I will never forgive Zohran for giving so many lame lib politicians the idea that they should post cheeky videos chatting about what they’re doing. The form without content is incredibly grating. Have one good idea before you try to be an influencer.

This isn’t my first rodeo. It’s my second rodeo, but I’m just now realizing that two rodeos are still not enough to be good at rodeo.

I listened to the episode of @thedigradio.bsky.social with @chactivist.bsky.social about the crisis of organized labor. I have never before heard a podcast where I vehemently agreed with some parts and vehemently disagreed with other parts.

Brooks seemed to want to make the argument that labor needs to take more swing and organize more and also that we should drop everything and go all in on Amazon. I'm open to that, but it would require the rest of labor rallying around the Teamsters and UFCW to do that.

If those unions aren't ready to plan and staff and execute a serious Amazon campaign, what does the rest of labor do about that? Meanwhile, UNITE HERE does a fine job organizing hotel workers and should keep doing that. There are loads of nonunion hospitals and organizing those is good.

What I vehemently disagreed with Brooks about was the business at the beginning about the crisis of organized labor. Yes sure labor is institutionally risk-averse and should be bold, but I CAN NOT STAND discussions of "what labor should do" that are not sectorally and geographically specific.

And I don't think it's helpful to pose the crisis as a math problem. Yes density is declining & unions don't organize fast enough to keep up with economic trends. But rushing to a bunch of fast wins doesn't move the needle. Big hard fights that engage a lot of people does, and those can take longer.

A friendly amendment to what Brooks said is that one of the questions the shape the method is what the boss's weaknesses are. There are some employers who are very vulnerable to strikes but don't care about press and others that are very vulnerable to bad press and don't care about strikes.

If you have a tough employer who can be put into a crisis but a strike action, like the UAW standup strikes, do that for sure. Other employers can endure localized strikes but don't like bad press, so you need more community work and don't need to be quite as rigorous about the internal structures.

Brooks is completely right that the structure-based methods she taught and wrote about are designed for the most hostile terrain possible--when there's a hard boss fight and the workers are not in motion. When the terrain is more favorable, the methods can and should change.

Jane also didn't like people treating her teachings like a la carte options, and picking out pieces without the whole thing. So I've encountered people who thought they studied her work who wanted to do open bargaining but had no other strategy at all.

The part I agreed with was the discussion of (my late friend) Jane McAlevey's organizing methods and momentum organizing. I encourage staff at my union to read Jane's book "No Shortcuts" alongside the key momentum book, "This is an Uprising," by @markengler.bsky.social and Paul Engler.

I had done separate live podcasts with both Jane and Paul, and tried to convince Jane to let me do a roundtable show with both together. She didn't want to.

Why you should only give to @movementvoter.bsky.social .

Democrats should really feature these creeps their extensive ties to this administration.

"Weekend at Bernie's" may be the most invoked pop culture reference shorthand to describe something (ie "they're dragging Trump's carcass around in a real Weekend at Bernie's situation") relative to how few people actually saw it. So many more people cite it than saw it. Are there other examples?

The moment when Nat of Bay Area Discovery Museum @seiu1021.bsky.social bargaining team got on the radio to announce to that they just got a Tentative Agreement on a 1st union contract after 31 bargaining sessions and are calling off the strike scheduled to start tomorrow morning.

The bargaining team held out til the very end to win on crucial questions of union power, and organized 100% of their co-workers to be ready to walk out over it. Welcome to 1021! Big Purp Has Your Back.

San Francisco voters get the chance to pass Prop I this election, which will dedicate $ to social housing. Of course, our Boy King Mayor doesn’t like it because it upsets developers. The sf building trades unio s put out a mailer with some gross arguments, carrying water for the Mayor. #YesonI

"Neverending flow of money with no accountability..." as opposed to the famously accountable market rate developers? How much accountability is there for how the City spends money on police? What are we even talking about?

If the building trades unions think it will work somehow for their members for them to palpate the Mayor's taint, they're wrong but I guess they can give it a shot. They just discredit themselves by retreading garbage arguments like this. I can't take them seriously on other matters either.

Drawing the distinction between "nonprofit clients" and "everyday San Franciscans" is a racist dog whistle. It implies that poor people are not ALSO San Franciscans. I guess the Building Trades think the only legitimate housing is by capitalists for capitalists.

"Doesn't require a single unit to be built." Perhaps, but is that bad? If the money is used to buy existing buildings to make them permanently affordable, that is good for increasing access to affordable housing. The money would actually go further & cover more units this way than new construction.

A lot of these shows were good but fell off. Battlestar Gallactica, Homeland, Ozark, dragged on longer than they had story to tell IMO. Also, no Killing Eve?

Just a bizarre top end of the list. Parks and Rec at #50, 30 Rock as the best comedy of the 21st century at #8? Fleabag at #5? Game of Thrones at #6? Girls at #13? White Lotus at #21? Black Mirror at #26? And I loved Succession, but #4?
