged my cortical uplink into the cyber orifice

This is just about how he would legally have the power to control a majority share in the company after he dies, not about how he will practically do it. Zombie? Ghost? Uploaded brain? Nothing. Useless

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

A recent securities filing spotlighted what triggered Mark Zuckerberg’s months-long power battle with board directors at Meta — a fight that sparked not-so-veiled threats from Zuckerberg and led board members to contemplate quitting.

Yeah it seems like the vast majority of attempts to build AI businesses are centered around "which futuristic movie can I tell my customers this is just like" and not like, what can this real world thing do and what does it really work on, or not work on, in real life

ryan cooper@ryanlcooper.com

also kind of funny that it going YOLO with chatbots and image generators in 2022 appears to be extremely stupid, business-wise. that kind of shit is like two-thirds of why people hate AI, and it turns out to be unnecessary

Also in addition to people deliberately gaming the system for various reasons, "skin in the game" can only increase motivation which doesn't increase accuracy for people who don't have any special access to information or insight, it just encourages them to believe harder in their ungrounded wishes

This is also why I'm nervous about people crowing that Republicans are freaking out about the election so that means we're going to win, like I'm glad they are losing sleep but they're also stupid so maybe their internal polls and data are also shoddy, although again it's still great they feel bad

The whole article is even worse, it's about how they can't seem to get women as hooked on AI products as men are, and the "solution" as always, for every stupid product women aren't buying, must be to dumb it down to something women can understand www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/s...

nytimes.comCan Marissa Mayer, Yahoo’s Former CEO, Help Fix A.I.’s Gender Problem?Marissa Mayer made her name as a pioneer at Google, then as chief executive at Yahoo. Now Mayer is entering the crowded marketplace for A.I. assistants — and hoping to draw in more women.
David Gura@davidgura.bsky.social

cool, cool

You will never ever ever get any investors if your pitch is "we're going to bring more women into this currently male dominated segment by making a version of the product that is more advanced and higher quality". They cannot conceive of marketing to women as anything but going the other direction

Also maybe worth bringing up again that a lot of these AI marketing stories aren't necessarily real and reflecting how dumb the person telling it is, but reflecting how dumb they expect their target customer to be. For Marissa Mayer I guess it's a toss up for me though

Different fields do require some different skills but sometimes also people do bad at one kind of field and then switch to another "where that stupid skill won't be important" but it turns out the part they were bad at is also required for the new field and actually everything

a lot of people have encountered the overconfident stem nerd, the guy who programs and so everything else must be easy from the outside it does look like "i'm smart at code, so therefore i can do anything", but i promise you that they're like this with code too

That sucks that the grift where a stupid person puts on glasses and pretends to be a wizard at computers and formulas only works in conservative circles, that would be a fun niche

BeshearStan@beshearstan.bsky.social

Guys, is it good news when the biggest GOP shill on Twitter is not showing their predictions because of the impending blue wave?

I don't know why but I always want to say Cheesesteak Factory which would be so much better. Not that I don't like cheesecake but you can get that anywhere, it's so hard to get a good cheesesteak on the west coast

I'm not in any position to say what normal Americans think but just as a random data point, when I was growing up, my family (Chinese, immigrant parents) thought Denny's was fancy and Olive Garden was extremely fancy

W.E.D.em Boyz@leftistwonk.bsky.social

I hate this noble savage shit so much. Americans do not think Cheesecake Factory is a nice and fancy restaurant. Just because people eat there because they can afford it does not mean they think it's nice. People aren't stupid. They know what a fancy restaurant is.

Needless to say it took quite a lot of acclimatization to cliche prom night restaurants and the diverse Berkeley food scene before I was able to comprehend French Laundry

My favorite genre of article is the one that's like "you can stop stressing out! Experts say it's ok not to do [thing it never even occurred to me to do]". I don't have to wash my roof every month, once every two months is fine? Whew

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

You don't need to check on your 401(k) daily — and doing so may backfire. “Frequent monitoring can increase anxiety and tempt investors to react to normal market movements rather than stay focused on their goals,” one financial adviser said.

I think it's a better history lesson if it's left in ruins kind of like when the guy sees how shitty the statue looks now in the Ozymandias poem. Thousand year Reich my ass you'll say

𝕯𝖆𝖓🍂🎃🕸️@arepublic86.bsky.social

Hitler's Eagles Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) deliberately destroyed today. Part of me likes history being preserved, but another part of me doesn't give a shit, it was a monument to one of history's most evil men. Thoughts?

