🙌 Last Thursday night saw LCC and Osbornes Law host Innovations in Urban Cycling 🚴‍♀️ 🌍 The event brought together ten speakers from across Europe to talk about just what's enabling cycling to thrive in their cities. 👀 Keep an eye on our socials for details on how to watch each presentation...

If you have people cycling through a pedestrian area where cycling isn’t allowed—particularly tourists and visitors unfamiliar with the network—that means a vital connection is missing. “No cycling” signs and scolding individuals won’t fix the problem. Safe, direct, legible alternatives will.

London Cycling Campaign@londoncycling.bsky.social

🚧 With cycling on Oxford Street now a thing of the past, what should be done? For us the answer is clear; safe, alternative routes! 🤔 With that in mind, our campaigns team set out our vision for the area, and how you can support it: buff.ly/MOwwT7E

Terrible news and an insult to the two people who have already been killed on Marsh Way - this was a funded project which would have prevented further death and injury as well as giving choice to people working in the business area here.

Havering Cyclists@cyclehavering.bsky.social

We're shocked to discover that the long-awaited scheme to make Marsh Way in Rainham safer for cyclists has just been cancelled by Havering Council. More details here: www.haveringcyclists.org/shock-at-scr...

🚲🚶‍♂️ Our CEO Tom Fyans down at the new pedestrianised Oxford Street this morning... 👍 We're all in favour of this move, but where are our safe alternate cycle routes?! 👨‍💻 Send an email to Westminster Council to ask them to start work on new safe cycle routes near Oxford Street: buff.ly/Fhm8R18

That’s what skyscraper wind tunnels do for you 💨😬 but protected cycleways make cycling safe, even if it’s windy!

The Rancid Highwayman@rantyhighwayman.eurosky.social

Just for a second Westfield Avenue felt very Dutch. The howling headwind played quite a role in that observation.

Excellent news: work has begun on Newham’s first fully protected Dutch-style intersection, with free left turns for cycling and straight-across crossings for pedestrians. Let’s hope for a speedy construction!

Newham Council@newhamcouncil.bsky.social

Construction has started on street improvements at the junction of Romford Road at Woodgrange Road. Improvements will include: - New segregated cycle tracks - Safer and easier pedestrian crossing points - A new traffic light system to aid traffic flow

The Council's kerbside survey focuses too much on car parking, and not enough on the many other things our borough needs. A group of residents created a site to help you respond, asking for things that are more valuable than more car parking—safer crossings, street greening, etc. greeningnewham.org

Good news. What has happened to that Greenwich council bid to Govt for funds to renew all four lifts in both Greenwich and Woolwich foot tunnels? We’re keen to know seeing as we proofread documents and suggested adjustments which were consequently used. #GreenwichFootTunnel #WoolwichFootTunnel

KARIN TEARLE@karinlt.bsky.social

A photography work assignment has taken me through the Woolwich foot tunnel. Good to see counter weights and cables ready for installation at the north lift. People who use this tunnel to get to work or Uni of east London will be relieved. #WoolwichFootTunnel #ActiveTravel

Cycle lanes that are invaded by bus stops are dangerous for cycling, and inconvenient for bus drivers & bus users since it creates conflict on accessing the stop. We’re really pleased that this dangerous section of Stratford High Street is currently being upgraded to a safer bus stop bypass.

The Rancid Highwayman@rantyhighwayman.eurosky.social

The September 2024 Google Streetview image is perfect to show the squeeze with passing traffic. We have his half layby cutting into the cycle lane (largely unprotected here anyway) for when you overtake a bus and it has magic paint. It also has a bus every few minutes which is sketchy as hell!

Low traffic neighbourhoods mean less traffic (and they save lives!)

Oxford Clarion@oxfordclarion.bsky.social

A report on 5 years of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods in East Oxford shows that they have reduced road casualties by over 100. The report by the Coalition for Healthy Streets and Active Travel (CoHSAT) also points to the health benefits of reduced air pollution and performance of Cowley Road shops.

It’s super frustrating that Transport for London’s default answer to junctions seems to be “give cyclists a head-start to outrun traffic.” People should not have to outrun traffic at all.

TfL announces new plans for dangerous Monument junction: haveyoursay.tfl.gov.uk/monument-jun... "Safety is our highest priority" says TfL. First looks says: safer, but not truly safe enough & not built with enough capacity for existing cycling levels, let alone years from now. More from us soon...

The driver who killed Harry Webb while doing 53mph in 20mph zone has been sentenced. Fragments of nitrous oxide balloons were found in her car. Harry's father said: ‘Nobody should be killed cycling within a 20mph area in London' and called it a 'senseless road crime’. metro.co.uk/2026/10/10/l...

Our thoughts are with Harry Webb's friends and family as the court case has, after three years, drawn to a conclusion. It's good that the sentence reflects the seriousness of drug driving. But more also needs to be done to reduce the known issues on this road, and prevent future harm from occurring.

🚴‍♂️🚧 With boroughs across London making changes, big and small, to their cycle networks, we thought now would be a good time to set our campaigns team the task of running through the ones you might have missed...

TfL are clearly not serious about helping people choose cheaper, more sustainable modes when it costs TWO AND A HALF TIMES as much to cross the river by bike on the Rotherhithe ferry as it does to drive through Blackwall or #SilvertownTunnel off-peak.

Jack Fifield@jackfifield.uk

I went on the Canary Wharf to Rotherhithe Pier ferry on the weekend. It cost £4.10 and took seven minutes from tap in to tap out (longer when you include waiting for the ferry to arrive). It's mad that this country can't build a bridge from one of its major financial centres to a nearby suburb.

Construction at Water Lane is finally fully complete! The parallel pedestrian and cycle crossing is now on a raised table—so drivers will have to slow down, and will hopefully give way to pedestrians and cyclists (as they should.) A big improvement from the dangerous dogleg that was there before 👏

Disappointing that TfL, when renewing motoring infrastructure, are still doing less than the bare minimum for walking and cycling, the two cheapest modes of transport. See also: adding additional lanes to Bow Roundabout as part of Silvertown Tunnel mitigation, but still no protected signal phase.

CLondoner92@clondoner92.bsky.social

Gallows Corner flyover and roundabout have fully reopened after major refurbishment and strengthening works. The project has renewed the ageing structure, removed restrictions and added new pedestrian and cycle crossings for safer journeys. tfl-newsroom.prgloo.com/news/gallows...

🔍 We were pleased to lead six councillors from across Newham's political spectrum (+1 councillor acting as a marshal) for a Cycling Infrastructure Safari, to see some of the best (and worst) cycling in Newham has to offer. Very exciting news: A trial section of the future Stratford High Street bus priority scheme is now under construction, for the eastbound section of High Street from Bow Roundabout to Marshgate Lane. Aside from a new bus lane, this will introduce a number of improvements for cycling.

For cycling this will include 🚲 Wands to separate the cycle lane from the bus lane—and reduce the kind of interaction you see in the video 🚲 New bus stop bypass at the one place missing one, to keep buses (& bus users) separate from those cycling 🚲 Removal of traffic lights at Marshgate Lane

We're pleased to see this interim scheme and will be responding positively to the traffic order when it is published. Let's hope this momentum continues for a permanent solution for Stratford High Street, including adding protection to the other dangerous junctions at Warton and Carpenters Road.
