I was so proud watching Ms Rahman testify. She is a smart, composed person with autism!

Christopher Webb@cwebbonline.com

Remember her name: Aliya Rahman Her testimony is everything and it deserves to be heard, by everyone. Decide for yourself. It’s powerful. It’s gut-wrenching. And no one should have to survive what she did. ICE MUST GO‼️

I just learned Androids have this option too. Useful information and counts towards learning something new each day. Stay curious!

NEW: The FBI has been unable to access a Washington Post reporter’s seized iPhone because it was in Lockdown Mode, a sometimes overlooked feature that makes iPhones broadly more secure, according to recently filed court records.

Today on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we honor the memory of the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust, and remember those who survived and those who risked their lives to save others. Let us work to make sure we root out hatred so we can truly say #NeverAgain.

Join my conversation with Misha Collins tomorrow, Wed. Jan. 28 at 12:30 PM ET – we'll be talking about Minnesota, Ukraine, and defending democracy.

Go through this thread. Remember when Trump said he was going to use American cities as training grounds for military? He's doing it in MN right now.

I’ve been in Minneapolis the last few days reporting on the ICE raids happening across the city. This morning federal agents shot and killed a man, identified by the AP as Alex Pretti. This marks the third shooting by federal agents since Operation Metro Surge started in Minnesota last month.

mrsda.bsky.social reposted

The lawsuit was filed after the BCA said it was blocked from accessing the shooting scene on Saturday to collect evidence, despite having a search warrant giving them authority to do so. A hearing on that lawsuit is set for Monday afternoon in federal court.

Chris Murphy: "This is really scary because what Bovino essentially told you is that if you just happen to be present when they are undertaking an operation, if you pull out your phone to record it, the use of force against you is justified. That is not true, it's not what the law says."

Filming ICE is an act of journalism. Cell phone footage is vital source material for reporters who can’t be everywhere at once. Shooting, killing and other targeting of those documenting news is an attack on press freedom and all else that's good in the world.

Pam Bondi just sent a letter to Minnesota officials saying ICE will leave if the state turns over its voter database to Trump. Guess what? This has never been about safety or immigration. It’s a pretext for Trump to take over elections in swing states.

Now is the time!

Andrew Weinstein@andrewjweinstein.com

Authoritarianism doesn’t announce itself. It arrives wrapped in “security,” “order,” and “law enforcement.” Minneapolis is being used as a proving ground. If we don’t stop this now, we may not get another chance.

Trump and Vance have already lost. They thought Americans would embrace their policy of sending masked ICE agents to terrorize communities across the US. Exactly the opposite happened. Americans are standing up and saying NO. ICE is now at 63% disapproval and only 36% approval.

The first thing Virginia Spanberger did after being sworn in as Governor of Virginia was repeal Youngkin’s executive order requiring state and local law enforcement to cooperate with ICE. This is the kind of leadership Democratic governors nationwide should be emulating.

It’s like ICE stealing that kid’s phone and selling it. No responsibility, no law, just greedy violence. But on a massive scale. As though McKremlin consultants were explaining how to do it.

An uninformed population voted against their best interests. The GOP fears voters with critical thinking skills.

This is what a community being occupied by a paramilitary secret police looks like.

Andrew Weinstein@andrewjweinstein.com

A federal agent killed a U.S. citizen in a state that never asked for federal involvement — and now the federal government is blocking that state from investigating the killing. That isn’t federalism. That isn’t public safety. That is occupation.

If the United States Constitution doesn’t protect you from a federal agent shooting you in the face for the “crime” of turning your car around, it doesn’t exist. ICE has become a paramilitary force with zero oversight and a Secretary in Kristi Noem who encourages the chaos. ENOUGH.

JFC. I mean. I don't know. I don't have the words for this today. This is not good. Trump is. Or good for our country and our future. The people he surrounds himself with aren't good for humanity. The GOP is not good for our country. But they sure are good for the other dictators.

This could be any one of us. We are not sliding into authoritarianism. We are there. ICE is not Gestapo like - they are the illegal lawless paramilitary force creating terror in our communities.

You and your wife drop your 6-year-old off at school. You just moved here. You see ICE terrorizing your new neighbors. You film them, as is your legal right. Your wife complies with orders. She is then shot in the head. You still have to pick up your child later today. This could be you.

This hits so hard. I am numb and scared and heartbroken.

Austin Kocher, PhD@austinkocher.com

Millions of Americans watched a middle-aged US citizen get shot in the face and killed by an ICE officer today. That's a level of national trauma that deserves a more respectful response from this administration than falsely claiming she's a domestic terrorist. We have lost our moral compass.

The Trump admin has fused the war on terror with the war on drugs to create a framework for justifying its own acts everywhere from Chicago to Caracas. Remember the helicopter raid on a Chicago apartment building? A key rationale was to go after the Venezuelan TdA.* Same with Caracas raid.

Nicolás Maduro is an illegitimate ruler who oppressed the people of Venezuela. But President Trump’s unilateral decision to attempt a regime change in Venezuela is shortsighted and drags the U.S. into a reckless conflict that could destabilize the entire region.

The story was always already about an impoverished unmarried couple facing a pitiless bureaucracy, having a baby in a barn, and then having to hide from a tyrant. The baby grew up to say that the poor were blessed and the neighbor is he who shows mercy. You can’t hide from the politics of all that.

This year, statues of tall men clad in all black with masks drawn up to hide their faces are disrupting the serenity of a Charlotte church's Nativity scene. The figures are depicted approaching the Holy Family and the Wise Men with handcuffs as if preparing to make an arrest.