I really don't think there's any new skill to "prompt engineering", people often complain the computer won't do what they want and I suggest some common sense thing I would say to a person I don't trust to follow directions good, and it works. This is an old skill called giving directions to idiots

Christina Holland@mortalwombat.info

Kind of a dirty secret I found having to use it at work for code is that all that stuff out there where people go on about the special magic way they invented to word your prompts are bullshit. The most useful thing is the same clear communication as you need to use for humans. No shortcuts there

View full thread

Do people not listen to you because you "tell it like it is" and "don't kiss ass" or could it also be partly because you explain things starting from the end, bring up names you never introduced, go on long tangents about irrelevant parts and spend two words on the important part or skip it entirely

It drives me crazy that all these business books and courses about communication say you need to analyze everyone's psychology then use the right strategy for their type. I just explain everything and then tell people to tell me which parts they didn't need and I won't do it next time. They like it!

The other thing you realize is a lot of people's only communication dial is more polite to more rude, so their idea of "giving directions to idiots" is to be more condescending and rude which feels good I guess, but if you actually want things done you want to assume nothing and give all the details

Also a lot of people who think of communication only being adjustable from more polite to more rude blame the entirety of their bad people skills on not being polite enough, which they can frame as a virtue, when they also aren't clear or organized or don't provide context, and never work on that

This has got nothing to do with what he's saying which probably isn't important but he looks like one of the aliens in Star Trek Insurrection that was stretching their faces all the time because they were away from their anti aging planet. That was maybe creepier than the ear centipedes

I'm pretty sure you CAN get an AI generated comic to not have that signature AI cartoon look, just by changing the text of your prompt to push for another look (haven't tried it myself, not really interested enough) but nobody who wants to make one ever seems to bother

tim sweeney's brain melting aside i still can't believe anyone posts these hideous-looking AI comics thinking they look good. these people are not ensouled

From the Page Six article. Wow what a piece of work pagesix.com/2026/10/23/s...

Britt McHenry is no longer in her role as a press advisor for Trump’s Department of State following a viral video that showed her throwing a drink at a Wizards game, FOS reports She had just joined the admin last month

Star Trek V, the one with Yosemite and God, had a really well-acted scene or two and a good potential theme about how a lot of zealots who are smugly convinced they are selflessly serving a greater cause are just worshipping themselves with a God disguise on

I think the three very washed up and jaded ambassadors could have had what seemed like really interesting backstories developed, which you get a hint of when the Klingon one finds his mojo again at the end

Ok this account is giving this same reply to every post that mentions the movie, clearly without reading what it replies to, and I'm mystified. It's got a normal-ish follower/following ratio and reposts resist stuff. If it's being paid for, who would pay for this clumsy of an Oscar campaign

That's kind of weird to talk about sexual abuse like it's an annoying passing fad that distracts from the real problem, uh... honor

Peter@notalawyer.bsky.social

the vivek ad has crossed an ethical line imperceptible to the human eye

I think they should do a commercial where a guy is about to tell his kids a bedtime story and then his boss calls on the phone and is like "I need that report NOW, I'm meeting with the VP tomorrow" and the guy pushes an AI button and it says "third quartprer report sent!" and tells his kid a story

*being transformed into a beautiful constellation of stars after begging the gods to save me from my pursuers* So... not that I don't appreciate this but I had like plans

I mean I know it doesn't matter and he'll just say whatever without thinking or caring about the actual subject as long as he gets attention but my problem isn't that you can't do that or it's insulting, it's that you want to name a thing New [thing it's inside of]? The state replaces America?

Dan Diamond@ddiamond.bsky.social

Trump says that New Mexico should "immediately" change its name to "New America." State leaders have panned Trump's weeks-long focus on the name change. A GOP candidate in a close race for Congress is trying to distance himself from Trump's idea, too.

America is indefensible so we're retreating to the former state of New Mexico and re-entrenching there while ceding all other territory to other countries? Ok I guess that's an interesting story premise if nothing else

This is shocking and out of character for someone who starts reddit threads with glowing third-person reviews they had ChatGPT write about them

Lordbeef@lordbeef.bsky.social

and I can do my banking on this app???

Playing armchair psychologist but I think when they describe what should be important parts of the story as "I don't remember most of it" and "said something like, that's my family" I think they're not just hiding it from you, they really store these in their own brain as a kind of censored fog

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

The other category of coverage is *extremely* implausible first-person accounts from estranged parents. According to this woman, her son cut her off after she was mildly rude to his fiance's family a single time. There's no way this is the entire story. www.goodhousekeeping.com/relationship...
