the loss of knowledge in this industry is just so scary. there is no future if we donโ€™t figure this shit out

Is it too outlandish to suggest that the closure of Bioware (and others) and the cancellation of a new Sims game are the direct consequences of selling EA to a hostile, anti-queer, authoritarian police state using private equity from US-Conservative politicians? Who could've seen this coming ๐Ÿซ

In 2016, we published potentially the largest single feature to ever appear in Game Informer magazine with a full oral history of the legendary studio, BioWare. We've made that feature available online following reports of the studio's impending closure. gameinformer.com/feature/2026...

please stop replying to game devs saying things like "well look on the bright side those laid off devs can start their own indie studios now" because eventually one of us is going to snap and "WITH WHAT FUCKING MONEY" would be a shitty last thing to hear before you die

I literally don't have words for the news of EA closing Bioware. Unconscionable, incompetent, soulless decision-making. May everyone involved in these decision suffer Renegade interrupts for the rest of their lives.

Your games hook is "why would someone want to play this?", not (by default) its USP It's the thing that in a 6-second trailer makes people go "oooh I want to know more". If you can't articulate that, then you're going to struggle to find what makes the game interesting to the average person

doctober@docseuss.bsky.social

and you get this when you talk to publishers still. "What's your USP? What's your unique mechanic?" man, I'm telling you, as a person who's worked at a very high level consulting on projects and being very good at knowing what sells: players do not care about features like that

You CANNOT tell me that there's 20+ years between these two people. They both look to be in their twenties, maybe early thirties. Best I can come up with after hearing Anca lament the age difference is him being 18 and her 38, which still feels like a stretch? #BloodOfTheDawnwalker

i've had other programmers tell /me/ "yeah i trust you so i won't bother trying to understand this, ship it" so i am, shall we say, pretty skeptical that turning the entire profession into oops all code review is going to lead to quality outcomes

Yeah i agree, it's so strange to make a fuss about it As if a small fraction of players making and installing the most predictable mod for a game is emblematic of how the timer was received Every game has some form of Godmode mod on Nexus! It's doesn't mean anything

Note to all the AI-using game devs who get caught and go "Oh, that was just a placeholder!" No, THIS is what placeholder assets look like!

I love finding such remnants of humanity in video games ๐Ÿ˜ #TheBloodOfDawnwalker

I'm sorry, but I have to ask: Why does a Polish studio decide to release their game at midnight our time? Fun theatrics aside, it being vampire-themed and having day/night mechanic, that must be a logistical nightmare for certain jobs. A lot of time-sensitive work starts at launch...

Wouldn't QA still need a headstart on incoming bugs to get that inevitable day-one-patch ready as soon as possible? I've stayed up late/got up early for important marketing beats & releases before myself, but you always only get a skeleton crew at that point. Anyone with AAA experience know more?

Like I'm genuinely wondering here. I get that it's a very indie thing to immediately monitor comments and engage in order to keep the momentum and not lose people to a perceived lack of support. Presumably once you're "big enough" you have more of a grace period to respond, be selective even.

That game dev teams are homogenously in agreement on the game's design. Every team I've been on has had a ton of debate and conflict on every single aspect of a game's design. "Did the devs just not notice X!?" yeah, half of us got in a real nasty knife fight with the other half. I lost an ear lobe.

Thereโ€™s not much that sets me off, but woe to whoever argues a default is sensible, or argues an American stroopwafel is of good quality

I see some concerns raised about Godot's policy on contributions using AI. TL;DR: Godot isn't vibe-coded. As a whole, the Godot foundation and maintainers are fairly critical of AI usage, and don't make nor accept vibe-coded contributions. Godot doesn't include AI features nor intends to add any.
