Cycle Islington

🚲🚶‍♂️ Our CEO Tom Fyans down at the new pedestrianised Oxford Street this morning... 👍 We're all in favour of this move, but where are our safe alternate cycle routes?! 👨‍💻 Send an email to Westminster Council to ask them to start work on new safe cycle routes near Oxford Street: buff.ly/Fhm8R18

Take LCC's 1-minute action on Oxford Street! Ask Westminster Council to hurry up with high-quality cycle routes parallel to a traffic-free Oxford Street. oxfordstreetishere

We led a glow ride around Oxford. Part of @cyclinguk.bsky.social #MyRideOurRight campaign for safer cycling for women. And @itvnews.bsky.social came along to see. If it's safer for women, it's safer for everyone! Join us and help us to do more www.cyclox.org/index.php/jo...

What are you afraid of? Sharks🦈, lions🦁,bears🐻? Terrifying. Car traffic kills way more people than animals ever could. Even when excluding indirect harm. Watch out for the real predators🚗!

Elephant & castle today... Another child injured by drivers. One of 15000 kids killed & injured by drivers every year. Yet BOM wages war on road safety for kids. Time to free the press from billionaire capture. MediaFreedomAct.org/take-actìon

A self-driving lorry ? Come on Met Police, get it right

Riding a bike still does feel like freedom - especially where infrastructure keeps cars/vans/hgvs/suvs separate. Carry on campaigning, people on bikes, for people who would love to be on bikes @londoncycling.bsky.social @lccwomensnetwork.bsky.social

Since 2016, London’s cycling network has grown fivefold, from 90 to 450 kilometres. The results? 1.5 million daily cycle journeys—a 43% increase since 2019—twice as many bikes as cars on City of London streets during the day, and motor traffic in steady decline—having fallen 25% in the same period.

Oxford's Glow Ride on Thursday was part of @cyclinguk.bsky.social #MyRideOurRight campaign to make sure women's voices are heard on cycling provision and to make cycling safer for all. We were happy to lead this joyful, bright ride around the city centre, with music and sparkles.

Press reporting of incidents involving cars is always inaccurate and just feeds the motornormativity pandemic which pollutes society today. With thanks to @ianwalker.bsky.social for this descriptive and depressing term.

Calling @willnorman.co.uk @london.gov.uk Let's be more like Paris, guys, shall we ?

Ten academic posts on low-traffic neighbourhoods. Plenty of evidence out there. Go and read it. Then use it to create better streets. #LTN

Women deserve to feel safe wherever and whenever they ride. Glow Rides kick off this Thursday, 22 October, calling for safer streets for women. Because safer streets for women mean safer streets for everyone. Find your local glow ride: cyclinguk.org/glow-rides #MyRideOurRight

🛍️ 🚶‍♂️ With the pedestrianisation of Oxford Street taking shape from Sunday, the future of cycling in the area is still far from ideal... 🗣️ LCC's CEO Tom Fyans spoke with ITV London about the need for viable and safe alternative routes (look out for more on that from us 🔜).

Finally an adult talking sense. Motornormativity needs to be challenged. It's ruined lives for far too long. @ianwalker.bsky.social @londoncycling.bsky.social

And what are your plans for the thousands of people on bikes, Mr Mayor ? @london.gov.uk @londoncycling.bsky.social @willnorman.co.uk

‘It’s the best feeling’: how Copenhagen gave cyclists a green wave. “Traffic lights are synchronised so a rush-hour cyclist at 20km/h can catch green lights all the way.” If you want people to choose not to drive, make the non-driving trip better & easier for them. It’s as simple as that, really.

If we want to facilitate local journeys by bicycle the best tool is Low Traffic Neighbourhoods @richmondcycling.bsky.social @alexanderehmann.bsky.social

It will be a long long wait ......sadly put in 'too difficult' bucket for others to solve. Most dangerous junction in Islington. @hackneycycling.org.uk @haringeycyclists.bsky.social @london.gov.uk @londoncycling.bsky.social

Do you recognise this child's helmet ? We found it in Islington and will keep it safe till its owner is found ! @camdencyclists.bsky.social @hackneycycling.org.uk @haringeycyclists.bsky.social

Remember when the Times led the ‘Cities Fit for Cycling’ campaign following the grievous injury to their journalist Mary Bowers. Now they run nonsense headlines like this & don’t care if Islington kids are exposed to the same harms as Mary Bowers as long as drivers aren’t inconvenienced.

🛎️ Meeting at Town Hall tonight at 1830 - all welcome. Some thorny issues on the agenda. Join the discussion ! @camdencyclists.bsky.social @hackneycycling.org.uk @citylcc.bsky.social @haringeycyclists.bsky.social

Ontario’s Premier wanted to remove a well-used bike lane. The community showed up and blocked the trucks. Inspiring! bsky.app/profile/tomf...

Cargo bikes in London are the new normal. Usage is up 126% since 2022 & major logistics companies are looking to expand their fleets - cutting emissions & congestion and saving money. Great visiting London-based manufacturer Minimal to see their operation & try out a new model.

In just over a weeks time, LCC and Osbornes Law will be hosting Innovations in Urban Cycling 🚲️ 🌍️ Speakers from across Europe will be presenting on what actions their cities have taken to boost cycling numbers, and the lessons London can take from them. Find out more: buff.ly/aE4mCoM

Yes it's very low in the list of risks to pedestrians

Simple hack for drivers to avoid fines is to see, read and understand road signs. Not difficult

Would you take a job you can’t get to? Too many young people say no to work every year. Not because they don’t want to work. Tell the Transport Committee what your journey to work looks like by 16 October 📲 forms.cloud.microsoft/Pages/Respon...

Roll this out nationwide ASAP. Run it for three months just giving warnings. Then start fining people and watch the casualty rates drop nationwide. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

1/ My interview @falter.at has fallen into a little trap where men only read the headlines. It’s funny, really, because the article is behind a paywall, but those people still form strong opinions as they scroll, don’t they? Support for my work is welcome :) katja-diehl.de/bluesky

Interesting insights here from @cyclinguk.bsky.social. Good to see that one of their YouGov polls this year revealed that 70% of people support #SchoolStreets - but think that only 49% of others do. Also interesting to see common misperceptions around the popularity of cycle routes and speed limits.

Oh joy! 🙄 King William St southbound contra flow cycle lane to be removed from Saturday 24 Oct due to next stage of footway works starting. Until the final road resurfacing takes place in late Jan 2027, there will be a southbound diversion in place via Cornhill and Gracechurch St..

I wonder what the road safety audits for this project say. Maybe another FOI for me to pop in when the time is right.

Next time you hear someone say "This isn't (insert great cycling city)" Just hit em with "You're right! Better get started so we can catch up!"

One of the key lessons from Dutch cycling history is cities didn't start with protected lanes. They began by making streets safer, calmer and more inviting; with lower speeds, parking restrictions, traffic filters and reduced through-traffic to create an environment in which cycling could flourish.🧵

Well done @camdencouncil.bsky.social - junction coming on a treat; look forward to improvements on the Islington stretch of Clerkenwell road 🕰️⏰🕣

Shadow roads minister Greg Smith says: “You can't do the family shop or a family of five on the back of a bike.” This will be news to anyone with a cargo bike or a trailer.
