Our very own John Shipley, Baron Shipley of Gosforth, former leader of #Newcastle City Council between 2006 and 2010, and member of the House of Lords from 2010, is retiring from the House after 16 years.

Lib Dem Peers@libdempeers.bsky.social

John Shipley spent 34 years on Newcastle City Council and 16 in the Lords. Today, he ended it where he started, opening a debate on local democracy and electoral reform. Thank you, John, and happy retirement.

At a Council meeting earlier this week, councillors backed a motion brought by Liberal Democrat councillor Mark Mitchell (and seconded by Lib Dem councillor Greg Stone) to show that #Newcastle Stands Up to racism. Reform councillors abstained on this motion.

We’re backing our hospitality sector, but not compromising on safety. Last night Council backed our proposal to repeal the Late Night Levy in #Newcastle, an extra tax on a small number of businesses operating in the late night economy. That’s a signal that we’re backing our businesses to thrive.

But crucially, the work the Levy supported won’t stop: working with the police and representatives of the sector, we will continue to fund vital work supporting safety, particularly women and girls, and looking after our streets. We can deliver an improved service, and see funding follow need.

Councillors from across the political divide have backed the new Council Plan of Newcastle City Council's Liberal Democrat-led administration. However, despite extensive cross-party engagement, Reform and Independents chose not to back our ambition for the city, without offering a reason why.

Council Leader Colin Ferguson said "Our vision is unashamedly ambitious. Together, we will become the most successful regional capital. We know we can do it, and we want to work with everyone in the city to deliver it.

“This is an important milestone, it's also the start of a lot of hard work. It’s now time to get behind the builders, not the wreckers, back our ambition, and deliver a city we can all be proud to call home.”

While Reform-led councils in the region have pulled their support for charity Show Racism the Red Card's annual Wear Red Day on 16 October, we're proud to announce that #Newcastle will be lighting up two of its iconic landmarks to mark the day.

Council Leader Colin Ferguson said "Newcastle has long supported Show Racism the Red Card, and I’m proud of our reputation as a city that is warm, friendly and welcoming to everyone. We are famously a city of black and white.

“We will proudly be lighting the Tyne Bridge and our Civic Centre red on October 16. I’ll be wearing a red tie for the day, and I’d invite people across the city to join me – wear red and support the day.”

Today marks 100 days since Colin Ferguson was elected Leader of #Newcastle City Council. Newcastle Liberal Democrats promised you would see a difference in your communities through your front window and we've got started doing exactly that. 100 days in, plenty done, plenty more to do.

This is racism, straight out of the Trump playbook. Reform are trying to turn our great country into a franchise of Trump's America. There are countless British patriots who came here from overseas, many of them refugees we proudly welcomed. That's the kind of country we are.

Council this evening endorsed Leader Colin Ferguson's proposal to convene a public meeting to engage directly with the residents of #Westerhope, listen to their concerns, and answer their questions following the submission of a petition regarding concerns over Stamfordham Road. #Newcastle

Thank you to Stephen and all the team and volunteers who worked so hard to take the Liberal Democrats from 5th to a strong 2nd. And thank you to the near 700 voters who gave us their votes 🙏 🔶

#Newcastle has a very special reason to remember Dolly Parton. ❤️📚 While the world will remember a music icon, here in Newcastle her legacy can also be found in the homes of thousands of children through her Imagination Library. Our thoughts are with Dolly’s family and everyone mourning her loss. ❤️

Council leader Colin Ferguson had backed hospitality venues and called for the end to the Late Night Levy. #Newcastle is just one of two cities outside London that has retained a version of the levy. Now the Lib Dem-led council's licensing committee has agreed that the levy should be revoked.

Congratulations to everyone across #Newcastle and beyond receiving their GCSE results today! You’ve worked incredibly hard and should be proud of how far you’ve come. Whatever your results, there’s so much still ahead.

We're investing in #Newcastle - and parks and green spaces are a priority for the Liberal Democrat Cabinet. Since the election, we have signed off on £1.4m of investment in our parks, reversed park café closures and are addressing bridge closures in Jesmond Dene - and more to come!

Stephen Kelly is a local lad and the strong voice we need for Throckley, Walbottle and Newburn. "This isn't about politics for me. It's about standing up for the place I grew up." Find out more about Stephen and his plans for the ward: www.newcastle-libdems.org.uk/news/article... #Newcastle

It's time to end the #socialcare catastrophe. New analysis by the Liberal Democrats shows that 2695 older people in #Newcastle were denied care in 2024/25, along with 2185 disabled working age adults. Lib Dems want to work across the party divide in order to find a lasting solution to this crisis.

We're delighted to announce Stephen Kelly as the Liberal Democrat candidate for next month's Throckley, Walbottle and Newburn by-election in #Newcastle. Stephen is a local lad who wants to get a fair deal for the area and stop Reform. #LibDems #LiberalDemocrat

Liberal Democrats get things done. We don’t do division. We do potholes and police officers, church roofs and clean rivers. We focus on the local issues that matter to you. Vote Liberal Democrat on 7th May.

In #Newcastle ,we've been pushing on this issue with our own Stop Sewage Polluting the #Ouseburn campaign. In 2025 alone, there were 87 sewage spills into the Ouseburn, adding up to over 279 hours of sewage dumping. Back our campaign: www.newcastle-libdems.org.uk/campaigns/st...

Liberal Democrats@libdems.org.uk

Water firms are dumping sewage with impunity while the Government fails to act. It’s time to end the Wild West water industry with a new regulator, full sewage reporting and a system that serves the public, not profit.

When the Liberal Democrats ran the council, we were twice awarded most Sustainable (greenest) City in the UK. Now Labour has let down the city and with their backing of the incinerator project on Teesside, our recycling rates will continue to decline.

Lib Dems winning in the North East against both Labour and Reform! Help make the change in #Newcastle as well in May by voting for more Liberal Democrat councillors. Because Newcastle deserves better.

Ed Davey@eddavey.libdems.org.uk

Another stunning win, congrats to the team in Redcar! 🔶 As the Labour vote collapses, Liberal Democrats are the ones beating Reform.

#Newcastle deserves better than a failing Labour administration, but wherever Reform run councils, they bring chaos, division, broken promises, and reward themselves above serving residents. Newcastle deserves real change but only the Lib Dems can deliver that. www.lbc.co.uk/article/refo...
