I just told another PhD student about paper management software (Zotero specifically). I look forward to checking in with him in a week to see if he has 100 or 200 unread papers saved then...

Voter guide is up! (plus an interview I know will be watching later!)

Big John@dcbigjohn.bsky.social

Last week I sat down with @antigravitymag.bsky.social editors in chief Dan Fox and Marisa Clogher to talk about the history of the magazine, what makes them so important to our community and their annual voters guide, which is absolutely a must read for New Orleanians youtu.be/GGyzUacKEJc?...

This is homophobia AND journalistic, or at least headline malpractice "He didn’t specify which study he read, but the idea that color can affect a person’s mood, behavior or physiology isn’t far-fetched, at least according to Alaina Bruce, a licensed interior designer at Ritter Maher Architects."

Big John@dcbigjohn.bsky.social

lol no there is no science to it. It’s called homophobia.

Every time someone says "we all know immigration is broken," to me I ask them how and what do we do about it? Their answers are often about as as concise and convincing as the AI are conscious and will end the world people.

Raffi Melkonian@rmfifthcircuit.bsky.social

I know I'm a broken record on this, but one part of what is going on is that people have literally no idea what the US immigration system actually is; effectively, that there are no pathways into the country legally for someone who wants to wait in line.

I want someone to ask him, while they are standing side by side, what their names are and which one is which. There is zero chance he gets that right.

It's not that it turns out we live in a simulation, that we are all simulations, self-aware and thinking and feeling though we might be. It's not even that the simulation is shutting down. It's that it's shutting down because all the AI data centers we built use too much data. It's too stupid.

This is exactly the point. OpenAI says they released 100s of proofs but do not have the experts or care to actually show that is true. Instead they take it as a PR win and leave mathematicians to sort out the real from the bullshit.

I emailed the registrar of voters asking why I was moved to inactive. I am attaching the email exchange to this. I feel like we definitely need an explanation from the secretary of state office for what led to this error. What were they doing trying to do to cause this?

Courtney Price@courtneycprice.bsky.social

If you live in Louisiana, go check your voter registration. Even if you already checked. This morning mine was fine. Just now I was showing someone how to check and it had changed me to inactive. So they are changing people to inactive as recently as this afternoon.

Well that's a horrifying stat that I didn't know...

What is the Greek word for death wish?

This just describes how a large portion of New Orleans operates

Daniel Knowles@dlknowles.bsky.social

Some unintended consequences I suspect the rise of AI agents will create: 1. Restaurants that only take reservations by hand written letter, or more likely, don't take them at all. 2. Gigs where you can only buy tickets in person. 3. Businesses that operate without websites.

There are a lot of bad austerity measures governments try. Defunding low barrier shelters is pretty high up there as one of the top bad ideas.

Verite News@veritenews.org

The shelter is the only New Orleans shelter that boards pets and does not require sobriety tests and identification. https://ow.ly/EFBR50ZReI6

I try to follow the framework: nuance is more helpful if you have the same goals or assumptions in mind (coopetition/ I really hate that word but it is what it is) and stronger more direct arguments are more effective when you don't agree on the problem or desired outcome (competition).

Colette Delawalla, PhD@cdelawalla.bsky.social

This is exactly it...and it's the Left's kryptonite. This is ESPECIALLY true of scientists who have been taught to think in the grey zone! I know it is uncomfortable, but we all need to fight that urge. Trump is bad. His team is bad. Everything they do is bad. THERE IS NO BABY IN THE BATHWATER.

It's like a parody, but it's deadly serious; the Commerce Department (which includes Census, NOAA, and others) has outright deleted "don't alter or suppress scientific findings for political reasons" from its scientific integrity rules. Seriously.

SCOOP: After the Census Bureau issued a highly unusual report tied to a President Trump-aligned think tank, the bureau’s parent agency, the Commerce Department, cut language banning political interference from its scientific integrity policy, @npr.org has learned www.npr.org/2026/08/31/n...

This 100%. When I was just out of grad school at a think tank there were humanities, social science, and physical science researchers. Many of the younger ones still had this weird tribalism I saw in grad school. The more senior ones knew why the think tank hired all three types to co-mingle.

John Timmer@jtimmer.bsky.social

(This completely ignores how the humanities can help scientists understand the many very human aspects of the scientific process as it's actually engaged in, something that far too few scientists take the time to appreciate.)

Rhetorically speaking, it benefits GenAI companies for this obfuscating generic terminology. The gun lobby does the same thing with words like "assault rifle" and "automatic weapon"--terms that have general purpose use but no domain-specific reference.

I get why this feels tempting for the Mayor in a city that needs money right now but this would be an absolutely terrible choice and we need to push back hard to make sure she understands this is a non-starter. #nolasky

I'm always amused by the way humans fetishize "walking upright," "tool use," and "language" as the iconic features of a superior species. And of course we ignore or downplay the obvious signs of all three in every other species. "They only walk upright SOMETIMES. Not like a true upright walker."
