Last year, I was struggling with what felt like an impossible task. My son was turning 16 and I had to sing: "Happy birthday..." I like cracking a hard problem but I felt overwhelmed by the range of potential names my son could have. I asked Claude and it suggested "Timmy." I thought it was perfect.

I have created a fortress of solitude and vinyl! (And a heater from Costco. (Still need another curtain on the left where the leaves come in…)

What do you think is the percentage of sentences in that article that have never been written before?

Hi! I want you to THINK about buying my book, THE MANY, for five seconds. Five… four… three… two… one… See, that was easy. Five seconds, every day. You can do it.

Oh FFS. Why not save even more time and let people submit other people's book altogether. "Hi! I'm John Grisham and this is my book, the I wrote!" They can walk around pretending to be famous authors instead of pretending to be unknown authors.

"Co-written"... - I see here you co-wrote this book? - Yeah. - Who's your co-author? - Oh no, it's just me. I wrote it. Except for the words. I didn't choose the words.

This is a great analysis.

I published my first story in 1988, when I was 17 years old. Today, at 55, I've published more than 30 books, with three more coming in the next year or so. In the intervening years, I've spent a lot of time thinking and talking about publishing.

No geese or tiny green cats like Can*Con but Livre And Let Livre _will_ have soot sprites for its 25th edition tonight if you're in Montreal. With guests Véronique Reed and Michelle Franklin.

There's lots of books and movies where aliens show up to wipe us out and the message is that we deserved it in one way or another. Well, I don't know if aliens are keeping tabs but this is as good a reason as any to end a civilization.

Reading this really fucked me up last night. I suppose rape profiteering has been around as long as war profiteering. They’re siblings. That said, there’s something about the unapologetic attitude of betting on the implications of gang rape that bruised the inside of my soul last night.

Hello Author! First let me summarize your own book for you, beginning with "I love how...". Depth. Metaphor. Exploration. Also you should join our group called Super Group Reader Assembly Forum World with 3000 members. I mean... I kinda _hope_ a person didn't write this.

If you sit me between brilliant people, I can sort of look remotely intelligent.

Lotsa laughs with these folks. Will take a while to come down from hosting @mariebilodeau.bsky.social @julieczerneda.bsky.social and @neuvel.net on a character development panel. @canconsffh.bsky.social

I see we're having a debate about whether it's okay to go back to "X," the site owned by a trillionaire fascist who is currently bankrolling the GOP's midterm, throttled Ukraine's war effort, and still winkingly allows vast amounts of CSAM on his service Answer: No, what the fuck is wrong with you

If only there was a common denominator amongst authors being very publicly accused os using AI... Also, Pangram? I mean, I'm all for banning AI slop but using the thing that stole everything to decide is it's been made to look like everything stolen by the everything-stealing thing is... iffy.

I mean, even if you ignore all the bad shit, no one sees your posts anymore. I’d get 200 likes or reply out of 1200 followers on early Twitter, but 7 likes out of 4K people at the end. I was talking to myself, looking at an endless flux of crap. I sure as shit didn’t lose anything by leaving.

I am way too online for my own good, and I had an unreasonably large twitter following, and I really *enjoyed* twitter for a lot of years, and yet leaving there and never looking back was maybe the easiest what-felt-like-a-big-ethical decision I've ever made.

I fucking hate online recipes. "5 min easy chicken stuff. … I once walked the Gulfport beach at night, unaware of my time, or the inescapable loneliness of an indifferent universe. (a novella’s worth of that)… Mix the chicken with the sauce. " No quantities, nothing.

- Hey Siri, how can I flush my reputation down the toilet? - I'm thinking...

This is news to some people, so I present to you: authorsfirst.com Peter F. Hamilton. Conn Iggulden. David W. Ball. R. A. Salvatore. All people who made a good living from writing.

I’m a 10 minute walk from downtown Montreal so there’s a ton of crap and light in the sky but this isn’t too bad for the city…

This is me telescoping tonight. I swear there things at the other end of the magic tube and I will show you tomorrow.

This is me, slightly drunk, very satisfied with the telescoping. We did a ton of outreach, freaked everyone out because Saturn in real life looks like a 4 year old drew it. Good sky, good beer, good people. You can't ask for much more than that,

Email: "I came across The Many and the premise made me stop and read twice. It starts with Carole biting Booker at a donut shop, and somehow that leads to their minds merging into a collective with Shivansh and Evelyn." Me: So glad you told me how my book started, here's my credit card. Take it all

Can you imagine getting one of those horrible lengthy emails summarizing your own book, but it’s real and from a publisher?!?!

NEW: Staff at HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, and Hachette told @adamm0rgan.bsky.social AI is infiltrating their workplaces, from generating cover art and back cover copy, to publicity materials, to rejection emails, as execs tell junior staff to "champion" the tech. www.wired.com/story/book-p...

This is next-level depraved. It’s like they watched every movie ever and said we should be the villains.

Canada is refusing to issue ISBNs to books primarily generated with AI. This illustrates both the urgency of the problem of the growing flood of slop books, and also the toothlessness of addressing it on the honor system without there also being consequences for lying
